Ash is a given. Play something off Nu-clear Sounds, Tim always complains how nobody likes that record. :D Jesus Says is a fun song.
The Seeds - Lucky You or Perfect or Marvellous, Pulp - Disco 2000 or Mis-Shapes, Blur - Universal or There's No Other Way and Oasis - Live Forever or Don't Look Back in Anger or Married With Children (a good way to end a Britpop set) are givens, but lets dig a little deeper.
Supergrass - Caught by the Fuzz or Sun Hits the Sky, Elastica - Connection or Car Song, of course.
Break out some Rialto - Summer's Over, Verve - History or This Is Music, Travis - U16 Girls or A Good Day to Die (Tied to the 90's is a good britpop tune, since thats what it was all about)
Then throw in a Stone Roses' Ten Storey Love Song and you get a bit of a history lesson, along with Motorcycle Emptiness by the Manics.
...... orrrr, you could just hire me (will work for food) and I'll correlate Britpop hours whenever you want me to. :D

You'd love them. Very sweeping, cinematic music. Imagine "Something's Changed" by Pulp with a lot of variations and that's Rialto.
They were in an earlier incarnation known as Kinky Machine - not quite as good as Rialto, but definitely worth tracking down if you're a fan.

I'm pretty sure I bought it (along with most of import purchases) through sirencd.com. They have reasonable prices and only charge $.99 for shipping, no matter how much you buy. I'm not sure how they do it.
I like the Brave Captain stuff quite a bit, actually. Martin and Sice's vocals are very similar, I think, but Sice's is a bit stronger. Do you have the Eggman cd? I love that one, too.

Malh: I've got the Salad and Terry Hall song - I had that compilation, but I'm sure I burned all the good songs off of it (even that Seymour crap ;) ) and sold it at some point or other... thanks for your kind offer, however!
Patas: Eggman is Sice's solo album. I found it for $2 at a Barnes and Noble once. It's very cool, a little more esoteric than your typical Boo Radleys release. In the new compilation, Martin mentions that early on Sice's songs were much better than his but for some reason he ended up being the songwriter. Again, I can hook you up if you need it (I have the lone cd single from it with a couple of b-sides as well...)

Billy Bragg is folk. Housemartins are some weird gospel communist crap. There is no way either can be considered Britpop, although both are awesome.
You're really looking at 1993 with Suede's first album. If you want to be generous, you can go back to Blur's first album, though that was really Madchester-sounding. Or maybe Paul Weller and Style Council.
But like Johnahthahn said, there's a distinct difference between good British pop music and Britpop.

I don't consider them britpop either or I'm certain I would've been the first to mention them. International Language of Screaming or Northern Lites might be considered Britpop, but I don't put SFA in the britpop category. They haven't ever had a top ten single in the UK.

24 Jul 2005, 08:12 PM
Britpop isn't about chart positions, it's about a sound. You said it yourself, there are some SFA albums that fit the Britpop mould.
Nobody would say that "Think Tank" or "13" sounds like Britpop, but that doesn't mean Blur isn't a Britpop group.

Well maybe Fuzzy Logic kinda fits the Britpop mould, but after Radiator, no. The unique thing (and one of the many many reasons I love this band) is that their music defies any easy categorization. But one thing, they do not fit into the pop niche. I'd say they're more neo-progressive rock. Is there such a term?

24 Jul 2005, 08:40 PM
Super Furry Animals, I would not classify as Britpop although I wouldn't argue much against it. I think their early stuff fits the mold and was in the right time period but they quickly moved away into their own sound.
To me, you don't actually have to chart to be Britpop, but you did have to WANT to chart and despite all the early hype, SFA never really fit in. One could say the same about Gomez. You definitely need rock star attitude. Suede, Oasis, and Pulp sound nothing alike so it has to be more than just a sound.
I think you have to be careful with Blur as they have so many sounds. They were around before, during, and after Britpop. Leisure fits pretty well into the Madchester mold. Thinktank and 13 are post-Britpop. I'd say they have definitely have Britpop albums but they transcend the genre. Lush is another one; they went from solid shoegazers to Britpop.

There's plenty more.
Marion were great hope. They developed so much between 1st and 2nd album. Their terrific second Johnny Marr produced "The Program" LP declined due to few factors and the band split the following year. Does anyone remember them?
60ft Dolls (allegedly mates with Marion) released two albums, each has some great moments. They were more like a post late seventies punk band but at times they showed their mellow side, especially on the second LP. Richard Parfitt is a gorgeous guitar player, he released overlooked solo album few years ago.
There's still a lot to discuss

I saw them on this tour in a tiny club here in Houston. However after fits and starts of evolution, I thought the Warnings/Promises album was their zenith.
"Love Steals Us from Loneliness" is such a superior song. I was just listening to it the other day. This album never goes too long without some carplay.
