just thinking off the top of my head...

band retrospectives...maybe like an hour of one or two bands where you play 2 or 3(or more) songs from a few different albums

i.e. wilco - you could play some uncle tupelo, and then stuff from a.m., yhf, ghost.

i am always fascinated by a band's progression from album to album.

New Wave Wednesday: Self-explanatory

Scratch & Burn: Hip-Hop and DJs

Rep Your Hood: Pick a city/state and play only artists from that locale

(Insert Foreign Land Here) Invasion: Pick a country and play only artists from that nation

Soundtrax: Songs from movie/tv soundtracks

That's all for now, more to come

you could bring back the listener's choice six-pack. that allows for an infinite number of short sets of small/limited themes. people could post ideas in a thread, and djs could pick their faves from that list.

a show dedicated to remixes? (i know shiv does some of this on xtrabeats)

i second the new-wave idea.

I was just going to suggest this. I think I still have one I thought up about 10 years ago, which would still work. Now if I could just remember all 6 songs that were going to be in the six-pack.

I second that!

Maybe an early 90's show. Between 1990-1995. I think that would make for an excellent grunge show! :D

Play the last listeners choice chart before the terrestrial sign off.

I loved the listener's choice 6 pack! I sent one in years ago and it actually got picked. I'm such a geek...I still have it on audio cassette. It was fun to create themes and find songs that link. Sigh...geek.

Jae was the dj and I didn't even care about the prizes. I was thrilled to hear her play my six selections on the radio. (Although the prizes were sweet. I can't remember all of the cd's I won, but I think G. Love and Todd Snider were two of them.)

I also got to program an hour of Back to the Future. Again, that was cool, but they bumped my Adam Ant song due to time restrictions. :(

I love hearing blocks of music picked by the listeners. Remember that anniversary weekend when woxy played nothing but blocks of three songs we emailed in? That weekend was nothing but brilliant music.

Bring back the 6 pack and the program-your-own Back to the Future...I think the 6 pack was nightly, but the BTTF program blocks were once a month.

It would probably be similar to this, but a series of songs about a particular city...a New York or Chicago list would be awesome. There are some songs that can just put you there.

How about something similar to the "song titles" thread, where the next song shares a word with the previous one, like "Blue Monday" followed by "I Don't Like Mondays", etc... and so on.

Or if you're going to do a theme on a specific band or performer, get into side projects, former bands, etc...Like with The Cure you could play some of the Banshees' stuff which Robert played guitar on, and "The Glove".

-all Canadian (is there enough?)
-songs that were banned from mainstream radio (again, enough material?)

All Rolling Stones covers, or Dylan, or...
How many diffrent versions of Sweet Jane are oot there?
Songs about beer.
The history of ska.
Ska bands who don't have the word ska in their name (granted, a short set...)
All live versions.
All live versions by those now dead.
Bands with twins in them.
Acoustic versions. Not neccessarily by the original artists.
Songs with schwahs in the title.

i love buzzstein's incest hour, and tss's cure all hour, and i would love an all canadian hour. i'd be remiss of my own upbringing if i didn't request an all 80s goth hour too. (c'mon folks, some of you used to be goths. re-live it.)

i'm loving the idea of bringing back the six-pack, though an hour is more like 16songs or so.

it would be cool to hear shows like skinny puppy vs ministry, or depeche mode vs eurasure, or echo and the bunnymen vs the psych furs.

also, i would like themes like:
- politics (already mentioned, but worth repeating)
- travelling
- songs from excellent soundtracks
- first times
- anthems

it will be cool when you implement some of the ideas generated in this thread. there are so many great ideas flowing here.

Or simply play a full hour of music from a certain country: Scottish, British, Welsh, Canadian, Spainish, Swedish, Iceland, so on.

Done cutting lawn.
Pick today's date. Pick an hour. Pick a year. Play what 97x played that hour, that day that year. Throw in some commercials. What was the price of milk at the Oxford K.R.Ogre that year???
Maybe a few rounds of "What's Behind The Green Door"....
Rebroadcast old Miami basketball games.
That's when I knew it was still too hot to mow...

Wow, good idea but can you spell I-R-E-L-A-N-D? :D

U2, Ash, the Cranberries, the Thrills, Damien Rice, Gavin Friday, Thin Lizzy, Sinead, Stiff Little Fingers, the Pogues, Beer For Breakfast, Nearly Dead Jim, etc.

Bloody brilliant. I dont know how much of that they have at their disposal, though. And I doubt you can rebroadcast games without the expressed written consent of Major League Base... oh right. Well you know what I mean.

I love the idea of hearing old voices and commercials, though. That would be Vintagely fun.

Lots of good idears, people. I'd really like to see the six-packs come back. Some themes ideas for six-packs or hour-long shows:

Influences: play a VU song, then an Eno song that was clearly influenced by VU, then something clearly influenced by Eno, etc.
all bands whose names were derived from the lyrics of other modern rockers; like, play the Stranglers' "Toiler on the Sea" (in which they repeatedly sing "a flock of seagulls"). then play A Flock of Seagulls.
pick a seminal group that ended up spawning many other groups and play something from each incarnation; like earliest Adam & the Ants, followed by Bow Wow Wow, followed by Monochrome Set, followed by Adam Ant, followed by Wide Boy Awake, etc.
Taking the cue from 24 Hour Party People, play Sex Pistols, then something by each band formed by people who saw the Pistols at that small Manchester gig.
modern rock songs that borrowed a musical motif from pop songs, like "Disco 2000" and "Gloria", "Oliver's Army" and "Dancing Queen"
I love tracing influences along these lines; I think it's eminently interesting.

There are a lot of great ideas already,
I want to hear some of the old goth stuff too.

BUT more than anything I would love to hear all the late 80's, early 90's electronic/industrial stuff. Skinny Puppy, Ministry, Nitzer Ebb, Meat Beat, KMFDM, Front 242, Front Line Assembly, Revolting Cocks, Thrill Kill Kult, 1000 homo dj's, Coil, Pigface, Clock DVA, Cyberaktif, etc etc etc. There are tons of songs you could play that haven't been played in a very long time. Like when you had the 97x nights at clubs or the boat rides and such way back then.

if there is going to be anything like comparing two bands or bands related to eachother or something along those lines, it would be nice if the hour had a little bit of commentary in between the songs so that if someone doesn't know about that band or the connection to another band or whatnot, then they learn bits and pieces of modern music history.

Some great ideas here, folks. I'm going to break some of them down into their own topic and you can post your suggestions from there. Keep in mind it takes an average of 15 songs to produce an hour long show.

Okay, I'll start with 10 and see how long it takes us to fill 'em up. Remember, you can still make individual requests for Vintage By Design vintageATwoxy.com

genre question:

how are we defining bands like erasure, new order, etc? they're sort of new wave, but sort of the precursers to a lot of synth industrial/goth stuff. or can we put them in both? ;)
