View Full Version : The Cleveland Browns Thread

I had to start one...

this should be a heckuva year. not because we'll be winning a lot of games, but like every 2-3 years in cleveland there is a new regime. and new drama at practically every position.

go browns.

I would be much more optimistic for your Browns if KWII wouldn't have tried his crazy stunts...yet I like Braylon Edwards A LOT, yet I still don't know how this will fair. It will be interesting though how Romeo will deal with his new crew and all. I just think it would be a lot better with KWII in the mix.

yeah - it would nice to have the highest paid tight end in NFL history to be on the field...opponents' defenses would be changed instantly.

but i'm really excited for edwards. we've got a pretty good receiver core with antonio bryant, andre davis, and northcutt. we'll just see if dilfer can get it to them.

I call bull. The Brownies may be lucky if they win 7 games this year, but the Bengals are certainly NOT supposed to win this game any more than the Browns are supposed to win it. It's a new regime, but the team showed between the first exhibition game and the second that they do have a strong learning curve. We looked much better in the second game with improved run defense and another solid performance from Frye. There's hope in C-town, and that's always a good thing.

Woo! Go Browns!

maybe if you'd offered them some "cheat cakes" instead of the world famous "grumble cakes". Science again!! I said science again!!

I really hope the Browns do decently this year, if just so Romeo starts out on a good foot. He's a really good coach, and he deserves this job. It's just a shame his first head coaching job is with a team that is rebuilding to the extreme.

The Browns/Bengals game on Sept. 11 is going to come down to how hungry the Bengals are, and how much to heart they've taken Lewis' "quick-start" principle. I wouldn't call this a Bengals win until the final horn sounds, and the Bengals have more points than the Browns.

listen, i KNOW the browns are going to suck this year. i know this.

And the browns have NEVER been to the super bowl. they won the championship in 1964 - the year before joinin the NFL.

say what you will, and poll who ever is on the street, but anyone who is a true NFL fan knows that the Browns' uniform is classic and reputable. and the city rocks.

so let's just see what happens on sunday. i hope the browns only win 2 games this year - both against the bungles - so that we can get another high draft pick, and this time one that was scouted by crennel's boys.

Yeah, I don't know who in their right mind would prefer these awful new uniforms like the Panthers and Broncos over the Browns old digs.

Dilfer named player of the week
The NFL recognized Browns quarterback Trent Dilfer's performance last Sunday by naming him the AFC Offensive Player of the Week.

Dilfer completed 21-of-32 passes for 336 yards with three touchdowns and a 131.8 quarterback rating. On the season, he's second in the league in total passing yards and ranks fifth in passer rating.

He's only the second Browns player to win AFC Offensive Player of the Week honors since the team's return in 1999. Tim Couch also did it in 2002.

He's out for a bit--sounds kind of funky. How do you let cuts and scrapes on your arm get that bad? Hope he recovers soon.

Infection Hospitalizes Browns' Edwards
Sunday, October 9, 2005 7:02 PM EDT
The Associated Press
By TOM WITHERS

CLEVELAND (AP) — Browns rookie wide receiver Braylon Edwards remained hospitalized Sunday following surgery to treat an infection in his right arm.

Edwards practiced all week and was not listed on the team's injury report for Cleveland's game against the Chicago Bears. Browns coach Romeo Crennel said the first-round draft pick took part in the team's walkthrough Saturday.

Afterward, Edwards, who had cuts and scrapes on his arm, noticed that it was swollen and showed team doctors, who admitted him to the Cleveland Clinic.

Edwards underwent a surgical procedure Saturday night to have the infection cleaned out, Crennel said.

It was not immediately known if Edwards has a staph infection. Crennel said doctors don't yet know how long Edwards might be sidelined.

"They didn't say," Crennel said following Cleveland's 20-10 win Sunday. "We may know more tomorrow. It might depend on when they run tests and cultures and what they might find."

Edwards didn't mention any problems with his arm to reporters last week. He wore a protective sleeve over his elbow during practice.

Edwards, who has yet to crack Cleveland's starting lineup, has nine catches for 166 yards. He scored on an 80-yard TD reception in the Browns' Sept. 18 win at Green Bay, the type of game-breaking play the club envisioned him making when they selected Edwards with the third overall pick in April's draft.

The former Michigan star has been listed as the club's No. 3 receiver, but Crennel said last week that Edwards has been making steady progress. Edwards missed two weeks of training camp before signing a five-year, $40 million contract in August.

The Browns (1-2), who had a bye last week, have had a history of injuries to top draft picks.

Quarterback Tim Couch missed the final nine games of his second season with a fractured thumb and was plagued by elbow trouble during his time in Cleveland. Defensive end Courtney Browns missed 33 games over five seasons with assorted injuries before being released in March.

Tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. broke his ankle in Week 2 a year ago, and is sidelined this season with injuries sustained in an offseason motorcycle injury.

With Edwards out, Frisman Jackson played more on Sunday but did not make a catch. Jackson dropped a key third down pass in the third quarter on a slant pattern as the Browns were tying to rally.

Bah! (Sorry, but Clevelanders are genetically programmed to hate the Ravens at least until Art Modell dies.)

On the plus side--OSU and the Browns won in the same weekend. All is well with the world.

I wonder sometimes that if the Browns would not have moved to Baltimore if they would have won the Super Bowl in Cleveland a few years back, do you think that would have happened? And can you actually picture Ray Lewis in a Browns uni?

I'm a huge Browns fan, but I have to announce that the Browns suck this year. It makes me sad. I know 2 games is early to throw in the towel, but they didn't have much going for them anyway. I'm still rooting, but I'm hoping for maybe 4 wins this year.

So far, they have looked awful.

Crennell needs to stop being so damned conservative on offense. it makes opposing defenses have to study that much less. handoff, handoff, short pass. every series he does that.

yeah, having been at the game on sunday, it was amazing how conservative their offense is. they don't throw long and like to run, so it's going to be a long season when defenses are stuffing 8 in the box.

All kidding aside, they have some parts to work with. I like Edwards and Winslow, but I'm not sold on Frye. Romeo should get them to work, if he is given the time.

BEREA, Ohio - Maurice Carthon resigned as Cleveland's offensive coordinator Tuesday, two days after the Browns' NFL-worst offense scored seven points in a loss to Denver.

Carthon, whose head-scratching play calls and personnel moves angered fans and puzzled players, was in his second year running the offense.

Despite having two weeks to devise a game plan, the Browns (1-5) picked up only 165 total yards in losing 17-7 to the Broncos and are ranked at or near the bottom of the league in most offensive categories.

Browns coach Romeo Crennel said Carthon came into his office Monday and offered his resignation. The pair talked and after their discussion, Crennel decided to accept it from his close friend for the "good of the organization and the fans."

"I'm not making anybody a scapegoat," Crennel said. "I'm doing what is best for the Cleveland Browns."

Crennel insists he didn't receive any pressure from Browns owner Randy Lerner or general manager Phil Savage to replace Carthon.

Jeff Davidson, the club's offensive line coach the past two seasons, will replace Carthon as the club's offensive coordinator. Davidson was given the title of assistant head coach after last season when he nearly took a job with the New York Jets.

Crennel said Davidson, an assistant for eight seasons in New England, got some experience running an offense during training camp and in the 2002 preseason when Patriots coordinator Charlie Weis had gastric bypass surgery.

Crennel doesn't expect any major changes to Cleveland's offense under Davidson, a former Ohio State tackle who played four seasons in the NFL before a shoulder injury cut his career short.

"He'll pick the things he likes and dress them up," Crennel said.

On Sunday, Cleveland's offense didn't move the ball inside Denver's 40-yard line until the final play of the third quarter and scored its only touchdown following an 18-yard drive set up by Browns linebacker Andra Davis' interception.

Last season under Carthon, the Browns scored a league-low 232 points.

Following Cleveland's bye week, Crennel decided to stick with Carthon, a former New York Giants fullback and running backs coach who never handled play calling before joining Crennel's staff.

Both the Baltimore Ravens and Arizona Cardinals dismissed their offensive coordinators last week, and Crennel decided he would take on a more active role with the offense to help Carthon.

But nothing worked against the Broncos, who sacked Charlie Frye five times and held the Browns to season lows in points, first downs, third-down efficiency, total yards and rushing yards.

There had been grumbling inside and outside the Browns' locker room for weeks about the offensive woes.

Tight end Kellen Winslow was openly critical of Carthon's schemes following a Week 2 loss to Cincinnati. Winslow, who wasn't on the field for several third-down situations in that game, complained that "some of the coaches might be holding us back a little bit. We have nothing to lose. Let's go!"

Winslow later said his comments were a mistake, but started to get the ball more after making them. Even Monday, Winslow cited Cleveland's poor play calling as one of the team's many problems.

Carthon, too, made some questionable calls and personnel decisions.

In a loss at Carolina, the Browns tried a halfback option on third-and-short, but rookie fullback Lawrence Vickers' pass intended for Winslow was incomplete in the end zone. Crennel spent two weeks defending the call, which had frustrated Browns fans screaming for Carthon's job.

In Cleveland's opener against New Orleans, Carthon gave the ball to Vickers on two crucial third-and-1 plays and both times the sixth-round pick was stopped short of a first down on sweeps.

Last year, Carthon clashed with quarterback Trent Dilfer over the Browns' offensive schemes and game plans. Dilfer was then traded in March, the first sign of Crennel's commitment to Carthon.

About Freakin' Time!

It never seemed that Carthon understood what kind of talent the Browns had this year. The best player on offense is a tight end(Kellen Winslow). The next best player is a wide-out(Braylon Edwards). You have 1000yrd rusher in the backfield. So on third down you give the ball to...A FULLBACK?!!. I don't know whether to scream or vomit. Good riddance. It's too bad the season is done, but maybe if the draft some offensive linemen and find a real co-ordinator, preferably somebody from outside the current staff, then next year will be better.

Someone wrote an article a while back (or maybe it was one of the NE Ohio newspapers' blogs) saying that Carthon was a fullback for a few years in the NFL (Giants, maybe?) and he was always VERY frustrated that they didn't let him contribute more to the offense. The author basically said that Carthon was trying to live vicarously through Vickers & Smith and that was probably the reason that he was trying to give so many touches to the fullbacks.

Terrell Smith is even on record saying that he doesn't really want the ball -- he just wants to go out there and knock some heads around and block.

I'm somewhat excited about the guy they promoted -- he was almost hired by the jets this offseason to be their new Offensive Coordinator...

If you want to work out your career frustrations, coach in college where no one will notice. Don't call that goofy crap when the Browns are playing, especially when the margin for error for this team is so small.

I read an interview with a coulple of linemen who said Carthon would call plays when everybody saw he had the wrong protection. What?!!!

Somebody was so over their head.

The only thing we have going for us is that the new OC was the Jets' first choice for their job, so maybe he at least has some sense.

Gisrick, if the Jets don't win then you either have suffered a QB injury, or you don't deserve to go to the playoffs, 'cause right now, we suck.

Good point (GISRICK BTW)...They played like shitters so they didn't deserve to win...I think that play needs to be reviewed though...He would have come down inbounds...Here in NY, the Jets are not talking about that play...How they got potentially robbed...They are talking about how bad they played.

I think it wasn't all on your guys. The Browns did make some plays, and our coaches should be familliar with your defense, since we play the same one. Also we had the advantage of suprise, since until last week, we weren't calling effective offensive plays.

Shut up, you know it was funny! I like the Browns, except when they play my team. Then I expect them to lose. In all honesty I think Cleveland fans were dealt a raw deal when Art Modell moved the team to Baltimore. Cleveland would still hold the record for the most consecutive sellouts for an NFL franchise, but now that title belongs to the Denver Broncos.

Anyway, get over it, it was funny and you know it!!!

I just want this season to end. Stop the Insanity! Soon we can move on the draft.

Here is my list of draft priorities:

1. Off. Left Tackle. Too many injuries to quarterbacks mean you aren't blocking, and this is the place to fix that problem.

2. Off. Guard. No running game from lack of blocking. How does Rueben Droghnes go from 1200yds to this in one year, unless the O-line sucks?

3. Def. Tackle. Can't stop the run.

4. Running Back. In case Droghnes is done after all.

5. Cornerback. Ours get hurt too much. Seriously, how does a human being tear BOTH patellar tendons on one play? BOTH?!!

6. Witch Doctor. This team is cursed.

Many people want the Browns to draft Troy Smith. I would only take him if he's available later than the first round, and only after the O-Line is fixed. Otherwise he'll be too expensive and will get hurt like every other QB we've had.

I also vote Romeo stays. He hasn't done a great job, but unless you can get Bill Parcells, or some one of that ilk, changing for change sake is just going to make the recovery take longer, as a new coach is going to turn over an already thin roster.
