With the MLB all-star break right around the corner, it's time to start thinking football. Namely, those Cincy Bengals!!
I must say, they are looking the best they've ever looked at this point in a year. No major injuries, no contract distractions, great team chemistry. If only they weren't in a division where they were going to be beating up/getting beat up by the Ravens and Steelers (sorry Browns fans, you've got a couple of years yet). If they come out of the gates quickly, I feel they have a legitimate chance at a playoff spot, if not the AFC North title. Granted this all depends on how much the defense has truly improved.

In Marvin We Trust!

"This is The Year".......(and this year we mean it!)

I don't know about winning the division, but they gotta get a wild card this year. Should be a very exciting offense.

They start selling the 2 game packages on July 9th. Tells you that season tix interest has cooled off. With the signing of krenzel you'd think they'd sell out for the next 50 years

I don't know if they're good enough to win their division just yet but they've got a great shot at the Wild Card. I think they can beat out the Ravens but man...the AFC is so strong in general and the Steelers are just such a solid team. Who knows? Maybe Pittsburgh will be plagued with injury or have a bad season. Assuming Lewis puts together a powerful defense then there's no reason why they shouldn't be a contender this year. The offense is already stacked...let's keep our fingers crossed!

See you all at the games!

Yes, its about that time for delusion. I havn't been this excited for football since I though Blake, Pickens, and Darney Scott were going to be unstoppable. I also at one time thought Harold Green was going to have a great career.

Hopefully it's not hype. Although if Brown gets involved again it's all over. I like Lewis, but I'm not sold on his drafting prowress yet. I think they need a quality GM. As far as playoffs go, they are in probably the toughest division now, so they may need to win the divsion because no wild cards may make it out of there.

Palmer is the future of the franchise. He's the best young quarterback in the league.

I think the team will be really, really good. They should be a 10 or 11 win team. I just don't know if that's enough in the AFC, especially our division. Pitt is almost as good as last year, and Balt is much improved. I don't know if we can hurdle those 2, plus the strong West and an improved East.

The offense will put up yards and score points in bunches. the defense will be fast, and much better than last years team. I just hope it's enough.

Carson Palmer is The Truth.

I'm done.......for now.

Wow, actual positive reviews from a well-respected football analyst. Instead of it being "they can't compete" or "in a few more years", this was a bit of "they can" and "they have the tools". Sort of brought a tear to the eye.

Vick? Ha, don't make me laugh. Everyone has been waiting for him to develop for too long. He's dangerous, but I'd take Palmer in a heartbeat.

As with Big Ben, I'm a Miami Alumni myself. Have always loved Harper, Szczerbiak, and now Roethlisberger. Sorry though, Palmers better, at least for now. Hopefully Ben will be amazing though!

29 Jun 2005, 06:00 PM
The Bengals are definitely the best offensive team in the division. The fate of this season will rest upon whether or not the defense can step up and consistently stop the run. I'm a fan (I attended 5 games last year), but I'm also a realist. I think their linebacking corps is awesome now, but I am still concerned about DT. They don't need Warren Sapp in his prime type of players, but they do need some guys that will eat up blocks that will allow the LB's to make plays. I'm still not sure they have that. That is the weakness of this team.

A few thoughts this summer
By Pat Kirwan
NFL.com Senior Analyst

(June 25, 2005) -- I went to Cincinnati last week and spent a day with the team, coaches, front-office people and lots of fans.

Two weeks ago, the team held a practice in shorts and opened it up for the fans to watch. About 12,000 people showed up! Bengals fever is back in a big way. And it is amazing to me that consecutive 8-8 seasons in one city could be a sign of disaster and doom, yet in Bengals land it is a sign of hope and optimism. After 24 hours in the Bengals community, there was no doubt that I started to get the bug that the time has come for black and orange to step up.

When I asked a few of the players about trying to identify the moment the Bengals turnaround started, I got two consistent answers. The younger veterans who hadn't been through the worst of times sighted the fourth quarter of the game against the Ravens late last year at Baltimore when the team stormed back with 24 points to defeat the mighty Ravens and their defense. The older players said it happened when Marvin Lewis came in as head coach and immediately started changing the way things were done with running the team. The media I spoke with felt it was both ... and a lot more. They sighted good drafts, especially this last one when the team selected David Pollack, Odell Thurman and Chris Henry in the first three rounds.

There is risk attached to Thurman and Henry because of some issues in their past, but the people that cover the team feel Lewis' strongest suit may be the ability to mentor young players and keep them headed in the right direction. As one assistant coach said to me, "We may have drafted three first-round players when it was all said and done."

As I pulled out of Cincinnati, it occurred to me that this team may not be ready for a Super Bowl run, but the quiet optimism of the head coach and the momentum of the late-season charge in 2004 have the team on the right track. The things Lewis is doing to bring this team closer together -- like a visit to a NASCAR track with the players for the experience of a race -- made me feel something very special is brewing in Bengals country.

Watch out AFC North, here they come ready or not!

He can have my seat. Teams that start TWO rookies at LB (and one being out of position), don't go real far. Plus, we still lack the depth that most teams have. One starter getting hurt really hurts us more than a lot of other teams.

Who dey? Oh, seven teams.

at CLE - Win 24-13
MIN - Loss 27-20
at CHI - Win 21-10
HOU - Win 35-17
at JAX - Loss 35-28
at TEN - Loss 24-20
PIT - Win 17-14
GB - Win 24-22
at BAL - Loss 14-10
IND - Loss 33-28
BAL - Win 17-3
at PIT - Loss 28-21
CLE - Win 28-14
at DET - Loss 35-31
BUF - Win 21-20
at KC - Win 35-25

They could easily lose to KC and DET, and easily sweep TEN and BAL. Still, the song remains the same : 9-7 and a playoff birth!

I personally would take Palmer over Vick to lead the Bengals.

You are so lucky The_Deacon, a few years back, from what I gather, unless it changed this season, Insight Communications, the cable provider here in the NKY, did away with essential sports packages (MLB Extra Innings, NFL Sunday Ticket, etc.) I was not the happiest camper in teh world as it was supposed to be part of my bday present every year from my parents to receive new subscriptions on some of these. Can I say now that up until now I had just glanced over Artpunchehorse's screen name and never really read it per say and made sense of it. I cant believe with back to back 8-8 seasons anybody would think this team could go 7-9...or that Pittsburgh is going to be as good as they were last year. No way in hell they go 15-1 again. The Bengals will beat them at least once...theyll beat every team in the division at least once.

It's not goofy. That is the wrong word Handy. IT'S BULLSHIT!!! In this day in age, it is all about slime ball agents trying to get the most money for thier clients and themselves. Agents could give a rat's ass about the team concept of sports. That is why, as far as I am concerned, all agents can go blow any farm animal of thier choice.

I would love to see more teams take the approach that Washington did with (I think it was) Sean Gilbert years ago and let him sit out the entire season. If Philly does anything with TO's contract, they will instantly become one of my most hated franchises.
Sometimes I dont mind the holdout. Javon Walker has been making NFL minimum wage for what 2-3 years now? He's scheduled to make about $500,000 this year after establishing himself as a top 10 WR in the league last year. If he blows out a knee this season under his current contract, he's screwed. Granted he has already made a lot of money, but some football players have little to no marketable skills off the football field. What do you do for the next 40 years when you cant do the job youve been training to do your whole life?
Not that I feel too sorry for him, but I understand when players in his situation hold out.
Shaun Alexander, even though I hear he is the worlds nicest guy, can go to hell. Ya know what Shaun, welcome to the business of football. Seattle doesnt want to sign you longterm but will give you a ridiculous amount of money for one year. Obviously nobody else wants you longterm, otherwise somebody wouldve traded for your ass. Theres no doubt you could probably play another 5-6 years. Go out and prove you've still got game this season and I garuntee someone will sign you next year for a pretty hefty sum.

Aw, I wouldn't say the optimism is out of control. The optimism we're showing is no different that what's being shown here in DC, and in cities like Pittsburgh, Boston, Philly, etc. I think it's simply because the Bengals are legitimate contenders for the first time in a long time that the optimism seems overblown. We haven't had a reason (except for hope) to be near this optimistic in years. This team has the talent, coaching, and attitude to back up the optimism.

The players are putting pressure on themselves to win this year. They all quote that they "know" they can win this year, and they expect to. Unlike in years past, when it was "do better than last year", this year is the "we should and will win" mentality. There just seems to be a different vibe on this year's team, and frankly, I'm happy for the city and the players that stuck around. Marvin has built a strong, confident team that won't be pressured by a newspaper article. The Bungals are dead.

GEORGETOWN, Ky. - More sights and sounds from training camp. Memo to S.I’s Peter King on sleeper fantasy picks:

Rookie wide receiver Chris Henry continued to impress Saturday as Marvin Lewis jacked up things in the first day of pads with the famed drill known as the “Oklahoma,” “Nutcracker,” or whatever your high school coach called the one-on-ones you were asked to beat the tar out of the guy across from you. Safety Madieu Williams still made the tackle after Henry knocked his helmet off on the initial block, which tells you something about both!!

There is no doubt in my mind that the Bengals will AVERAGE at least 30 points a game this year!! :D

i read a pretty good training camp article on the SI website, and they were raving about carson & predicting a break out year for him. i totally agree & think his really strong 2nd half of the season last year was an under-reported story.

it's also pretty cool to see chad johnson popping up more and more in the national media & talk shows. he's now recognized as being among the elite, which is precisely where he belongs.

this speedster rookie receiver from (i think) tennessee is also getting good reviews. if you add him to the mix as a 3rd down receiver along with chad and tj, you've got a helluva receiving corps.

Bengals rookie center Eric Ghiaciuc hit the field Saturday night just as the team started to warm up for practice and shortly after the club announced he had signed his four-year deal. Roethlisberger-doesnt have the arm, athleticism, or overall talent level of Palmer. He is talented and will be very good, but he doesnt quite have Palmers skills. that why Palmer was the #1 pick and Roethlisberger was #12, or whatever.
Palmer was in his second season last year. Roethlisberger was in his rookie season.
The Steelers lost a couple starters, including 2 Olineman. The Bengals return every offensive starter. The Steelers have 2 talented but aging running backs. The Bengals have 2 young explosive and talented running backs. Hines Ward is the Steelers top WR and he's holding out of camp. Chad Johnson is better than ward, and the Bengals 2-5 WRs are all as good or better than Randle El or Cedric Wilson.

I still trust Jim Anderson and Marvin Lewis' judgement. Marvin said they thought Perry was the best RB available and their #1 guy. Sure, you say, organizations always say they had the guy they drafted rated as #1 at his position.
The difference here? The Bengals had the oppurtunity to draft any of the 3 RBs (Jackson, Jones, Perry) and traded down and went with Perry. If they thought Jackson was the best option, they wouldve taken him, period point blank.
Give the guy half a chance. He hardly played at all last year. Trust in Marvin.

I very much trust in Marvin and Jim. They are only human. They got this one wrong, which is not going to hurt the Bengals that much. Rudi will be great, but more importantly, I think Kenny Watson will be the suprise break out player of the year. I think Kenny will put up some serious recieving yards this year.

they drafted Perry because they already had Rudi, and Perry had the best hands of any of the RBs available. With Carson, they were looking to give him more weapons and they thought Perry could be a Thurman Thomas/Marshall Faulk type.

Of course I know all this, but just saying its not unusual for some young QBs to take a step back. Not saying its gonna happen, but being a Bengals fan, I'm always ready for the disappointment.

My friends and I have always joked that The Bengals franchise is really just a huge social experiment designed to see how much people can endure. There are hidden cameras in all the loyal bars and living rooms where people get excited every year. We'll all be on reality TV soon, just watch. The producers are getting a big kick out of these threads. It's all fixed.

GEORGETOWN, Ky. _ After getting smoked on the goal line in the season’s first live drill Wednesday night, the Bengals defense came up with a new goal and realized it just 48 hours later in a decisive 40-22 victory over the offense in Friday night’s annual intrasquad scrimmage!! ;)

This is a good thing!!!! Why? Two key players where not on the field.

I attended the mock game today at Georgetown. This makes the 4th consecutive year I have gone to training camp to see the scrimmage or mock game. Carson looks really poised and sharp. Chad as usual, is awesome. The o-line even without Willie today looked was great. The starting defense showed some signs that it may get some regular pressure. The starting secondary looks really good. I definitely think Odell Thurman is the real deal. Chris Henry really impressed me with his size and speed and Tab Perry also looked good. I'm hoping that Quincy Wilson can find a spot on this team because he has a lot of speed and power. The down side was that Matt Schoebel dropped a couple of passes that were right there in his hands and it still looks like the offense is struggling to score in the red zone. It was hard today to get a real judgement on the running game either on offense or defense because they weren't in full pads and it was only touch. I will say that overall, the entire team looked much sharper than they did for the mock game last year. I just hope it translates into that fast start for the season that everyone is looking for.

I think Dugans had nagging injuries and Marvin cut him. He was our best special teams tackler a couple years ago.

I always hoped we could have gotten Lavernus Coles, so we could have had three FSU WR's from the same FSU team (although Coles was the ring leader of the brilliant 90% Dilliards special discount. He basically cost P-Dub a Heisman)

GEORGETOWN, Ky. - Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis replaced first-round pick David Pollack in the starting lineup at strong-side linebacker with Landon Johnson on Monday, the first major fallout of a holdout that reached its 11th day. Marcus Wilkins is the backup and Pollack is on the third team with rookie free agent Cedric Sullivan.

“Right now, he would have a difficult time coming in and being a starting player on our team just because he’s missed too much,” Lewis said. “I can’t subject the other 52 players and our coaches and everybody else to that.”

I love the way Marvin does his thing!! I have no tolarance for holdouts. I have lost most of my respect for Pollack. The bus to a championship took off Aug. 29th and David was not on it. He is not even trying to catch a ride to catch up with it. As far as I am concerned, he can just take it back to the house for the whole fucking year.

Chris Perry, a James Brooksish-type running back whose downfield catching skills the Bengals hope can be used to exploit Carson Palmer’s long ball, finally gets on the field Friday in the fittest shape of his pro career to join an offense suddenly heralded and feared.

I have never been a Fan of the drafting of Chris Perry. And the lack of time of the field since then has not helped either. Just got done watching the tape delayed game vs. the Pats. I listened to it at work before that. This is what I got.

Carson needs not listen to Chad on the field. Carson needs to check down when he is supposed to. Chad will talk him into decisions that he should not make. I think Carson will figure that out very soon.

Chris Perry looked healthy finally!! He had some nice catches out of the back field. Chris ended up with 41 yards rushing. Not bad for a preseason game. As a 3rd down back though, Perry needs to learn and master blocking assingments. He missed a big one that got Kitna rocked!!!!! That will take time.....hopefully not to much!!

Finally, the reason the Bengals did not win more than 8 games last year was due to the inability to stop the run. They were unable to do that tonight once again.

If this defence learns to stop the run this year, in a big hurry, the Bengals will make some noise in the playoffs this year. If not, they will finish the best 7-9 team in NFL history!!!! :D

It seems that our first teamers hung right with their first teamers. The Pats were just deeper and their second and third teamers took it to ours. Also, the Bengals were really thin on the front 7 defensively and fatigue was definitely a factor in the second half.

Teams dont pull out their blitzes, teams barely utilize their offenses, starters either dont play at all or play 1 quarter, and in many cases the game is decided by players who wont even end up on NFL teams once the season starts.

I'd be suprised if has over 500 yards ever again.
Unfortunatly, I so agree!! :(

thoughts on the other night's game:

no tackling. not surprising, considering that it's the very first preseason matchup. I saw linemen bumping ball carriers and hoping they'd just fall down.

Perry needs to brush up on his blocking. Kitna got nailed because Perry missed an easy block.

Chad was running his mouth, but I don't see it as a big deal. CJ is a true teamer, and he's happiest when the TEAM is successful. at least that's what he told me in a post-game interview.

Carson must have been sleepy. he was just a yawner.

what the hell is Kitna doing laughing about a botched snap? straighten up, boy! the future of this franchise almost rides on your shoulders!

more thougths:

will we see Pollack play this year? do we even want to anymore? dammit, I was really hoping he would be the centerpiece in their run-stopping woes, but he's not firing his agents anytime soon, so...

No, that's Pardon the Interuption. Around the Horn has 4 sportswriters and a "host" all connected via satellite. The "host" asks them questions and as each responds, the host doles out "points." The "winner" gets their own 60 second rant or something at the end. It's mostly silly, but entertaining, especially when he mutes one of the guys for making a really bad or off topic point or subtracts points. Occasionally, the writers start to get into a PTI style yelling match, but the host usually doesn't let that go on and will mute someone out.

Man I cannot stand around the horn. The host is a bufoon. If they could put him on mute it would be much better

Back on the topic of the Orange & Black... wow, Marvin's a little ticked off at Pollack and his agents! (http://www.bengals.com/press/notebook.asp?iCurPage=0&notes_id=749)

These are for sure, the harshest words I have heard from Marvin Lewis since he has been here!! I am loving this guy, and what he is all about, more and more everyday!! :D

GEORGETOWN, Ky. - With David Pollack’s holdout stretching to 18 days and 20 practices Monday morning, Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis had his harshest words yet for one of three unsigned first-round draft picks left in the NFL.

Lewis reiterated that he believes the club has offered Pollack a good enough to deal to have signed, but also vowed, “The one thing we do (as an organization) is we’re going to continue to learn from these things.”

A visibly frustrated Lewis chose a news conference to discuss how Pollack’s holdout has flown in the face of the unselfish culture he’s created in his three seasons running the Bengals.

“I think we’ve really fought very hard to eliminate these kind of actions around here and it’s a shame that it occurred,” Lewis said. “We have other guys who have chosen to be here and we’ve eliminated selfishness that occurs. I’ve said it many times. If that’s what it comes down to, a dollar here a dollar there, they’re on the wrong football team. This football team will never, ever be guided by one guy. We’re not going to be compromised by one player or one person and that’s not going to change.

“That’s been important. It’s important to the guys who sit in these chairs every night that we do not change that because we believe in that," said Lewis in a room that doubles as the team's meeting space. "It’s been proven around the league that’s what wins.”

Lewis reiterated that he feels the club has given in every way to Pollack’s agents, and “then it’s not good enough.”

"At some point," Lewis said, "a player has to make a decision. 'Know what? Enough is enough. Let’s go. Let’s go.' "

so, what's the over/under on number of games Pollack plays this year? 8? 9?

He's going to have a hard time busting into the linebacker corps if he keeps waiting. Landon Johnson, Thurman, and Simmons sounds like a pretty damn good group of linebackers to me.

I don't know. On one hand, I think they'll be ok without him. But if Marvin cares enough about the guy to get this frustrated, that tells me something.

Set it at 2. I will take the under. And that will be just fine with me. I think Landon will do a fine job.

Not yelling,” Lewis said. “Correcting.”

“You know Marv,” said defensive tackle John Thornton. “He wants you to do everything right. Starting with getting up on the right side of the bed.”

Then get ready for Lewis to roll his eyes and yell, “Hey, 51, you didn’t make the bed right.”

A sampling from Monday morning’s practice:

* “Come here, 51. Come here. You can’t let him just go by like that,” Lewis barked as Thurman ended up standing next to Lewis to watch the defense’s next snap.

* “Come up into the B gap. That’s your play. You want an invitation?” Lewis asked when Thurman didn’t get to a running play up the middle in time.

* “I’m his personal project,” Thurman said. “He’s trying to mold me into one of the great ones, so he’s on me. He had (Ray Lewis), so I guess he knows the things that make a great player. That’s why I’m taking it all in. So he’s staying on me.”

Sometimes, it can make Thurman laugh.

“He told me one time if I ever looked back at the quarterback when I got a receiver, he’s going to kick me in the (bleeps),” he admitted.

I think Thurman will be in the running for Rookie of the Year come Dec.

Pollack will not!!!

Of course he's frustrated, Pollack was the Bengals #1 freaking pick!
It's discouraging to hear so much good stuff about a guy and not have him play.

gods be praised. I wonder if Marvin will play him in the 4th quarter on Friday night to see how much Pollack really remembers.
