A simple thread - post, in your opinion, your choice for the greatest team in any sporting field and why you chose them.
Who: Hannover 96

Why: They serve great beer in the stadium, and their captain's name is Lala.

Ok, Ok, seriously...
I'll start with the greatest (american) football team for me...as sad as it is, I loved the 86 and 87 Browns. I know, I know, horrible team to love and think is the greatest. Even with their faults...and they had many, I grew to love that team. They could do no wrong...except fumble on the 1-yard line :cough:
Not truely a great team, but I'll have to think of others...

OK, this really hurts me. The best team I think I ever saw was the 1998 Yankees. The reason is simple. Though they had not a single player who dominated in any statistical category, they put together one of the great seasons in baseball history. No MVP, No Cy Young winner, no Rookie of the Year, just an assembly of great talent all on the same page. Second place goes to the 1961 Yankees. Mickey Mantle was my hero.

Somebody hadda mention Nascar!
Hendrick Motorsports has won the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series Championship in 1995 with Jeff Gordon, 1996 with Terry Labonte, 1997 and 1998 with Jeff Gordon and again in 2001 with Jeff Gordon. Hendrick Motorsports won its’ first NASCAR Busch Series Championship with driver Brian Vickers in 2003. The organization has also won three NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series crowns with Jack Sprague in 1997,1999, and 2001.

Royce Gracie. Amazing doesn't begin to describe him. His name still causes discomfort to all the strike oriented martial artists and brawling punchers who outweighed him and out talked him, but couldn't beat him. He was not the biggest, nor the strongest, just the most skilled and the most dangerous.

CAN 7 SVK 3
CAN 8 SWE 1

CAN 3 CZE 1

Canada 6 vs. Russia 1
and that russian team just happened to be sporting the #1 and #2 picks in the last NHL entry draft.

Well I gotta say The Bills in Tecmo Super Bowl are the greatest.
They foiled my undeated season yesterday. Andre Reed was catching everything from QB Bills, even when I had him covered with Albert Lewis and Derrick Thomas. Thurman Thomas scored three touchdowns (he was in "excellant" condition).
Although, now that I think of it, they may not be as good as the 49ers in the original Tecmo Bowl.

Ayrton Senna had twice the talent as Schumacher and Nigel, though I really like Nigel. A.J. Foyt was also one tough SOB, could win in just about anything. Mario Andretti still has the coveted F1, ChampCar (CART), Indy 500 and Daytona 500 wins. Foyt has the LeMans win instead of an F1 title. Motorsports is too specialized and business-driven today to see that kind of crossover.

And when you do see it, it's usually wankers like Robby Gordon who should just stick to the one specialty they're good at because they stink at everything else they try.

What? Over Nigel Mansell. Now he had everything including a 'tache. Right on. Incidentally, have you seen pictures of old Nige lately? He is now sadly sans 'tache, and frankly looks half the man he was back in his halcyon days of winning world championships. If we are talking racing drivers, though, mention must be made of the mighty James Hunt. He smoked like a trooper, drank and shagged his way around the racetracks of the world, drove with cavalier abandon, verve and style, plus his surname rhymed with "cunt". What a combo.

What the bloody hell??? No way in hell, dude. I wouldn't recognize QB Bills in a police lineup of washed up circus clowns. You just need a team with a better D.
But now that you brought it up, consider me intrigued that you still play this game, and somehow I have to play you, someday. You have been warned.
Although, now that I think of it, they may not be as good as the 49ers in the original Tecmo Bowl.
You mean the Bears, dude. When you gave the ball to Walter Payton, you basically stuffed some leather in an Abrams tank. He shedded tacklers like they were 8 bit globs of jelly. No contest there.

I seriously expected this thread to be about Muhammad Ali based on the title.
I know college wrestling fans don't really chew up the bandwidth on these boards, but you'd be hard pressed to find a guy more dominant in his sport than Cael Sanderson:
http://www.spartanwrestling.com/Gallery/Other/SandersonCael4.jpg
Here he is winning his unprecedented 4th NCAA championship, extending his collegiate record to 149-0. Even Dan Gable lost once in college.
And no thread like this would be complete without mentioning Lance Armstrong.
And if you consider horse racing a sport, Secretariat's 31-length win at the Belmont is hard to compete with.
