yeah i was semi inspired by your style actually. wanted to give it a shot. though i probably did the line art differently, i used illustrator for that. i actually did a whole bunch of different coloring styles before i came up with that last one. i ended up merging two of my favourite color styles. on is just a two toned flat coloring style (ala how i usualy do stuff and my capstone) the shirt was me effin around with some opacity brushes and stuff. i only used one shade of blue. its the brush and opacity that gave it its shading.

have you tried copic markers? i particularly love the colorless blender in this line - it's a very wet marker and very easy to use/blend. just thought i'd kick that nugget your way!

My great-grandmother made rugs - do you use wool fabric & burlap? Cool colors - a llama show?! where was it? when? I love going to animal shows - went to a poultry show & saw all kinds of mutant chickens & ducks.

I hook into a bleached open weave linen, which is like burlap but without the smell or scratchy "hairs". I do use dyed wool, some of which I dye myself. I have a cutter designed specifically for cutting different widths of wool strips. I love rug hooking. It's like painting with fabric. ;)
Do you still have any of your grandmother's rugs? They're pretty collectible now. Back then, most rugs were hooked for utilitarian purposes. Mine are art rugs which I don't put on the floors. I have two cats and a dog; 'nuff said.
The llama and alpaca show was held at a large farm up near Greenville on the weekend of March 18th. I love llamas and March 18th was my birthday, so my husband and youngest son and I went up and spent a couple of hours. It's the largest show in their industry, so there were hundreds of animals there for judging.
I love shows like that, too. I really had a great time, and we took over 70 photos (with permission) of llamas and alpacas. I'm going to hook up a variety of rugs with them to sell at the show next year as a vendor. I think I could do a good business there. :)

Animal people are nuts - do a bunch & set up a booth...work in some raw wool from one of them & I'll be they'll pay $$$.
My dad has one of her rugs - it is ugly - but it is nice to have something she actually made. Next time I'm down there I'll get them to dig it out & I'll take a pic. I tried it once.

I'd like to see a photo of it if you ever do get one taken. I love old rugs and some of the patterns are very cool.
I showed some of my animal rug photos to the vendors at the llama show and they were very impressed. They said I could do well there, and the booth fee is really cheap. I bought some alpaca wool yarn and will definitely be incorporating it into my rugs. :)

very true. that guy's work is very intruiging and sad at the same time. did you by any chance catch that documentary on him (Cincinnati Film Society showed it about 2 years ago), In the Realms of the Unreal? The Pat Graney Dance Company (presented here by CDT) did a dance piece based on his "Vivian Girls" too. It was very well done and truly captured the essence of his work.

I've been trying to get back into making art. I've had several false starts over the past couple years but I'm hoping this time it sticks.
I'm trying my had at some watercolor/mixed media stuff and it rough going cause I'm traditionally an oils and acrylics guy but watercolors are so much easier to clean up. (and i don't have to work in a cold basement)
Also these are just pictures taken with my digital camera I couldn't be bothered with getting the scanner hooked up and out.
This first one is still a work in progress.

This thread is very impressive/humbling. Congrats all around.
I just started some painting classes and obviously I'm sticking to abstract (well, since I can't draw). I tired some watercolors this weekend for the first time ever. I'm inclined to post them here, not because they're any good (they aren't), but because this worked for me in the photography thread -- showing things somehow stimulate me to do more.

Lately I've been nostalgic & revisiting old things I've done & trying them again. The lastest was "Overwhelming", a drawing I did back in the early 90's on a whim. I just redid it & finished it yesterday. I guess you "could" look at the 1993 version as a "draft" & this one as the more concerted effort. The first one is the original take.
I drew them using a ball point pen. Do you realize how much ink one of those pens has? Wow. A lot. I do believe I have more than ½ left still!

Never apologize for your work. Even if you messed up, we don't have to know it. If you forgot a shadow, a line, a color change... to us, it could be intentional or it could be a happy accident. If you say it's an error, or feeble, then we'll have a hard time interpreting it for ourselves.
2nd, let me try to state clearly...
It is art. Art is how you write a word, not just the word. It's something made to be beautiful, or perhaps ugly... it's meant to invoke, not just emotion or a meaning, but in the least... interest. So it's art. K? k.
Now, on to my comments about it:
I like it. I enjoy how the color is balanced (both grayscale) between the subjects on the left & right. It helps connect them across the layout. I don't know if the black outlines were intentionally made the same, but I noticed that. It's not that important, but it could add more interest if they were different... although it's obviously interesting enough for me to have written this much about the lines the way they were. : )
Personally I get "happy" when I see that. More "amused" than happy, actually. Her reaction at the end just seems "overreactive" so I can't help but feel wry or it's sarcastic.

Thanks, Due. Yep, I see that some of the things I wanted really did come across and some of the mistakes I made (the black outlines were just really a brush limitation on Illustrator, I didn't think it would be noticed) also showed up.
So yeah, thanks. This gives me the motivation to try some more, which was the entire point of the original post. :)

Now I don't know what is camera-glare or intentional variations, but I will say that I'm enjoying the differences in hue & lighting throughout which supply it with a dynamism I enjoy.
What scale is that on? It appears you put some of the white on while the blue was wet, or the white is irredescent silver & it's glimmering or something. What's the story?

This reminds me of doodles I've been doing since grade school.
I'd draw four or five geometric figures spaced evenly on a piece of paper, and draw "ripples" around 'em until the ripples joined as one.
I created one on Autocad with six polygons, using colored ripples. Too big a drawing to load into Flickr, or I'd post it here.

First of all, thanks!:D
It's 12" x 13" on a piece of plywood. The white is just white, but the blue bleeds through, because I had to thin the white enough to flow like that.
The camera glare is what it is, I don't have a proper set-up for shooting paintings, and some of the variances are intentional.

Thanks! I know, and 99.9% of people don't know what hooked rugs are anyway. Everyone immediately thinks of those yarn latch hook rugs, which are completely different. Like comparing hand thrown pottery with ceramic molds...;)
When I tell people what I create, I do usually say it's fiber art. "Traditional rug hooking" doesn't clarify it unless you already know what it is. It's actually painting with wool, when you get right down to it. There are plenty of trite, generic hooked rug designs out there, but there are also myriad original, beautiful pieces as well.

What are the dimensions?
I know the flash makes it a bit hard to interpret it in reality. However, I will say that the placement of the flash looks like the Sun on the same horizon point & getting the same reflective variations.
I enjoy the hinted symmetry of the clouds & fish & their obvious disconnection. I like the directional pull across the red brach & the split. The color scheme adds interest because how the fish & clouds look more like the "art" & the branch & stuff are made more "real" because of it.
I dig it. : )

Has anyone thought about art with other artists?
I'm a painter and wonder if anyone would consider trading me a piece of their work for one of mine? We'd both have to want each others stuff but it the easiest way that I can see to decorate my home with art thats not mine and comes from other talented people.
IS this the wrong place to post this question?

Has anyone thought about art with other artists?
I'm a painter and wonder if anyone would consider trading me a piece of their work for one of mine? I thought about doing the thing where we pass art around & just let someone work on it for a bit & then return it. I was gonna do it virtually. Like, a game on the boards.
Person A puts up some beginning part of an art piece. Person B (their response) they take that piece & add/adjust it, as they wish. It gets passed on & on. Kinda like the "too many cooks" method... just for fun.
