I'm so low-brow when it comes to art. I love some French painter whose name starts with a 'B.' Ends in "ouis" or something, I think. If anyone knows who I'm talking about and could tell me, I'd love them forever.

More Modern: Georgia O'Keefe's watercolor work is incredible, I also like Van Gogh and Matisse.

Contemporary: Not a clue

I loves me some Dali. It gets really old when I have to explain to people that he's more than just melting clocks.

I'm also partial to Degas (not read de-gas, although I'm partial to that, too). :p

I love pop art and modern graffiti artists who (and this is important, now) are actually good at it. They come up with fantastic characters, and my brain melts when i try to figure out how they do those huge complicated tags in like, one night.

FRED TOMASELLI assembles hybrid pictures out of various materials, including paint, pills, hallucinogenic plants, and photo collage. Encapsulated in tamperproof resin, these arraigned substances alter perception by traveling to the brain through the act of seeing. His work is inspired by the ideal that painting is both a mirror on the world and a window to another reality. His art blurs the distinction between the real and the artificial and is shaped by the chemical sublime. Fred's work has been seen at numerous institutions around the world including a recent survey show at the Palm Beach ICA which then traveled to Site Santa Fe. He had a recent solo show at the Whitney Museum at Philip Morris, New York which traveled to the Indianapolis Art Museum. His work has been included in the Corcoran, Lyon, Berlin and Liverpool Biennials. He's also participated in numerous museum group shows such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Brooklyn Museum and the Whitney Museum. He's had solo gallery shows at Jack Tilton Gallery, New York; Christopher Grimes Gallery, Los Angeles; Galleri Anne de Villepiox, Paris; Gallerie Gebaure, Berlin; and White Cube, London. He is represented by the James Cohan Galley, New York where his next solo show will open in May.

I don't get Mark Rothko. There I said it.

hehe The first time I saw a Rothko I was absolutely speechless. ... And then the friend I was with at the time blurted out "I could have done THAT."

My favorite painting of all time? Van Eyck's http://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/WebMedia/Images/22/NG222/eNG222.jpg

I like Goya & I'll second whoever gave the nod to Titian.

Even though I'm a math geek, I loathe Escher's works.

Painting (I suppose with all art) is such a personal feeling... I don't think there is any rhyme or reason to why any of us like any particular work. For me I like what I like because of the amazing feeling that hits me when I see something. I think all that matters is how something makes you feel.

I love all the old Italian masters--Michelangelo, DaVinci. Those are almost givens, though--some of their work is so astoundingly beautiful that it's almost impossible not to be moved by it. Same with a lot of the French Impressionists--there's so much beauty and grace there.

Individual artists I love:
Van Gogh
Paul Gauguin
Marc Chagall
Edward Hopper

My knowledge of art and art history is still pretty limited, but I've been trying to learn more, going to museums...there are some pretty cool ones in this thread I'd never heard of before.

But for what it's worth, some artists I like:

Andy Warhol
Diego Rivera
Max Ernst
Frida Kahlo
Pablo Picasso

I also really like the Canadian "Group of Seven":

I loves me some Dali. It gets really old when I have to explain to people that he's more than just melting clocks.

Amen ! Dali has been my fave since I discovered him in middle school, but I've since learned there were some other great Surrealist like Max Ernst, Man Ray, Joan Miro & Jean Magritte. Alot of Art snobs act like if you say you like Dali, then you are uneducated and just know Dali because of his popularity.

One of the greatest days of my life was going to the Dali Museum in St. Petersburg. I was completely in awe ! Any fan of art should definetly schedule a stop there if they're going to Florida.

As for the Impressionists, I've never really cared for impressionism. Don't get me wrong, I respect it and realize the importance of the movement, and there are some isolated works that I do like, but on the whole I'm just not a fan of it.

I've never been a fan of Impressionism either. I have always viewed it as mere calendar art and not much more. However, every time I cover Monet and the Impressionists in my art history class, I come away with a strong sense of awe over what these artists accomplished. So for me, it is not the impressioned look that appeals to me, but the strive for something artistically new that still celebrates art for the sake of art that I appreciate more.

I have a number of favorite artists but my favorite painter is probably Caravaggio.

i have no time for people who think they can paint a rothko, and think that it's all a scam. you either are open to it or forget it, you can go look at prints of dogs and horses.

i love van eyck, who must have been OC. this painting is a marvel.

i love velasquez' royalty portraits. the costumes are really over-the-top.

yeah, i don't care what anything means. i just like it if it connects. something either makes me stop, look, and react or start musing, or i just keep walking.
