I paid for the pro account, so I can upload up to 2GB per month, I think. With the pro account, you have unlimited storage. Since I've just started a photo blog (Crumbs and Morsels (http://crumbsandmorsels.blogspot.com) ), it suits me for now.

B&W images usually convey a stronger sense of texture, shadow and light. Since I believe this is probably your intent, I wanted to show what the image would look like.
Bear in mind that a desaturated (and slighly tweeked) color image does not have the same tonal range and contrast curve of an original captured with B&W film.

I'm probably gonna get murdered for saying so, but I was never terribly impressed by Ansel Adams' photography. I mean it's lovely, but it never evoked any emotion from me other than "oh, nice mountain". I'm just that kind of observer I guess.

Well I know that technically speaking Adams is amazing, his work just doesn't excite me, and never has. I got the same kinda lecture from some old roommates when I told them I didn't care for classic rock. I understand where they're coming from, I just don't dig it.

I think I know what you mean. I'm not sure Adams excites me either, though I claim to not really like Monet and the Impressionists yet they too are pretty important in the history of art. So I have come to the conclusion that landscapes (like Adams, a popular Impressionist subject) don't excite me...it's the subject, not the artist.
Perhaps you too?
But if you spend some time with an Ansel Adams and really engage the work, you might be surprised to find they are awe-inspiring. It happens to me everytime. No matter how much I poo-poo Monet or Adams as mere calendar art, I experience a true aesthetic moment when I really engage their works.

I can understand a lack of enthusiasm for Ansel's work; only in the past few years have I really begun to appreciate it myself.
On the surface, I suppose pictures of mountains and trees can be boring; I believe one needs a greater sense of Ansel's vision/passion/history to truely appreciate his work.
You may see nothing more than a picture of a giant rock when looking at Moon and Halfdome, but I see (or better yet, "sense") the awe he felt when capturing and printing photographs of the places dearest to his heart.
I believe one's knowledge of his extraordinary technical expertise, of the exacting standards he applied to convey the majesty of nature and of his contributions to the Sierra Club and conservation in general give a greater appreciation for his prints.
Those aren't just pretty pictures of rocks; they're his best attempt to express the deep, nearly indescribable emotion he felt (the definition of "vision") for his beloved Yosemite. Ansel's prints are awe inspiring because he was a master at communicating through the photographic medium, his sense of wonder. A true artist doesn't just endeavor to reproduce his subject, but also to represent his feelings for it.
I urge anyone who has the chance to see original A.A. prints to do so; copies in books, on the Internet or poster form are a far, far cry from the real thing. Only the in the original prints are the subtlety and delicate tonal range fully realized.

I had my 35mm loaded with black and white with me at the time, and the light just wasn't right for that. Too flat. Not enought contrast - I wouldn't have ended up with full zone range. Plus, taking time to set up the tripod and meter it just right, and bracket the shots - my friends would have left me behind.
I love black and white. i'll need to scan some in, and post them. (hate scanning prints, btw.) I took a training course at Rosewood Arts Center, so ican finally get back into the darkroom. Been a long time, since before college.

The NY Times becomes aware of the importance of informative captioning of photographs or photo-montages used in their paper. While some of us may know who Andres Serrano is, simply identifying him as the picture maker does not adequately inform the average reader that the photography used may be staged.
from nytimes.com:
Magazine editor Gerald Marzorati and Ms. Ryan were understandably focused on coming up with bold images - especially for the cover - that would draw readers into the magazine and to the article by Mr. Lelyveld. To compete in the magazine world, they often seek photographs and illustrations with an edge or attitude that ranges well beyond what appears in the news columns of the newspaper. "In prose terms," Mr. Marzorati said, "it's like comparing breaking news to a poem."
So how did they decide on what kind of explanation to give readers? Mr. Marzorati said the "conceptual" photographs were so "over the top that I didn't think someone would say this is a real photograph." He continues to believe he was right. "The vast, vast majority of readers realized it wasn't real," he said.
The Times's "Guidelines on Our Integrity," which apply to all parts of the paper, emphasize the question of whether an image is intended to portray reality. "Images in our pages that purport to depict reality must be genuine in every way," the section on photography and images begins. Basically, the guidelines say any image that doesn't depict reality should be explained, "if the slightest doubt is possible."
This, I think is one of the most insteresting discussions about photography. The idea that one doesn't always take pictures, but make them. Few people realize this and see photography as real or as proof.

Here are a few images I shot at a local state park. The scans are horrible, but the small image size hides some of that. I really need to get a scanner and do it properly instead of having a cheap photo CD made.

There was a building fire about 10 blocks from my house, and someone just left an upright piano on the sidewalk that they'd pulled out of the fire.
It's a good thing I went to photograph it when I did, because they'd hauled it away a few days later. I'll be posting more of the piano shots on my blog in the next few days. (See Crumbs and Morsels link below.)

I'm down for this,
I own a couple of "toy cameras" that are too much fun, as long as the lighting is there, but me and a friend made some filters for the cameras that can give awesome grayscape look on b/w 400 speed the sad thing is it does seem to work so well standard C-41 and others, most of the time I have to use some real pro-film, but only one of them takes 35mm the other is that goofy 100 shit

I was at the Forget Cassettes show @ Alchemize a while back and took some photos. To my horror, benevolent mother Kodak ruined the negatives by cutting them in the middle of frames and printed every single photo out of register.
I salvaged the best of the undamaged frames by printing them by hand on the highest contrast paper I could lay my hands on (Grade 5). Unfortunately, my favorite shots were ruined, but here are the results. Sorry the quality sucks, bear in mind these are flatbead scans of hand printed images.

And Kodak's not making any paper for us darkroom users anymore. Their paper sucked, but, it signals some bad stuff for the DIY photographers...

Where were you when you took the sunset pic? It reminds me of I-40 in New Mexico or I-10 in Arizona. I miss that part of the country because of sunsets like this almost every day. Great shot and thanks for sharing.

This might not be the best place to ask this, but does anyone have any thoughts on protecting your pictures online? I don't know if I have stuff that anyone would want to steal, but as I'm getting more pictures I like, I'm increasingly reluctant to just throw them out there. What do y'all do to keep people from just downloading your images and calling them their own?
And while I'm here, a couple more:

i would try Flickr (http://www.flickr.com) ..they give you options on setting up copyrights if you wish. I felt the same way initially, but once i started exploring the site, i realized that are far more skilled photographers with nice professional equipment and many great photographs, that mine probably wouldn't draw enough attention. I haven't had any problems thus far..
its a nice little photo community if you ask me....

Also when you post photos online, make sure they are saved at 72dpi, which is what you need to view photos nicely on a computer screen. For people to actually print anything out, they would need to have at least 300dpi or larger to make a good photo. Otherwise, they would just essentially be stealing a thumbnail, and no one can really sell that for any particular purpose. Now however, if you are worried about it going around on the web in digital form.......that's a separate issue.

definately good points...
flickr has an option for permissions on photos. i have set mine to only allowing contacts to view full sizes, otherwise everyone else only gets to view a medium size at around 500 x 375 pixels at 72dpi...

Do you guys digitally alter these pictures after taking them? In other words, do you enhance lighting, color, contrast with Photoshop or something?
I'd guess the (insanely amazing) picture below suffered lots of editing. How would one go about that?

I shoot most of mine in RAW and then use photoshop to add/subtract color, brightness, hue, sat, etc.
That pic could have been taken with a green filter, or the same effect could have been added in photoshop.
From my professor in college.
Q. How do you tell when a digitial image is good?
A. If you can look at it and say to yourself "they used motion blur here, guassion blur here, and the solarize effect here" then they did not understand the software or know how to use it. If you can walk up to a piece and be amazed and not have a clue, that is art.
That pic is art, beautiful!!!

I also shoot mine in RAW format, and I use the RAW image converter plugin for Photoshop.
It allows me to adjust the exposure and other settings afterwards if need be.
It's similar to adjustments that can be made in the darkroom if you are developing film negatives.

Actually, I didn't do anything to that picture. I just left the exposure open for a long time, and the lighting was a halogen streetlight, which are actually green. We just become used to the light and see it as white.

I agree with SallyC....flickr is definately a great way to go, the best in my opinion. There are some really great photos and photographers on flickr and when they leave comments on some of your shots, it's kind of nice to get feedback from them, especially when they are really good and they take interest in your work.
From the photos you put up here, you seem to have a good eye for composition, and your camera doesn't seem to be bad at all, it seems to capture color very nicely.

oh, i forgot to mention that there are a few third-party sites that work in conjunction with flickr so you can do some neat things with your photos.
the best one i've come across is
Flickr Toys (http://www.flagrantdisregard.com/flickr)

Ha, I love how the scratches on that chair make a face.
it's hard to tell in that shot, but it actually says "DIE", at first i saw the face too, but when i got closer, it could see it more clearly.

I agree with SallyC....flickr is definately a great way to go, the best in my opinion. There are some really great photos and photographers on flickr and when they leave comments on some of your shots, it's kind of nice to get feedback from them, especially when they are really good and they take interest in your work.Agreed. And once you join some groups, you find that people in those groups add you as a contact, and it's way easier to check out their photos that way. I've definitely found some inspiration in some of my contacts' photos -- especially the local people who shoot around Mpls/St. Paul where I do.

From the photos you put up here, you seem to have a good eye for composition, and your camera doesn't seem to be bad at all, it seems to capture color very nicely.

GM and SallyC, thanks for the tip. Actually, I'm already an avid Flickr searcher (and I do have some old, unimportant pics there), I was just deciding to update to a pro account. Which I already did, but I still haven't uploaded anything relevant. I'll add you guys as soon as I do so. Anyway, I think I learned a lot by looking at Flickr photos and their properties.
BTW, it's not that my camera is bad -- it's a Kodak V550 --, it's just too simple. And a bit uncomfortable, which makes it quite hard to take steady pictures. Further, now that I know (kinda) what's aperture and exposure and ISO and etc., I want to try and configure these things myself, without being limited to the camera's set-up.

Has anyone used a teleconverter on their 35mm camera before? I got a 2X teleconverter as a gift for my Nikon N70, and although I've figured out how to attach it to the lens, I have yet to see how well it works. I normally use the autofocus feature and just mess around with aperature, so I'm still relatively new to manual focus -- especially with the teleconverter.
Pros? Cons? Anyone?
