I think the method may vary according to ethnicity. When a friend of mine in HS was growing his, he cut his hair really short, had his sister divide the hair into sections and he twisted the stuff constantly. I think there was a hair product and some teasing involved in the beginning too.

And the chick is both strangely hot and longing to be in the '90's....

I once saw a shop in Shinjuku that offered dreadlocking for Japanese people. Until you've seen a Japanese guy with dreads, you don't know what funny is.

I remember my friend John, who was a big Phish fan, used to get their newsletter. In one issue there was a bingo game based on things seen at the concert, one of them being "white guys with dreads" (prolly the easiest and quickest to fill at a Phish show). There's a student here at my school who reminds me of the lead singer of The Spin Doctors who had some pretty ridiculous dreads; he's obviously been at it awhile.

And for some reason whenever I see something about dreadlocks, I think of a Letterman Top-10 list which featured "Electric Dreadlock De-Tangler" on its list of new GE products.
