The Saint: The Early Episodes Volume 1 (A&E Home Video)
Roger Moore first appeared on American television in 1958 in a syndicated series called Ivanhoe, before making his network TV debut in The Alaskans the following year. A contract dispute between James Garner and Warner Brothers Studios lead to Moore spending a season on Maverick as cousin Beau in 1960. The future James Bond, however, returned to England to take his longest-running and most successful TV role as The Saint. The program was eventually shown by NBC (simultaneously with its run on British TV) for two seasons starting in 1967.
This set features the 12 episodes that make up the shows first season, which began in 1962. Fans of Moore’s duty as 007 will enjoy this collection, as his debonair charm and easygoing manner are at the forefront of his character Simon Templar.
The black and white picture is crisp, but the audio is a little scratchy in spots and blares a bit at higher volume. However, this is minor flaw, as the series itself is a prime example of British intrigue and mystery. In 1997, of course, a movie version was made sans Moore (replaced, as it were, by Val Kilmer). That film featured a great re-working, by Orbital, of the original (and catchy) Saint theme. Don’t let the cinematic version deter you though, as the TV series is classic and a must for true Anglophiles.
