As many of you may have heard, THE DECEMBERISTS had just started their North American tour when all of their gear was stolen at a show in their hometown of Portland, Oregon.
Their entire gear trailer was stripped (of everything but their merch) and found outside of Portland. The band still have a complete listing of all their gear available on the news section of their website which you can use to keep an eye out for stolen stuff online or in pawn shoppes.
The band's brand new sound engineer literally was only with the band for that one show and then lost all of his equipment in the theft. The band is taking donations on their website (between $1 and $100) to help replace some of this gear and instruments.
You can help out via PayPal here:
www.decemberists.com/fund.html
The band have also posted an address for people who do not wish to use PayPal. You can send checks payable to The Decemberists here:

A message from the band on their site says ---
The support so far has been astounding! For those of you who have donated money, we’re all completely bowled over right now about how incredibly sweet you all are. We really can’t thank you enough.

What's with these bands getting all their gear stolen? Can't they get at least one person to watch their trailer? You'd think after it happened to Sonic Youth and what-not that bands would start to make it more of a priority... that sucks big-time.

Shit, that's horrible. I hope they don't have to cancel too many shows.

yeah - i bought their album so hopefully that can be my donation. and i'm seeing them in fargo in a few weeks so there's another tenner from me.
my big questions: why doesnt Kill Rock Stars buy them new equipment? shouldnt a label cover these type of things? especially since the D's are one of the biggest acts on the label...you want them on the road and playing and not worrying about begging for loose change.

I think that the band are trying to raise money to cover the equipment lost by their sound engineer almost more than their own stuff. I believe that they have been given some replacement gear to continue the tour, but a posting on their site indicates that they feel horrible that the sound guy worked with them for one show and lost his entire career's worth of equipment.
A label like Kill Rock Stars, in all honesty, is going to do what they can...but it's not like the band are signed to some giant conglomerate who can drop thousands and thousands of dollars in the blink of an eye. I would imagine that they can only help so much in a situation like this. It sucks, but the fact that the band didn't have insurance on their stuff is a big part of the problem.

we got our van broken into while it was supposedly being fixed at a garage after being towed in Austin. We called to see if it was fixed and they are like "yeah, but your stereo is gone." luckily all of our gear was at a friend's house.
the point is, you can't be with the van 24 hours a day, and the three hours that you are away eating dinner is when the shit gets stolen.
we built a box with a lock in ours, and I suggested buying a pit bull to live in the back as well, but chances are, someone will break into it again regardless.
side note: Shiv, please send us a copy of the Lounge Act, they stole that too.
if it's online somewhere, send a linky link. great seeing you guys by the way, hope you had fun peeing on hay bales at the vice party.
