Story here (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=541&ncid=541&e=7&u=/ap/20050309/ap_on_he_me/fit_fat_nba). I'm not surprised, didn't a survey a few years ago find that the majority of the league was smokin'? :p

Yeah, BMI is pretty worthless when used alone. Its a shame a lot of online diet sites use it as a primary metric. The best way to tell if you're fat is to look in the mirror. Then go to a doctor to find out how you look on the inside.

Yeah, saying Shaq is obese doesn't seem right.
Maybe it doesn't work well for taller people?
Whoa, he's 325 now and he LOST 40 pounds after he joined the Heat?
Not sure I can imagine being that huge.

no.
the BMI doesn't work for extremely fit people. muscle weighs more than fat. the NBA is beefing up like the rest of the professional sports categories. therefore, they are going to weigh more. the BMI only takes into account weight in relative to height. It does not measure fat % as opposed to muscle %.
now, if only we had a chart measuring steriod usage and based health on that statistic.....
for the average joe sixpack - the BMI is an excellent indicator. I have one in front of me now as matter of fact.
also - the BMI does not take gender into account either. women MUST have a % of body fat higher than men in order to be healthy.

It doesn’t work for average sized people either – there is no accounting for body type.

It's true that the BMI is BS. My BMI is 21.4, but my body fat percentage is 14.5%. I do have a decent amount of muscle mass from lifting, although with this torn rotator cuff, I fear I may lose some of it. :( Point being, my BMI makes me look fatter than I really am (not that I'm thin either, mind you).

according to the BMI you have a body mass index of 24. that is definitely NOT overweight.
28 or so is overweight and above 32 is obese.

I don't think BMI works too well for ladies like me who are, erm, blessed in the chest area either.

nope it surely does not.
pending on how 'blessed' you are however you might consider an 'unblessing' if you're having trouble. insurance can pay for it pending on your docs cooperation in how he codes the "blessing"

I might consider an 'unblessing' later, but right now they're still fairly painless and on the.. perky side? (if you can call D's perky)
I'm sure shaq has this same problem.

this thread is getting into dangerous territory :p
I have noticed a very disturbing trend developing, though
Since I started my new job back in the Fall, I've pretty much worked, socialized(gotten belligerent), and slept. I got home yesterday and decided to join in with my 7 year old brother playing basketball in the driveway. Hadn't done much physical activty other than walking long distances in some time, didn't do anything to limber up, and after running, jumping, and contorting my body for 40 minutes, my neck, elbow, knee, and back were sore.
The knee and elbow went away pretty quickly and I've had a history of back pain since my car accident, but I still couldn't help but be troubled by this. I need to get in better shape!!

I just looked at your profile. you're probably a little too young anyway. but keep it in the back of your mind. especially if you start experiencing back problems. I lost my D's when I lost weight but I kept the C's... I like a C cup. enough witout being too much. B's don't look right if you don't have the tiny waist to pull them off....

My BMI is 21.4
21.4 is a healthy normal BMI. Most BMI calculators that you can find on-line say you are overweight if your BMI is >25. Some say 24.
this is the BMI information from MSN and it is backed up by most weight and nutrition centers:
BMI Weight Status
Below 18.5 Underweight
18.5 - 24.9 Normal
25.0 - 29.9 Overweight
30.0 and Above Obese
I think it is a good starting point, but you do have to take excessive muscle mass into account. I don't know when it would factor it into the above numbers because the reason for the range is to account for individual variation. I read the article as pointing out that just like everything, there are exceptions to any rule. Except gravity. gravity always sucks.
My BMI is 26 and some change (6' 1"). I need to drop ten to fifteen pounds to get into the upper limits of the "normal" range

thats the point, I'm too young to screw around playing basketball with a 7 year old for under an hour and then be sore-I need to get it together
