Badge only?? Does that mean wristbands don't have a chance? I have been so excited about seeing you guys at south by. I thought day parties were free....and those who have badges were attending conferences during the day???? Very confused...and sad...sniff sniff.

Badge Holders only? That's a really shitty thing to do guys. Most WOXY listeners will only have a wristband.

Due to the limited capacity of the venue we decided to offer badge entry instead of making the show invite only.

Webcast Provides Instant Karma from SXSW

By Chris Marlowe

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - KarmaDownload wants to carve out a niche for itself as the online purveyor of the best undiscovered indie music.

The U.K.-based store offers songs from thousands of independent labels along with selected unsigned artists and a collection of exclusive recordings.

To celebrate its expansion into the United States, KarmaDownload and Internet radio station WOXY are co-sponsoring a live music event Thursday at the South by Southwest Music Conference in Austin, Texas. The performances of all seven bands will be played live on WOXY.com, and on-air talent will be conducting interviews with artists and audience members.

KarmaDownload has a preponderance of British acts in its library, which is drawn from agreements with the Association of Independent Music, the Orchard, independent music venue chain Barfly, Beggars Banquet, V2, Ninja Tune, Global Underground and others.

"There will be loads of places to get the commercial hits," said KarmaDownload managing director Jamie Estrin, a former brand manager at Sky Television. "Our objective is to focus on the market that goes to the specialist shops."

Belle and Sebastian, the Wildhearts, the Dears and the Libertines are among the nonmainstream bands who have found an outlet with KarmaDownload.

Simon Wheeler, head of new media at Beggars Group, said, "With Karma now selling directly into the U.S. market, this can only benefit us, our artists and other independent U.K. labels."

Pricing is standard, with most tracks costing 99 cents and albums at $9.99. KarmaDownload songs are in the MP3 format and are free of any digital-rights management restrictions. "We're dealing with music enthusiasts," Estrin said. "We trust that the downloads are for personal use only. And it's working."

Licensing agreements mean some of the listed tracks might not be available for sale in all countries.

Those same licensing vagaries mean American fans can purchase music from before artists made it big. KarmaDownload offers Coldplay's early EP, "Brothers & Sisters," for instance, and other tracks from such bands as Snow Patrol and Keane that are rarities in the United States.

Estrin also is concentrating on getting bands to perform three acoustic tracks each solely for distribution through KarmaDownload. "I'm really quite surprised at the level of bands who agree to do this," he said. "But it's the sort of thing our users expect."
