The thing is, how can we be sure their calculations are correct? This clever little plan of their may instead send the earth reeling off it's orbit and hurling itself directly into the sun. Don't do it!

Dumb, dumb, dumb...

I mean, if everyone jumped onto the Earth at the exact same time:

1) The Earth would be shrunk! not moved out of orbit! All the Australians in Austria, all the Indians in Indo China, & all the Hong Kongans in Hong Cong, would just counter each other, essentially impacting the Earth. When the Earth becomes more dense & shrinks, it goes faster.

2) If we did it at different times due to the time zone shifts, all the motion would disloge the water on our surface, causing it to shrink & swell on the opposite sides. Massive floods, mass hysteria, cats & dogs living together

I think perhaps if 600 million people jumped in exactly the same spot on earth, it might move the planet out of orbit. But that's not possible. These guys are clearly crackheads.

It sure is cold here still

It's only people on the Western hemisphere that are being asked to jump. They have it coordinated with time zones so everyone jumps at once. And you probably would want the jumps spatially separated. Otherwise you'd just drill a giant hole into the Earth. And density of an object has no bearing on the gravitational pull exerted upon it.

This is a pretty dumb idea that in all likelihood won't work. However, it is not as dumb as the people currently criticizing it.

feh. I have a pet peeve with the failure of people to understand basic physics and science, and then make comments as to something being a crackpot theory or not.

I can think of one really, really simple reason why this won't work, at least according to conventional physics.

the best way to end global warming is obviously for everyone to open their windows when the AC is on! duh!

And open your refridgerator doors. You can cool down whole neighborhoods that way.

All we need to do is start using aerosol sprays again. The aerosol cooling would offset the CO2 heating. Plus we'd all have some sweet-ass hair.

I dont care that they are doing it I wanna know what product they are trying to bring attention to by doing it. Web page looks like a familiar advertisement (like Ipod maybe) but becasue I keep myself away from mainstream advertising as much as possible I can't place it.

What product are they trying to sell?

gee, Duemellon, for once I agree with you... or at least your second post:

"lighten up" :]

i laughed when I saw 'world jump day'... pretty funny stuff. because 1) we are in a closed system here on earth. all the forces created by mass and acceleration stay within that system, right. now were an asteroid from outside of our system to hit us... and 2) the seasons are not at all caused by our eliptical orbit but by the angle of the earth's axis.

so... i laughed, thought some others might get a laugh to... :] didn't think people would be offended it, but hey, free world--er, free country.

I think this was developed by a pretty funny young person somewhere just across the border in Indiana. Why? because they list 'Indiana (east)' as part of the Eastern Time zone. and why would anyone from somewhere else know about Indiana's wacky time zone games? A lot of states have multiple time zones, but they aren't pointed out on their 'world jump day coordination thingee'.

so it's kinda like a global email event. well, half the globe, they got that right at least--only 12 of the time zones jump. :]

:D

hey, that looks cool, appairently on July 1st, a lady is supposed to levitate while wearing a salad strainer and then a couple of virtual people hook up--digital bernard and uber ursula, i think that's it!

But that's why it's funny. It almost makes sense for a split science, then you realize that it's intentionally stupid. Why would the Earth occupy a "particularly fragile orbitational position" on exactly July 26, 2006?

If you just think "oh, people don't have enough mass," or "they're jumping in the wrong places," or "they'll jump at off-times," you're missing the parody. It's more clever than that because he already worked that into his theory (in a pseudo-science way). If you look at it as a science nerd, it's just a lot funnier.

Unless we all jump hard enough to leave the earth's gravitational well, we'll fall right back and, because of conservation of momentum, no net shift in the earth's orbit will occur.

So jump really hard

"The scientist incorporated a variety of siemographic data ranging from impacts of comets (comet "Joulios" hitting the surface of the Pacific Ocean 3-21-2001)..."

I must have missed the news on 2-21-2001 and all the other days that comets hit the surface of the Earth. :p
