Daughter of MLK Jr. Marches Against Gay Marriage

ATLANTA - The Rev. Bernice King, daughter of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., will join a prominent Atlanta pastor today in a march that opposes same-sex marriage as part of a larger, church-centered empowerment movement. The event has been criticized by gay-rights organizations, which say it betrays the legacy of the slain civil rights leader.

King's widow, Coretta Scott King, has supported marriage rights for gays and lesbians, as have civil rights figures Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., and Julian Bond, chairman of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

The "Reigniting the Legacy" march, to be led by King and Bishop Eddie Long, will begin at the Martin Luther King Center for NonViolent Social Change. Organizers said they expect 100 pastors and 10,000 marchers to participate.

Long, whose New Birth Missionary Baptist Church has 25,000 members, said his goal was to re-establish an authoritative voice for the Black church on a range of issues including protection of marriage, school choice, affordable health care and "wealth creation" for minorities.

"There has not been a unified voice out of our community since the assassination of Dr. King," Long said. A strong segment of society, he said, "want to go back to basic, fundamental moral beliefs."

Gay rights advocates are well aware of Long's opposition to same-sex marriage. Still, Chuck Bowen, a spokesman for Georgia Equality, said he was surprised to learn about the march.

"I think it's very sad. I think he's abusing the good name of Dr. King and the work he did creating equality for all Americans," Bowen said.

Rosalind McGinnis, managing director of the King center, said the site was public property and that the organization was "not endorsing, nor are we affiliated with, Bishop Eddie Long in any way."

Long was not available for comment Friday, but said in a written statement that the march aimed not "to protest same-sex marriage, but to present a unified version of righteousness and justice."

In November, Georgia voters approved a state constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. In the run-up to the election, the issue split Georgia's Black leadership, sometimes setting pastors at odds with the political caucus forged in the civil rights era. A Pew Research Center poll taken in October showed that 60 percent of Blacks opposed legalizing gay marriage.

In an interview this week, Bernice King acknowledged that the issue has left painful rifts.

"The question is, how do you overcome that pain?" she said. "It may be the wedge that stays with us for a long time. We have to get to a place where it does not become the most defining issue of our time."

Bernice King, 41, the Kings' youngest daughter, has degrees in law and divinity from Emory University and is known as a powerful orator on race and social justice. Recently, she said, she has become the "spiritual daughter" of Long, who has built New Birth into the largest of Atlanta's mega-churches. Among the congregation are prominent state, city and county officials.

Bond said he was disturbed to hear that the march was being linked with Dr. King's name. The civil-rights leader's most-trusted associate, Bayard Rustin, was "an out gay man who was unapologetic about his sexuality," Bond said.

"With so many problems afflicting Black Americans, you wonder, what harm is done by people in love?" Bond said.

it seems like gay rights/gay marriage is a pretty good wedge issue...it looks like its dividing the black community somewhat, based on that Atlanta situation.

I'm going to get on a soapbox here, but I promise it won't be for long.

I don't understand this issue at all. This one is just a no-brainer. Who does it affect if gay people are allowed to get married? Nobody but that couple. Who does it hurt? Nobody. I love the Canadian Supreme Court's stance on this: ok for gays to marry, don't tell the churches what to do. Everybody wins. I'm all for government staying out of churches and staying out of people's bedrooms/lifestyles.

No one is going to put a gun to the heads of these conservative white guys and force them to take a gay husband. Gay marriage doesn't affect them in the least. People should be able to choose any consenting adult as their life partner, and they should get all of the same rights and benefits as anyone else.

Plus, I think gay couples are really missing out on the brevity of legal committment. Without that ball & chain, breaking up is really easy. Gay couples shoudn't be denied taking their relationship to that next level if they so choose. It's nobody's business but theirs.

Sorry, had to rant.

The sad thing is that the number of people in those pictures tells a pretty good part of the story.

Conservative white guys?

Perhaps this is one reason the issue is a bit misunderstood. A lot of people are against gay marriage, not just conservative white guys.

This is very true. That's what makes it such a good wedge issue. This will split blacks. Gotta hand it to the Repubs. Between this and abortion they're wedgin' the hell out of this country.

The people of this country do not understand sep. of church and state. Not at all. When a lot of people think about "America the beautiful" they are actually thinking "America that is just like me is beautiful." They do not understand that respect for individual differences is what this country's SUPPOSED to be all about. They just don't get it, and they don't want to get it.

i'm just going to guess that at least one person in that crowd has been discriminated against for being different in some way.

oh the hypocrisy.

why don't you just print up signs that say "god loves everyone but gays"?

Nice generalization there Frost. (note the sarcasm oozing from those words  ) You consistently make remarks painting a picture of yourself as a christian hating person. You are quick to note that generalizing is bad other places, but once religion comes into play . . . its fuck all christians. I am not saying that is how you intend it, just letting you know that is how it is coming off.

Back to the topic . . .

I honestly am not against gays getting hitched . . . they can experience the joys of divorce too, hehe. But I am not out for it either. My opinion: I don't care either way . . . if a dude wants to marry a dude (or girl marry a girl), go right ahead. It's not my bag of tea, but its a free country.

As far as King protesting, it just goes to show that good jeans aren;t always passed down to the successive generation. Just another example that you should not follow someone and take their word for truth just because their daddy or grand-daddy was a great man.
