This is pretty scary. Is this band well known?

Damn, that's awful.

I thought maybe it was something local, but then I looked it up on Amazon and their cd was released earlier this year by Elektra. Never heard of them, but then I don't follow the metal scene much.

What a fucked up situation! It'll be curious to see if anything more is revealed into what happened here. The way it is reported it sound random, but that seems unlikely.

They just upped it to 5 dead. I have no idea who this band is and I hate heavy metal, but what a tragic, sad event.

Holy crap. I used to listen to Pantera in high school some 10 yrs ago and remember Dimebag (called Diamond) Darrell very well. I'd heard of Damageplan, but being waaay out of the metal scene these days, I had no idea he or Vinnie Paul were in the band. That sucks.

I've been to the Al Rosa, too.

*shudder*

Darrell is confirmed dead. The name of the other band member that died has not been released yet.

In total, three people are dead and at least seven are wounded. Three people in critical condition were taken to Riverside Hospital. One person was taken to Grant Hospital in stable condition, with a gunshot wound to the thigh. A triage center was set up behind the venue to help victims with minor injuries still on the scene.

The band consisted of:

Darrell Abbot (Dimebag or Diamond Darrell: Guitar - Formerly of Pantera)
Vincent Abbot (Vinnie Paul: Drums - Formerly of Pantera)
Patrick Lachman (Vocals & Guitar - Formerly of Halford & Diesel Machine)
Bob Kakaha (Bobzilla: Bass - Friend of Darrell and Vincent)

I've been to Alrosa before and when I went, they frisked everyone who went in. So, not sure what the deal was with security last night.

Huge band in metal right now, actually. I don't listen to them; I just know.

Absolutely horrible. I have no words to describe....oh my gosh.

Participating in what means most to you in life, and someone just takes it from you...and everything else.

Me too. Didn't it seem like that was just the kind of club that this would happen at?

Horrible, horrible news.

I, too, am a reformed 80's metalhead, and knew of Dimebag very well. My old metalhead chums would buy up all of the guitar mags with him on the cover.

Like most of us, I was completely unaware that Damageplan consisted of two former members of Pantera.

Sucks. Bad.

Scary as shit. That's usually the last thing you're worrying about when you're out seeing your favorite band.

This is from MTV News:

Damageplan had just begun their first song in front of several hundred at Alrosa Villa when the gunman jumped onstage, made a comment about Pantera's breakup , and began firing at close range into Darrell's body, shooting him several times before opening fire on the crowd.

Someone murdered 4 people because Pantera broke-up???? WTF?? Now, maybe if they were planning a reunion tour, I'd understand.

This on the same day that Motley Crue gets back together? If the gunman had read the newspaper, this tragedy may have been avoided.

Huh. I didn't even realize from the article that I read earlier before seeing this thread that it was DD that was killed. What a f-ing waste. Why is it I can get patted down and practically strip-searched at a Belle & Sebastian show but somebody can have a gun at a metal concert? Ridiculous... :(

Sad. Unbelievable, really.

The question is, how will this impact the way security is done at concerts and small shows?

I wonder if this will change things, or if things will go on business as usual.

This atrocity was committed on the same day as John Lennon's murder. While I'm not a metal fan, I know that Dimebag Darrell is revered by metalheads the way that others revere Lennon.

What a terrible thing.

I read one report suggesting the shooter actually had DD in a headlock while firing the shots. Don't know if thats true or not.

Here's a post from a friend of mine on another board.

I knew one of Damageplans crew members, we were standing on the stage JUST before the show, but decided that we (my friends and I), needed to use the restroom. After we all left the restroom in the back of the place, I stopped by the bar to buy everyone a round of drinks.

The next thing I know...JUST after they started their first song, gun shots (which sounded like firecrackers) rang out. Vinnie gets up and runs to the front of the stage, only to be pushed off by a bouncer to get him out of the way. My friends and I, instead of running to the front door like the rest of the crowd, make our way back to behind the bar for cover. At this point, shots were STILL being fired...and into the crowd. I look behind me, and there stands Vinnie. He goes into this back room right behind us. We decide to follow him in there.

Now in this back room (shots still going off), its my friends and I, vinnie, a couple of bar tenders and a few other people. Vinnie is losing his mind. All he's wanting to do is get to his bro. There were rumors he got hurt...no...Vinnie was physically fine. I was with him the entire time. A few of the bartenders....a few of them said the shooter was actually dressed up in a police officers uniform (contrary to whats being reported). I honestly...can't remember. There was too much happening at once to be able to pick it out. But that would make sense to why he was able to get into the bar so easily.

The police arrived VERY quickly. We left this back room only after being in there 15 minutes or so, and went outside to what seemed like a movie set. Taped off, choppers, block shut down...it was a night of hell.

Jeez, this is terrible. I'm not a metalhead, but that is really too bad about DD. You just have to scratch your head when crap like this happens. That's too bad.

these nightclub disasters are so awful.

it was a hostage who was in the headlock, but he escaped unscathed because a policeman (who was the guy in uniform) shot the perpetrator down.

This is shocking. I'd like to chalk this up to someone's mental illness, and that may be the case, but it also feels as if the perp just lost it. I don't understand what possesses someone to go to these lengths and measures?

One report has the guy forcing his way in the backdoor and shoting a security guard before he got to the stage.

Rumors are running quite rampant, and frankly, they're kind of annoying. The only confirmed deaths thus far are Dimebag Darrell and two fans. I suspect we'll get plenty of answers in the next few days after an investigation is done.

From todays columbus dispatch

"Police spokeswoman Sherry Mercurio identified three of the victims as ``Dimebag'' Darrell Abbott, who played for the Texas-based band Damageplan, and two other men, fan Nathan Bray, 23; and Erin Halk, 29.

Police said the name of the fifth person killed was being withheld pending notification of family."

Total Dead 5 -
Darrel Abbot, 3 fans and the shooter himself - 5

The New York Times ended their article about this by stating that it occured 24 years to the day that John Lennon was murdered. Very strange. It adds a weird twist to this bizzare, sad story.

Dunlop makes a "Cowboys from Hell" wah pedal that I think is still in production. He also has his own line of guitars with Washburn.

Vinnie Paul Abbott, drummer for the Texas-based band Damageplan, was rushed to safety offstage and tearfully tried to learn his 38-year-old brother’s fate from officers who couldn’t even tell him which hospital he was taken to.

Dear God, that poor man, to see his brother cut down like that..

The shooter obviously had some serious mental issues. I mean, who the hell kills someone because a band broke up?

See, I was just thinking about this last night when i heard the guy was a Marine. Back in the day, before this whole "jock-rock" thing happened in the 90's you'd NEVER see a big meathead football player at a metal show. It was just a bunch of stoners having a good time. Sure there were fights n stuff, but it all escalated when these assholes started showing up, drunk and looking for a fight. That was about the time I started getting outta the scene.

I'm not saying there's a direct correlation to Darrell's death, just pointing out some observations.

What a tragic, awful thing. Poor Vinnie.

According to an interview with the killer's mother, he was a paranoid schizophrenic, and that's why he was discharged early from the Marines:

http://www.nbc4i.com/news/4000346/detail.html

Sounds from the article like he'd been having problems for years (claiming Pantera stole his lyrics), but wasn't diagnosed until he joined the military.
