View Full Version : What is it like to be a swinger?

Since i live in a state where all Dubya has to do is make a well-placed "God bless you, ma'am." to get elected, I have to ask those of you to whom the campaigning is geared towards-

What is it really like to be bombarded from both sides from the media spin doctors?

I am intrigued to find out what perspectives might be out there. I am a lone marshmallow in a sea of fudge when it comes to my political opinion in this state.

Wait a minute...

This thread's topic is far too misleading.

True, but your name fits in nicely. (double pun intended)

So anyway, it's pretty intense here. People are really fired up, there's a political rally for somebody almost every day, and you can't turn on the tv without being bombarded by ads.

My parents, who live in Chicago, haven't seen any ads at all.

Florida is getting completely innundated with political ads. I think I can recite most of them word for word. I can't even keep up with the candidates that come through here. There is someone here literally every day. Only person I've seen speak so far is Michael Moore.

We actually kind-of had a nice break from all the ads for a month os so there. All we had to deal with was like 4 hurricanes. Exchange blow-hards for blow-hards.

(btw- I just got back from voting! Woo-hoo! ...FL has early voting this year b/c of last time)

Thankfully, our remote control has a mute button. That makes things a little more bearable. I can't wait for the whole thing to be over.

how strange....the husband and I don't watch television so we get the news & debates online or via radio.

The political ads have all the really conservative christians stomping for Bush.

i can't remember an election where people got sooo angry when they found out you were a liberal.

If Bush or Kerry call my house one more time with a pre-recorded mesage, I swear to fucking God I'm moving to Canada.

it's the phone calls from both parties that are getting on my nerves

yeah... those phone calls are annoying.. . do those even work? at all?
i mean.... at least for me... a phone call is NOT gonna sway my opinion.
ESPECIALLY if its pre recorded... get a human to call me, and maybe we'll talk.

Well, since I'm registered as Republican and used to belong to the Christian Coalition, you can just imagine the political junk mail Im getting.

It seems like almost every day or every other day I get a Kerry hit piece from the Bush campaign!

I don't watch much TV so miss the commercials, but waiting while I had the car in the shop I watched the news on TV in the waiting room and it was just filled w. political ads...seems more from Kerry than Bush, tho they did have that wolf ad (nice scenery).

Kerry did have one nice ad..this sort of "morning in America" type of ad. Really upbeat...sort of on the theme of what America could be..a better America...

The republican hit I last heard was that voting democrat would mean voting against religious freedom. That's just a load of MAH-NOOORRR!!!

I got into a conversation with a veteran of WWII and he said that he has not seen an adminisration change hands (in his lifetime) while in the midst of war. I thought that was pretty impressive give that fact that he was 80-something.

I have a fundamentalist boss who truly believes that Bush is on a mission from God and that Kerry attacks the troops. We actually get along very well, but while he is praying for my obviously damned soul….I wonder how someone so smart can be equally so ignorant.

I’ve also got a Canadian friend in Boston who can’t comprehend what is going on. (I sent her the pictures of MC 42 ft. Jesus)…we were @ a dog show in Cleveland last summer – she asked how one part of the state can be so different from the other….didn’t know how to answer.

That's strange. I haven't received a single phone call from party supporters.

It might be because we're on the DO NOT CALL LIST.

I'd suggest it.

I get all kinds of phone calls, mailers, etc..... thing is, I've already voted! Florida is one of like 3 states that has "Early Voting" this year. I did it today. Dog! I'm glad that's over with. now all I have to do is wait for the rest of the country to agree with me!

christian, my dear, I would guess it has more to do with being an unregistered 21-yr-old.

which reminds me, do you still need help figuring out ways to volunteer these next few days? ;)

ACTUALLY...I just got a call today. I am happy to say that I am, in fact, registered. There was some great confusion. I checked several sources, all of which said I wasn't registered. However, I guess it was under the address I had back in 2000. They said I could go to the polls, and inform them of my change-of-address there.

:o

Greatest news to me...and a relief.

wow, that's great news!!! except I'm not so sure of that advice you got: if you're registered at your old address yet go to the polling site for your current precinct, they may end up giving you a provisional ballot instead. although this isn't the end of the world, it'd be preferable to use a machine. perhaps you could instead drive to your old polling place that day? couldn't be too far, right? there in cincinnati?

your best bet may be to contact the hamilton county board of elections to clear that up.

Yeah, I was going to call them today actually, since I have an off-day. Then I will be sure where to go.

Whatever the case may be, I'll be glad to vote.

I just got home late and picked up the mail and saw that it was a big stack of stuff so was kinda excited to browse through a bunch of mail. I get in my house and see that 13 of 15 pieces of mail are political flyers of some sort and my excitemtement immediately vanished and was replaced by pure hatred at the McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Reform Bill for accomplishing absolutely nothing:mad:

No phone calls from Kerry or Bush but my husband is a teamster so we got one from Jim Hoffa encourging us to vote for Kerry. That was kinda creepy.

We have registered with Do Not Call, too, but we can still get political calls. I may be mistaken, but I think they're exempt.

I think the pollsters need to teach their volunteers how to actually make calls. I was coaching the poor girl who was supposed to be questioning ME!

To answer the original question...

I feel like the host of a party where the guests have overstayed their welcome.

I am so envious of the 3 electorate states that said goodbye to this nonsense in September.

What I hate most is those stupid Voter Guides, "Take this to the polls with you".. I got one from the California Police Association, Gubernor Aaanold, and just recently, President Clinton..

I'm in Chicago as well, and have just started seeing some Bush ads over the past 2-3 days. Haven't seen a single Kerry ad though since the primary.

W. must be slipping.

The only good part about being in a swing state is that your vote actually matters. I feel badly for our Kentucky neighbors who will vote for Kerry but ultimately know that their state is going to W.

Silo, you have no idea how disheartening it is.

Again I say- Lone marshmallow in a sea of fudge!!!!

Actually, the DO NOT CALL LIST does not apply to political parties/campaigns. Haha, gotta hand it to them blood sucking politicians . . . why would they deny theirselves the chance to call and annoy the hell out of you?!

*sigh*

It's called the Appalachian migration. It's in the history books. Happened around 1930s to 50s. Religion is about the only thing that sustained Appalachians before the migration, as life on the farm was HARD, HARD, HARD....

The Appalachian migration has also led to a slew of shirtless 30-year-old men riding children's BMX bicycles around town to sling meth.
