they are the New Celebrity. when the national threat level doesn't have quite the right hue of red to it, when Kobe Bryant's accuser has nothing to be apologized to about, when Michael Jackson is looking more like just a weirdo and less like a true criminal, when Marlon Brando and Ray Charles and Ronald Reagan are STILL dead, thank your lucky stars you have Average Joe characters who act shifty when their wives disappear. and in turn, accept their thanks as our society continues to fuel their pathos and sends them the message that- it's okay, some of us are on your side!

"We believe that Mark Hacking is responsible for her disappearance and her death," Salt Lake City Police Chief Rick Dinse said at a Monday news conference.

Mark Hacking is in the Salt Lake County jail, after he was released from a psychiatric hospital, Dinse said.

Lori Hacking, 27, has been missing since July 19, when her husband told authorities that she failed to return from an early morning jog. Her body has not been found, Dinse said.

The search for her body is likely to resume on Wednesday night at a landfill, Dinse said.

The announcement came after the family of Lori Hacking said over the weekend that her husband had provided information that made the search for the pregnant woman unnecessary. (Full story)

Until Monday's news conference, police had labeled Mark Hacking "the primary person of interest" in the case -- and said they had no others.

A spokesman for the Salt Lake City Police Department said a Hacking family member had provided police with "additional, substantive information," which he did not characterize.

Police called off their search of the landfill Thursday night after three days of sifting through about 7,500 tons of garbage.

Hacking, 28, was taken to a psychiatric ward the day after he reported his wife missing, after he was seen running around at night naked in sandals outside a motel where he'd taken a room.

Investigators focused on Hacking after learning he was at a store buying a new mattress just before reporting his wife missing. Investigators have refused to confirm reports that they found a mattress in a nearby trash bin.

Father: Hacking confessed to brothers
Search continues for missing wife

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (AP) -- Mark Hacking confessed to two older brothers that he killed his wife as she slept and then put the body in a trash bin, their father said Thursday.

Hacking, confronted with evidence he had something to do with his wife's disappearance, and overwhelmed by the volunteer effort to find her, made the confession when his brothers Scott and Lance visited him at a psychiatric ward July 24, the father, Douglas Hacking, said.

"He decided the time was right -- he had better let authorities know what happened," Douglas Hacking said. The details of the confession were disclosed Thursday in an interview of Scott Hacking in The Salt Lake Tribune.

Scott Hacking told the newspaper Wednesday that after Mark confessed, "My brother and I sat and hugged him for about an hour, and then we went home."

"I've never seen him (Scott) hurting so much as that night, struggling with having to make that decision," said Douglas Hacking. "When it was all done, he said, 'I never felt as relieved or miserable at the same time.' It's a terrible dilemma for him to be in."

He said he believed Mark Hacking had a psychological breakdown because his wife apparently learned of his lie about having been accepted to medical school. Both Scott and Douglas are physicians, and the father has said Mark probably felt pressure by the achievements of his relatives.

Mark Hacking, 28, called police July 19 and said his wife had failed to show up for work after going for an early morning jog. He was arrested Monday on suspicion of murder as he was about to be released from the psychiatric ward where he'd been since being found naked outside a hotel July 20.

Police believe that three days before she vanished, Lori Hacking discovered that her husband had not been enrolled in a North Carolina medical school where the couple was packing to move. It also was discovered that he had lied about graduating from the University of Utah.
