Is Tokyo Pop the one where the main character and "hero" is a rapist?

It's not current, but I loved Ah! My Goddess! (Yes, I actually did read the Manga before I saw the series.) Kimiguri Orange Road is also good, though I've only read a bit.

Alright. I just have to ask this question: Why do people love this stuff?

I finally picked up one these "books" and read it. It was Tokoyo Pop. It was garbage in my estimation.

1. the writing was piss poor. horrific character development, simplistic overwraught dialogue. just awful stuff. unimaginative plots bascially stolen from other works.

2. the pictures baffle me. blue eyes and blond hair looking NOTHING like the Japanese. the breasts are HUGE while the bodies are pre-pubescent. Now, US comics arent great either but at least you see muscles and form in the female characters. Either the Japanese are purposely marketing to try to sell to the West which is gross, or somebody has a really fucked up idea of what women are....which brings me to my third point.

3. the Japanese have even a worse history of portrayal of women than the US does. Either you're a slut or a madonna (after childbirth) and there is no in-between. Manga seems to stem from these stereotypes.

its pretty damn scary to see young people flock to this knowing what it portrays, and the teen manga isnt any better.

someone explain this to me please? why is this so popular?

Like sushi, it's an acquired taste. Anyway, no one is suggesting they're works of literary genius. I mean, why do people like soap operas??

TRANSLATES TO:

If you wish to read the roots of manga may I suggest anything by Tezuka Osama.

If you wish to read something that is both literate, and VERY creative check out "Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind" by Hayao Miyazaki. It has a female HERO! The manga was also made into a film, but read the 4 books first, you will LOVE it!

What did you read, Classic, i"m interested. Like he said before, Tokyopop is just the company...

I think i could recommend a few that you might like... though i have no basis for my judgement....

Tsubasa/XXXHolic are both exellent, they are put out by Del Rey manga. Actually, just check anything out by CLAMP, and you may find yourself in another world.

The thing with Manga is that it reaches a much broader audience than what the American standard of comics does. I mean, there's a comic out RIGHT NOW about a tennis star (Prince of Tennis) and a upcoming pop star who fell in love with a writer (Gravitation), as well as your basic ninja tales and giant robots.

I hope that answered your question better than the idea of porn....
