Read "Songbook" by Nick Hornby. It was released in the US last fall, and it's a collection of essays written about his favorite songs. Any music fan should read this. Let me know what you think.

I'm sorry, I thought this was about Bruce Hornsby and the Range.

I own it - I even own the one with the CD in it, but I just haven't gotten around to reading it or listening to it yet. I am slow that way.

I didn't know there was a copy with a cd. What is on the cd? The songs that he writes about? I'm so jealous!

This is a really fun book, and the hardback with the cd is the one you want to keep yoru eye out for. I so enjoy reading a good writer who is passionate about music, and Hornby captures that better than almost everyone I've read.
When I was lucky enough to be invited to Vicious' and Ksensa's house-party the other week, I was heartened to see Songbook sitting there on a shelf.
If any of you read the Believer lit magazine, Hornby writes a pretty good column each month called "What I'm reading".

First...thanks for the hook up on this....
Secondly, how the hell did i not know about this?
I just picked up my first copy and I am thoroughly enjoying the reading so far. i will probably subscribe soon...the $8 cover price is not bad, but, of course, subscription is cheaper.

the hardcover edition of songbook, packaged with the cd, is out of print, as far as i know. i found it on the mcsweeney's website, but i'm not sure if it's still available. i bought it last winter.
i still haven't read the whole thing. what is WRONG with me? i'll have to make that the next book i read. yes.

I got this last Xmas and read it immediately.
I'll probably re-read it soon too.
It's a really interesting read for us music-nuts. And, I can completely relate to some of the things he talks about, esp. the bit about how songs trigger memories and become attached to different things over the course of your life if you've listened to them long enough.
I'd write more, but like I said, it's been awhile and I need to read it again.
But, highly recommended!! :)
