So I'm thinking about subscribing to a music mag now that I feel like I need to make an effort to keep up with the new music news. What do you guys recommend? I'm looking at Rolling Stone, Spin, Magnet, CMJ,...other?

What's best for this stuff?

No Depression is an alt-rock mag.
Personally I'd go with CMJ.
I like picking up Q on the racks. Dunno about subscribing - overseas subscription can get $$$

Long ago I read AP - just bought the new one - crap. I got Hammer too - death metal stuff - not bad - but a bit hard core. Going to Shake It this weekend - going to ask them...where is Barb when you need her???

I've got a subscription to Paste. It's pretty good....comes with a CD sampler in every issue

I would definitely take Magnet or CMJ over Rolling Stone or Spin, hands down... Magnet's the best of the lot, in my opinion... much less mainstream, they seem to dig deeper for good music... and lots of good interviews/reviews...

Another Brit music mag thats pretty good is Mojo. Sort of like a "better" Rolling Stone. I occassionally pic it up at the newstand, but its $$$, so not that often.

thanks guys. It's good to know this stuff. I decided that if I was ever without a job, I'd get subscriptions to all of the above and just sit around and read them all week long.

man...what a life that would be! well, except for the no-income-thing.

Sigh, there's nothing better than sitting down to a brand new music mag, especially if there's a sampler CD with it to listen to while you're reading... god, I'm such a music geek...

As a subscriber to CMJ since issue 1, I would recomend holding off on their subscription. Don't get me wrong, they're a great mag. But their kinda in a transitional state. They've missed months in the past or combined 2 months (they do call it CMJ Monthly) I just got the April issue and gave them a call. A recording said that issues January - March will be coming. Also in the last issue, there were only like 12 or so tracks on the CD. They usually have 19 or 20. But really it is a good mag, serious. So hold off for a bit and we'll give you the go ahaed when all is clear.
