this is a bad thing how? should addictive drugs be legal? should we all adopt "objective" opinions on pornogrophy so that someday we become so desensitized to it that we don't cover children's eyes when they see public blowjobs on the beach, complete with a hat for donations?

to each his own, yes. but personally, I'm all for strict regulations on "plain old vanilla sex" porn and outright eradication of anything beyond that. it's poisonous and addictive. oh, like heroin. and, smoker's admittance, like tobacco. and it's really a shame that's not illegal.

I am glad that we have already erradicated our more serious problems and can now focus all our energy on getting rid of that dirty, dirty porn.

should addictive drugs be legal? Some are.
should we all adopt "objective" opinions on pornogrophy...god forbid! Objectivity in government regulation! How novel!
...so that someday we become so desensitized to it that we don't cover children's eyes when they see public blowjobs on the beach, complete with a hat for donations? ...and gay marriage will allow underage midgets to marry exotic animals stolen from the circus. Blah blah blah. Conjecture at best and completely uninformed blathering at worst (well...I guess I could be worse than that).
to each his own, yes.Good call
but personally, I'm all for strict regulations on "plain old vanilla sex" porn and outright eradication of anything beyond that. How's that "to each his own"?
it's poisonous and addictive. oh, like heroin. and, smoker's admittance, like tobacco. No it's not. There may be mental/emotional similarities, but you don't (can't?) honestly believe that a chemical that causes otherwise nonexistant physical symptom(s) that can lead to death is the same as something that can, at worst, lead to behavioral problems that can be solved with therapy. Right?

I would like to personally endorse IPFS's post.

I guess this makes my computer some sort of Waco-like compound.

What the world needs now, is porn, sweet porn.

Anyone who says otherwise belongs in the north side of Utah. And I mean that in the worst way.

I'll second that endorsement!

The problem with "strict regulations on 'plain old vanilla sex' porn and outright eradication of anything beyond that" is that any such regulations and restrictions will be wildly imprecise, because it's impossible to pin down what constitutes pornography. People have tried. We'd end up banning things that are neither pornography nor obscene.

As for comparing it to heroin or tobacco, nice try. I think IPFS has rebutted that very well. Describing pornography as an addiction is imprecise in my mind. The same kind of "addiction" that people can develop to pornography they can also develop for the internet, or for television. I doubt anyone here would even attempt to justify a ban on web-surfing because of it's addictive nature. To me, it seems to be really more of a compulsion than an addiction, but that's not my area*.

I don't know. I sold my copy of Robert's Rules of Order on eBay to cover the enormous pay-per-view porn tab I racked up the last time I stayed at a hotel.

I hear you. I don't have any pornography per se laying around, but there are a couple of Victoria's Secret catalogs on the coffee table. Those might be construed as "pornography-related program activities."

Oh well. Six months from now when they're pulling me out of a foxhole, bearded and flea-infested, Saddam Hussein-style, you can all say you knew me when.

Im not gonna argue your freedom of speech claim but for all those who think it's not addictive or has no chemically-imbalancing qualities I have just two words:

Ted Bundy

It does not introduce foreign chemicals to the body.

The power that those naturally occuring chemicals have on your body is intentional. The hormones and stimulus were written by God to be that way.

There is more incentive to be addicted to sex than other stimulus that does not release the naturally occuring "drug" that was written by God to be that good. However, b/c it is a naturally occuring stimulus any developed addiction is purely psychological or artificial.

Other bodily functions release small doses of the same chemical. Pissing, crapping, and even some foods. When subjects are given/do those items I'm sure it doesn't register to them they are "feeding their addiction". That is b/c they are addicted to something other than the chemical release.

Two things.

First, Due, I think I've mentioned this to you before: there is no God.

Second, this post (http://volokh.com/2004_04_04_volokh_archive.html#108139970585761138) has some interesting analysis of the porn crackdown.

Yikes. I feel for ya, man. I was actually hoping no one could relate to such a place.

I think we ought to all chip in and buy you some brew! You know, to help cope. :D
