"Early Morning.. April 4th. Shot rings out in the Memphis Sky.. FREE AT LAST.. They took your life, but they could not take your pride.. In the Name of Love.. One Man in the Name of Love" -- U2, from "Pride: In the Name of Love"
"Dream on white boy, dream on black girl.. Will wake up to a brand new day.. to find your dreams have washed away" -- INXS from "Original Sin"..

We've tied the Civil Rights movement to MLKjr's torso & buried it along with him. How did this happen? Since his death the movement has been so closely associated with him that it's almost as if we're all waiting for the next incarnation of MLKjr before we make the next step.
Was he successful?
Yes indeed he was. He helped organize others to bring about change. It wasn't as complete or effective as he had dreamed, but it was a great amount of advancement in relatively short period. No one, however, has been able to pick up the mantle since because we're all waiting for him to return in some form.
Stop holding your breath, he's dead, the movement associated with him is dead. Find a new way & prove to him that the outrage at injustice isn't dead, but is evolving instead of stagnating & waiting.
I give MLKjr an A+ for his time. If he was around today (or was reincarnated in a new person) I'd give him a C+, maybe a B-.

wow, the 40 year anniversary. there's really never been anything like it since---such a feeling of deflation, despair, mistrust. race riots in the cities. and then kennedy a few months later. something was definitely shattered.
so it took 40 years to get to where we are with obama. should we be expect to be farther along? dunno.

Fuck you very much J Edgar Hoover. I believe that the sixties could of brought in far greater change if certain assholes weren't in power.

if you ever go to memphis, the lorraine motel is a must see. it epitomizes a certain loneliness that already drifts throughout the city. years ago they had an incredible monument there; a green laser, a ray of light, that came from the adjacent building (where james earl ray was) to the door of mlk's room and up 90 degrees into the sky. it was fascinating but eventually it went away....some thought it too garish, especially the lorraine's famed protester jacqueline smith (http://www.fulfillthedream.net/pages/20years.html) who i spoke to about it at length one night. she has her own opinions about the civil rights museum the lorraine has become but i could see her point. she has been sitting across the street for twenty years.
