ok, i really don't want to sound lame, but i really want to start reading the sandman comics, but i'm afraid my parents will be pisssed, ( i'm only 14) are they really "objectionable" or just a little?

wow, that one is wide open. it depends on your parents. people could be offended for sex, violence, religion, what have you. i suggest getting one of the volumes out of the library and testing the waters. if you want to run it by your parents cool. if not...
awesome awesome stuff. i personally think you are old enuff.
enjoy
check out neilgaiman.com. there are message boards there that this might have been discussed on.

I think the issue with the diner is *cough* somewhat questionable.

Sandman should be fine....just don't break out Preacher on them, that could lead to some $#!%

Oh yeah! That's right, I forgot about that! Ew.
How about reading "Brief Lives?" That one was my favorite and if I can remember correctly (ha!) it is less, uh, disturbing than the other volumes.

i'm not saying s/he shouldn't read Preacher, just don't let the parentals catch on unless they are really cool about dissing religion and the such

i'm gonna try out all gaiman's books on the 'rents before the comics. i read coraline and stardust and just started neverwhere.
btw, how are they objectionable. language and violence in no big deal, but lots of sex would be a no.

I'd be one proud papa to have a child wanting to read Sandman.
The Cincinnati Public Library has many graphic novels that you can borrow. I am not certain if Sandman is one of them.

look it up, better yet LISTEN TO FZ!

Off topic, but what do I care? First of all Neverwhere is the bombdiggitydeliciousness. Second of all, I'm worried about the Preacher movie (should it ever actually get made). I mean, do you honestly think they would end it correctly in a major motion picture???!?!!!?!
Somethin' tells me the general public ain't down with killin' god.

Stardust was a pretty interesting book. I liked the graphic details of the rotting unicorn. Now everytime I see roadkill, I think of that.

i looked on amazon, but the cheapest is like 12 bucks, which mean 17 or 18 with shipping, so that sucks.

for that you might as well buy new. try going to your local comic shop. you could pick up a couple of the later issues (the series ended at 75) for a fiver. you'd get a taste at least.

this is true. my dad frequents a few comic shops, so thats always an option

your dad digs comics?! how cool is that.
i got my dad to read 'the day i swapped my dad...' to my little girl (4.5). it was hilarious seeing him react to gaiman's prose. i don't think that man has ever read a bit of fiction.

how cute! when she gets a little older, coraline is really good, and just scary enough for the little ones. plus, you get dave mckean illustrations. my dad has lots of old xmen and reads anything frank miller does, especially sin city.

There are three locations around Cincinnati and the often have good deals on used comics/TPBs. Don't try selling books to them!
You will make more money at a yard sale.
I just checked The Cincinnati Library database, and they DO have several Sandman TPBs to borrow. They will transfer books to your local library branch for you to pick up.
If all else fails, you can spend a day at Barnes & Noble...reading for free. I do not agree with this practice, yet I see many people doing it. Kind of like smoking...just not as stinky. ;)

Holy shit, I wish I'd known this. I checked the Eastgate branch o the library several times for TPBs and the only things worth reading there were some Tin Tin books. I'll have to remember this from now on. Though I'm in KY now, and don't know how their library system works. Guess I'd better find out.

Or if you live near Dayton, the library has all the Sandman you could ever want. They have a surprisingly large graphic novel selection, mostly Neil Gaiman and Alan Moore stuff (and anime). And they have like 20 or so branches throughout the Miami Valley so you can just request to pick them up at the nearest branch, which is great because the downtown Dayton branch smells like pee.

Or at least the Cincinnati Library hopes so. In the past year I have seen the number of TPBs grow. My one compaint is that it's Marvel-centric. This may by due to the once mighty Marvel's monsterous media presence.

the cleveland heights libraries are hooked to the cleveland libraries which are linked to numerous northcoast libraries. they have tpb's and individual comics galore that can be transferred to your local branch.
