View Full Version : British Sea Power's Classic . . .

The Decline of British Sea Power is one deck album. I really haven'y heard such a complete album in some time. I've always been one who prefers slightly more "complicated" musical structure and I think thats exactly what BSP adds to this whole garage rock revival notion. Not to mention that you get a pretty cool collection of songs ranging from the punk rock stylings of "Remember Me" to the more epic 15 minute "lately", all while carrying a distinctly conceptual flavor full of historical and litterary allusion. I kind of hear an early joy division thing going on, though i don't completely miss people's Echo and the Bunnymen analogies. Worth picking up, especially for all you anglophiles running around out there.

deck?

sorry I'm still stuck in the "sick" era of hipster slang.

My first exposure to BSP was live, when they opened for the Libertines last summer. Wow! They smoked. I picked up the album after that and thought it was midtown. But it's been a real grower and I'm definitely digging it.

The band came back in December as headliners and put on another phenomenal show. They really are a fantastic live act. They are coming back to the states in March. Cleveland looks like the only Ohio gig.

Good stuff...they bounce around with a lot of different styles on record...the singer sort of reminds me of Frank Black where he alternates between screaming and singing.

Perusing their website, I'm a bit jealous of the shows you've got coming up there.

The Stills
The Unicorns
Urge Overkill
Hank III
Mr. T Experience

Edited to return to the subject at hand -- I couldn't recommend a live show more. Put aside the antics, the avian props and the foliage -- musically, they just kick ass live. The guitars that are often subdued on the album come through loud and clear, the vocals are stronger, and the rhythm section slays. The lead guitarist is a hoot to watch, as he never changes expression. I like the album a lot, but they are even better live.

the scene "owed" us after a pretty dismal december and january show wise. The grog also has the stills, ok go, walkmen, french kicks, autumn defense, and he dreadful yawns coming . . .

There are a couple of other slick shows at the beachland (http://www.beachlandballroom.com) as well. I'm taking my mommy to see rickie lee jones there monday night.
