I got Ghosts of the great Highway for x-mas and absolutely love this album. If you dig the RHPs then then you'll be all over this as its not a huge departure. Either way, its a strong folk rock record from start to finish and well worth its relatively cheap price.

Anyone, by chance, able to track down a set of lyrics for Ghosts? I can't even find a website for the band . . . Thanks

Monkey- As long as you dig the RHPs then you will most certainly not be dissapointed. Even if you don't know what RHP stands for and just dig a languid (though not mopey) paced, nostalgia and "memories of my more innocent youth" infested album sung by a guy who sounds equal parts chris izaak and neil young, you will be happy. I would say that this album sounds more like Crazy Horse then past Kozelek projects and definatley more like songs for a blue guitar over his earlier, northern exposure years, stuff. A couple of the songs use a string trio and dual drum sets that make a beatufuly complex, yet amazingly simple sound. I know thats rather diffficult to picture, but it'll make perfect sense with one listen . . . one of the best of the year.

This is one of those cd's that I buy for one song. I think "Carry me Ohio" (I think that's the one on 97x) is a great tune, but from the sounds of that song, I'm sure the rest of the cd is good. I'm not familiar with the RHP, though.

RHP is just a silly acronym for the Red House Painters, wich was Mat Kozelek's old band. Tough saying old band is a bit of misnomer. They formed in the late eightes and put a couple of records, but Kozelek eventually went solo with the slighlty more rock album Songs for a Blue Guitar (my personal RHP favorite and a top ten all timer for me) inwhich he played allmost all the instruments (following the lead of the previous album Ocean Beach wich is only mostly solo). However, it was released under the RHP moniker in hopes that would help with the marketing. The last true RHP album, band intact, was recorded in the mid nineties but not released (randomly on sub pop) until '01 and was titled Old Ramon and is prety slick in its own regards. Older RHP stuff is not nearly as polished and can be quite randomly quirky (as in dramatic readings of KISS songs and a John Denver tribute album). Anyhow, If you enjoy the Sun Kill Moon album, I would recomend Songs for A Blue Guitar.

As a ramdom site note, Kozelek has done some random acting and was in Almost Famous and was the Radio DJ in Northern Exposure (or so i'm told).

kozelek, i read somewhere, did play a minor role in almost famous, though did not play the dj in northern exposure. that is john corbett.

i read a fascinating article once referencing mark kozelek's departure from ohio (akron area, if my memory serves me right) to the west coast for musical reasons. kinda "escaped", but yet continues to link himself back to the midwest, ala "carry me ohio"
