LAFAYETTE, Louisiana (AP) -- A 7-year-old boy was scolded and forced to write "I will never use the word 'gay' in school again" after he told a classmate about his lesbian mother, the American Civil Liberties Union alleged Monday.
Second-grader Marcus McLaurin was waiting for recess November 11 at Ernest Gaullet Elementary School when a classmate asked about Marcus' mother and father, the ACLU said in a complaint.
Marcus responded he had two mothers because his mother is gay. When the other child asked for explanation, Marcus told him: "Gay is when a girl likes another girl," according to the complaint.
A teacher who heard the remark scolded Marcus, telling him "gay" was a "bad word" and sending him to the principal's office. The following week, Marcus had to come to school early and repeatedly write: "I will never use the word 'gay' in school again."
A phone message left for Lafayette Parish schools superintendent James Easton was not immediately returned.
The ACLU is demanding the case be removed from Marcus' file and that the school apologize to the boy and his mother, Sharon Huff.
"I was concerned when the assistant principal called and told me my son had said a word so bad that he didn't want to repeat it over the phone," Huff said. "But that was nothing compared to the shock I felt when my little boy came home and told me that his teacher had told him his family is a dirty word."

i'd bet that teacher likes to strap one on and give her house full of cats a good rogering when she gets home to that empty, lonely, knicknack filled home.....
stupid people should not be allowed to breed......or teach.....
some of the nuns in my grade school would have been ecstatic to hear that kind of news! "Really Johnny? Well, tell your mother that Sister Ann and I expect her at the next PTA meeting! And tell her to wear something frilly!"

how many ppl run into homophobes who claim they aren't homophobes at work?
I mean, i got this guy who says he won't watch any Tom Hanks movies because he decided to take the lead role in "Philidelphia". I asked him if he's a homophobe and he said "No, I just believe their lifestyle is evil."
but to him, being condescending, alienating, and excluding, isn't homophobia, it's something else.

NOT WATCHING TOM HANKS MOVIES!!! That's just ANTI-AMERICAN!! "Big", "Forrest Gump","The Green Mile",.etc.. Did you dare tell him about Hank's role on "Bosom Buddies" where he cross-dressed in the late 1970's??..
but I too work with someone like this, actually my main store manager is a born-again Christian. She's tolerant of other people in the workplace (we had some pretty flaming dudes work there and our last 2 District Managers have been "Sound of Music" loving, card-carrying members of the Barbara Fan Club).. Yet, she believes that homosexuality is a SIN and that gay people will go to HELL!!! She refused to watch the show "E/R" after one of the women on the show came out (hell.. I never watched the show), and for the longest time refused to watch Scott Wolff movies because of his role in the movie "Go"..
Which actually boycotting a few movies and actors from your personal collection, is just exercising your freedom of choice and isn't exactly homophobic.. However, the line becomes crossed when laws are created that prevent gay people from having civil rights, being able to marry, adopt children, etc... The fact that they put so much time and energy into spreading such vile hatred towards a group of people because they disagree with their lifestyle is sad..
There is one man that I can say that I truly HATE.. (And no, it's Not George W Bush..), It's the Reverand Fred Phelps from Kansas.. Some backwoods, oakie, who is obsessed with Gay People.. So obsessed that he shows up at gay sponsored events and holds up signs saying "God Hates Fags" and goes to the funerals for victims of AIDS saying that the "(Dead individual) is GOING TO HELL".. This bastard even capped on Mr. Rogers earlier this year after he passed away saying that Mr. Rogers helped bring up a generation of Queer lovers...

Why would they not see these movies or buy these products? Are they afraid of endorsing their behavior? I mean, they could buy the product and send in a letter saying "I don't endorse your lifestyle choice", but they don't.
It's about power. Fear of these ppl becoming commonplace, accepted, or whatever. This knucklehead is quite inconsistent/w his decisions too, b/c he still watches Survivor.

Well, technically "homophobia" would imply some kind of fear, as if you could 'catch' it or possibly be molested because you're just so good looking. Therefore, it's not necessarily homophobia if a person says being gay is evil... it could just be good old-fashioned ignorance.
I like when people say, "I don't condemn the person, i condemn the behavior." So then it is okay to be gay, as long as you don't act gay.
BTW - cool sig Due.

Maybe the teacher misunderstood and thought the kid was using it like "oh, that book is so gay" or whatever. You know how it's used as a negative adjective these days. It's thrown around the Jr high like you wouldn't believe. I gave some kid detetion for repeatedly using it the other week.
I actually find it really funny because my sister and our best pal and I used it like that when we were in high school, before moving on to "sexy" instead....Yeah, we thought we were awesome.

I got in trouble twice in school for language.
The first time I was in 7th grade (I think) and pretty young for my age. I used to play a lot of pretend basketball with paper wads and such. My friend and I would make a basket and say "Doosh" or "Whoosh". I guess the similarity in sound to the word "douche" was too much for the 12 year old girls who were just learning about such things themselves.
The second time was in 9th grade (I think) when a friend of mine started saying "Jesus, Mary and Joseph" as an exclamation of surprise. I picked up on it and started using it occassionally. A teacher called me aside and scolded me for it. I told my friend, who went to the same school but wasn't in any of my classes and he had started saying it because he had a teacher who used that exclamation. It was pretty funny.
