Woman knocked unconscious by trampling shoppers

ORANGE CITY, Florida (AP) -- A mob of shoppers rushing for a sale on DVD players trampled the first woman in line and knocked her unconscious as they scrambled for the shelves at a Wal-Mart Supercenter.

Patricia VanLester had her eye on a $29 DVD player, but when the siren blared at 6 a.m. Friday announcing the start to the post-Thanksgiving sale, the 41-year-old was knocked to the ground by the frenzy of shoppers behind her.

"She got pushed down, and they walked over her like a herd of elephants," said VanLester's sister, Linda Ellzey. "I told them, 'Stop stepping on my sister! She's on the ground!"'

Ellzey said some shoppers tried to help VanLester, and one employee helped Ellzey reach her sister, but most people just continued their rush for deals.

"All they cared about was a stupid DVD player," she said Saturday.

Paramedics called to the store found VanLester unconscious on top of a DVD player, surrounded by shoppers seemingly oblivious to her, said Mark O'Keefe, a spokesman for EVAC Ambulance.

She was flown to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, where doctors told the family VanLester had a seizure after she was knocked down and would likely remain hospitalized through the weekend, Ellzey said. Hospital officials said Saturday they did not have any information on her condition.

"She's all black and blue," Ellzey said. "Patty doesn't remember anything. She still can't believe it all happened."

Ellzey said Wal-Mart officials called later Friday to ask about her sister, and the store apologized and offered to put a DVD player on hold for her.

Wal-Mart Stores spokeswoman Karen Burk said she had never heard of a such a melee during a sale.

"We are very disappointed this happened," Burk said. "We want her to come back as a shopper."

i could get her $100,000 plus the DVD player. she just hit the jackpot.....it's a great "security" claim against Wal-Mart.

Well, the ol' bag got in my way. There's no time to dawdle around. It's the day after Thanksgiving! It's war!

why is everyone so tense this year? did anyone see the footage at a Toys R' Us where a Springer-style altercation took place? and these insane women lined up for hundreds of feet, behind shopping carts, waiting since 5 am. I don't remember hearing about shit like this any other year.

is it that the sales are soooo sensational this year?

We were cracking up at the news footage of the idiots who spent the night sitting in line outside of Toys R Us before the after Thanksgiving sale. I mean, come on people...there's ice falling out of the sky! We sat drinking our hot toddy's, went to sleep in our nice comfortable bed, woke up and had a nice breakfast and then meandered over to Toys R Us around 9. It wasn't that crowded and we got what we needed.

btw...revise my estimate of what i could get her up to over a million. think how awesome it would play to the jury that Wal-mart made 1.57 billion dollars on that 1 day, yet they couldn't spend $5/hour on a security guard to protect what was clearly a dangersous crowd, or put in place security measures to assure that a mob scene didn't ensue.

god damn, sometimes the best cases just write their own scripts!

I'm thinkin' you should contact her. I know your license to practice law probably doesn't extend to Florida, but hey, it can't hurt. Maybe you set her up with a FL lawyer and collect a finder's fee for such an open and shut case?

Just a thought.

*Note: If you go through with the idea, I'd like a finder's fee for mentioning it :)

I'd like a finder's fee for finding out that you mentioned it.

Can't give you a finders fee, but a nice trip to Vegas could be in order. :)

and if you think that 400 firms haven't already staked out the hospital with their contracts in hand, you're sadly mistaken. there's a longer line for that than there was to get into Wal-mart, and the lawyers won't stop to help each other up!
