an excerpt...
The purpose of the search was not disclosed.
The singer who had international hits with the albums "Thriller" (1982), "Bad" (1987) and "Dangerous" (1991), saw his career begin to collapse in 1993 amid allegations he molested a boy. Jackson maintained his innocence, and charges were never filed. He reportedly paid a multimillion-dollar settlement.
Jackson is also connected to Hollywood private eye Anthony Pellicano, who has begun serving federal prison time for possessing illegal explosives, and is being investigated about whether he secretly taped conversations of celebrities and their lawyers.
Pellicano, 59, reportedly worked for Jackson while the singer was under investigation for child molestation in the early 1990s.
As the raid was under way, Court TV reported that the warrant was tied to allegations brought by a 12-year-old boy. That could not immediately be confirmed by The Associated Press.

Police poised to arrest Jackson
MSNBC News Services
Santa Barbara County (Calif.) authorities have issued a warrant for Michael Jackson's arrest, according to the district attorney in the case.
Ventre: Jackson still doesn't get it
SANTA BARBARA COUNTY District Attorney Tom Sneddon told Court TV that an arrest warrant has been issued for Jackson under California penal code 288, a child molestation charge. Sneddon said they were ready to arrest Jackson and that there were multiple violations of the penal code.
KVBC-TV in Las Vegas earlier had reported that the Las Vegas police confirm that there is an arrest warrant. Jackson is in Las Vegas to work on a new video. He was in Las Vegas on Tuesday when the search of his ranch took place.
As many as 70 law enforcement officials served a search warrant at Jackson's ranch and searched for evidence through the night as part of an ongoing criminal investigation, Sgt. Chris Pappas said.
The Santa Barbara News-Press reported in Wednesday's editions that a county source confirmed the search stemmed from a child molestation allegation.
Court TV, citing unidentified sources, reported that the allegations were brought by a 12- or 13-year-old boy. And the television program "Celebrity Justice" said Tuesday that a therapist reported disclosures by a boy who spent time at Neverland and began therapy several months ago.
The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department would not elaborate on the purpose of Tuesday's search. The district attorney and sheriff planned to provide more details at a press conference Wednesday at 2 p.m. ET.
Jackson, who reportedly was in Las Vegas when the search warrant was served, denounced media coverage in a statement released to The Associated Press by spokesman Stuart Backerman.
"I've seen lawyers who don't represent me and spokespeople who do not know me speaking for me. These characters always seem to surface with dreadful allegations just as another project, an album, a video is being released," the Jackson statement said, referring to Tuesday's release of a greatest hits album, "Number Ones."
Backerman refused to comment on any allegations and said neither he nor Jackson knew the details of the investigation.
PREVIOUS ALLEGATIONS
The 45-year-old singing superstar faced a child molestation investigation in 1993 in a case that never resulted in criminal charges. Jackson reportedly paid a multimillion dollar settlement in that case, but maintained his innocence.
The $12.3 million Neverland Ranch in the Santa Ynez Valley has a mansion, its own zoo and amusement park, and has often been the site of children's parties.
Steve Manning, a Jackson family spokesman, briefly talked to reporters outside a Las Vegas recording studio and said Jackson was "holding up" and had his family's support.
In a television documentary broadcast on ABC earlier this year, Jackson said he had slept in a bed with many children. "When you say bed you're thinking sexual," the singer said during the interview. "It's not sexual, we're going to sleep. I tuck them in. ... It's very charming, it's very sweet."
Jackson caused an international uproar last year when he displayed his baby, Prince Michael II, to fans by dangling him briefly from a fourth-floor balcony in Germany. Jackson called the incident a "terrible mistake," and Berlin authorities said the actions were not punishable.
The singer had international hits with the albums "Thriller" (1982), "Bad" (1987) and "Dangerous" (1991) saw his career begin to collapse after the 1993 allegations.
His last studio album, "Invincible," sold about 2 million copies in the United States - great for most artists, especially veteran stars, but only so-so for the man who bills himself as the King of Pop.

Great jokes, BS.
You know, with the Kobe trial, the Peterson trial, and Martha Stewart, we just don't have enough time on the news to devote to another decade-long court process. I'm so sick of hearing about all of these court cases only to be on the doorstep of another OJ trial.
Thank goodness the Rosie case was quick.

MTV Reporter:
So, Michael, I understand you were charged with child molestation. Is there anything you would like to say to your accusers?
MJ:
Just stop it, just stop doggin' me around.
MTV Reporter:
Do you feel they have some sort of vendetta against you? I mean, what kind of opinion do you think they have about you?
MJ:
I'm bad. I'm bad. You know it.
MTV Reporter:
Well, from what I understand this accusation stems from an incident when a visitor happened to discover you and the child in question, in bed. When they asked you who the child was what did you say?
MJ:
The kid is not my son.
MTV Reporter:
Well, it looks like there may be enough evidence to go into a hearing. What do you plan on doing in regards to the charges once in court?
MJ:
Beat it, beat it.
MTV Reporter:
So you will face criminal procedures against you in court?
MJ:
I'll be there. Don't you know, baby, yeah. I'll be there.
MTV Reporter:
So, what makes you so sure Michale Jackson, king of pop, child star, will beat the rap?
MJ:
Cuz' he's a smooth criminal.
MTV Reporter:
Do you really think it will be that easy?
MJ:
Easy as 1,2,3. Easy as do, rae, mi. Easy as A,B,C.
MTV Reporter:
I understand your popularity has waned considerably in the last few decades. Why do you think so many people will be interested in your court appearance?
MJ:
Cuz' it's a thriller! Thriller, yah.
MTV Reporter:
Well, are you concerned about how they are misrepresenting you in the public media?
MJ:
Say, say, say, what you want.
