KFC Sets the Record Straight
Fried Chicken Can Be Part of a Healthy, Balanced Diet

(LOUISVILLE, KY - Oct. 28, 2003) - KFC Corporation announced today it is setting the record straight - fried chicken can, in fact, be part of a healthy diet.

To educate the public and make its point, KFC will begin airing a new national advertising campaign that lets consumers know the truth about the fat, carbohydrates and protein in its fried chicken. The ads compare KFC Original RecipeŽ Chicken Breasts against a Burger King WhopperŽ. KFC also is providing complete nutritional information about its products in all its restaurants nationwide and on its Web site.

"We want to set the record straight. Consumers should no longer feel guilty about eating fried chicken," said Scott Bergren, KFC's Executive Vice President, Marketing and Food Innovation. "Consumers will be surprised to learn they can enjoy fried chicken as part of a healthy, balanced diet. Of course, they should eat all food in moderation, and balance that with an appropriate amount of exercise - it's all about energy in, energy out."

Numbers Matter
When it comes to a healthy diet, numbers matter. A KFC Original Recipe Chicken Breast has less than half the fat and less calories than a Burger King Whopper. A KFC Original Recipe Chicken Breast has 19 grams of fat and 380 calories; compared to a Burger King Whopper with 43 grams of fat and 710 calories.

"Until now, most people probably didn't realize they can enjoy an entire freshly prepared meal at KFC (Original Recipe Chicken Breast, mashed potatoes and gravy and corn on the cob) for less fat and calories than a Burger King Whopper. With more and more Americans on diets and increasingly health-conscious, we thought it was important to get this information to consumers so they can judge for themselves how to make KFC part of their healthy lifestyle," Bergren said.

They're kidding, right??

i only wish they were kidding. i've been sick the past week and have seen a lot of tv in consiquence and have seen kfc ads claiming how low in carbs and high in protein kfc chicken is. a diet aimed at people "cutting carbs and going high on protein". it's bad, what is this world coming to?

I saw one of those commercials. At one point, they were quoting the nutrition numbers based on the chicken with the skin removed.

Also, this...

a Burger King Whopper with 43 grams of fat and 710 calories.

...is obscene.

I don't know about you guys, but I've pretty much given up on fast food. I'm 25 and I think I've pretty much just eaten myself sick of since I was 8. None of it appeals to me anymore and the more I learn, the less I want to eat it. Maybe I'm just (gulp) growing up. Wendy's I still dig. But BK, Mickey D's, Arby's, KFC and others are all gone. (Subway doesn't count. That's just like a Deli!)

Word 'em up Rolf. Er...Phil. Anyway, I can still get my grub on at Wendy's, but everything else is just awful. The last time I ate Burger King I thought I was going to die.

Oh, and Subway? I just don't get it. Chewy bread, shoddy vegetables, and low grade lunchmeat. If I were Jared Fogel and had a choice between eating nothing but Subway and being a fat bastard, I'd choose to be a fat bastard.

Edit: Oops. It's been brought to my attention that I am a fat bastard. So disregard the above.

Phil's only 25?? [or am I *that* gullible?]

I tried those new BK chicken baguettes - not too bad. It's only partly tasty, but then I remembered I was only consuming 5 grams of fat. Nice work BK!

I heard that some nutrition org is now suing KFC for making these "healthy" claims.

I can attest to the fact that Phil is a sprung chicken.

He interviewed me once at WMSR when he was still a wee intern at WOXY! :D

Yup. The Driver's License says I'm 25. I'll be 26 next though, if that helps any. The License also says I'm "Studly" Which is kind of odd...

I hate fast food. I get a small craving about once a year but just really cant stand the stuff. Wendy's salads or chilli and MAYBE Arbys is about it.

I think it tastes like crap.

Holy crap, I just had a Whopper last night. I don't know why. After I ate it, it felt like a swallowed (or swallered, depending on where you live in southwestern Ohio) a brick. No more BK for me. I can tolerate McD's and Wendy's. I had a Rally burger a few months ago and I can safely say that will be my last as well.

I'm out of the fast food loop lately too. I will ocassionally drop by Arbys for a Market Fresh sandwich and a baked potato, but otherwise, I steer clear.

I did notice on TV the other day, that McDs finally caught up to Wendy's by making their McNuggets from white meat instead of beaks and claws.

haha! Beaks and claws - eewww!

Speaking of fake chicken, Papa John's needs to stick what they know best and not make "chicken" strips anymore! Yee.

Count me in. I ate so much damned fast food when I was in college that now, that I've moved on and am getting older, I just don't crave it or want it like I once did. I'd much rather just have something in the freezer that's healthier and easy to nuke then to go, spend $5-6 to fill me up and clog my arteries.

i pretty much gave up on fast food when i started boycotting pepsi (which, at the time included kfc, taco bell, pizza hut, frito-lay, etc.) about 10 years ago. i still go for the occasional #1, no mayo, no tomato, no cheese w/ root beer (wendy's), or #3, qp, no cheese w/ coke (mac d's). usually, it's a road trip picnic.

the best mcdonald's i've ever had was at/near wright state. the food looked like the pictures, was hot and fresh, and they even had banana shakes!

The other night I was drinking beer and working out in the garage on my car (my Gran Turismo garage) and I decided I needed food and was lazy.... I went to Hardee's

I got one of their "six dollar burger" things........ it was seriously about the best hamburger I've had in years. For some reason I'd always lumped Hardee's in with the likes of Krystal's and White Castle *shudder*, but man....... they fire up a mean burger.

of course... it may have been the beer.... or the Gran Turismo for that matter

i can safely say i haven't had fast food in over 2 years (probably 3 at this point). i've found places around that are locally owned and have high quality product like the deli next to work (they are a specialty deli and i can get a prosciutto sandwich for $5.00, w/ drink and chips comes to $7.00) and the burger joint down the street, the burger bistro has some of the best burgers ever and even has a side order called frings (frnech frys and onion rings for those who just can't decide).

i really enjoy going to the locally owned places it's reasonably priced food, quick service but i just can't call it fast food that would be insulting the quality.

I guess I'm in the minority here. I know fast food is bad, evil, even satanic. Still, I like the stuff, as nasty as some of it is. Meat is tasty, especially when I don't have to cook it. White Castle is amazing. The best. Wendy's is definitely the best of the standard burger joints -- can't stand Mc D's and BK. Hardees always has pee on the counter so I avoid them too. Arby's used to be good but has gone downhill over the years. Subway r0x0rs. The few places I do like though I like pretty much. I personally don't have to worry about health issues, since I eat an otherwise low-fat, low-sodium diet AND my metabolism is so freaking ridiculously fast that I practically burn the calories off as fast as I intake them, while sitting.

White Castle really is amazing though. Now I have the crave. Damn you all!

Well, my dad hit 50 this year and he still only weighs like 170. Part of that is from alcohol, too, and since I won't ever drink a drop, I don't ahve to worry there. Either way, though, I'll be eating White Castle tonight! About ten of the jalape(insert enye here)o burgers....

That's cool...enjoy!

Just got a couple of good links off the 97X New Music Update:

This one (http://www.sfgate.com/columnists/morford/) is a pretty decent view on the American obesity problem...which lead me to this one (http://slate.msn.com/id/2090861), which is all about the new KFC marketing scheme. Both are good reads.

I saw that commercial and was like WTF? I honestly thought I was watching SNL or some kinda spoof.

I steer clear from most fast food, since I'm vegetarian. I eat a lot of subway, since there's nothing else near work that I can or will eat (McD's, Skyline). I used to love McD's fries with sweet and sour sauce, until I found out they sprayed beef juice on them. Oh well, better for my arteries and waistline. My senior year in college we lived a block from wendys, and my 2 roommates and I ate biggie fries like every other night for dinner. Ugh, the weight gain. Every once in awhile though (especially when I've been eating super healthy), I'll get an obscene craving for fried chicken. But I usually have pizza instead.

Next week food companies including McDonald's, Cadbury and PepsiCo will be called to justify their marketing tactics to a committee of MPs investigating the causes of obesity
Heh...I'd like to hear what McDs has to say about their campaign aimed at kids. Hopefully they'll stop that shit before my kid gets old enough to know what a McNugget is.
