View Full Version : In The Land Of Bengal-dumb...

Good to see our football team play up to all the national attention the media gave it last week. For those of you that don’t watch ESPN most nights of the week, let’s just say that all the so-called pundits had said something to this affect. "This team under Marvin Lewis has turned the corner and is now ready to compete in the NFL…" Blah, blah, blah…Well, after yesterday’s debacle in the desert, it seems like the boys are still stuck in the gear of mediocrity. Another very winnable game goes by the way side as the lowly Arizona Cardinals punk the
Bengals 17-14.

Adding insult to injury was Jeff Blake, yes fans the same Jeff Blake who was pretty much run out of town in favor of…gasp…Akili Smith picked apart the Bengals defense. Well, okay he really only picked on Artrell Hawkins. Add to that the defense just getting run over by someone named Marcel and that spells embarrassing loss. I’m sure nary a word will be heard about the Bengals this week outside of city limits.

I can go back to hoping for 8-8 again!

In the words of Jesse Jackson, "Keep Hope Alive!!"

Hey, they had one bad game. Or, Jon Kitna did. At the beginning of the year I predicted a 6-10 season, and that looks eminantly makable or even beatable. The thing I like about this team is that they have proven that they don't let things get them down. And I think they'll bounce back next game.

I do think it's time to start working in Palmer. I like Kitna, but there is no question who the future is, and we should give him some snaps and even let him start a couple of games so he can build up some experience & confidence going into next year.

Hell, when was the last time we were even paying attention to the Bengals halfway through the season? They have had a legitimate chance to win all of their games but the Broncos game (which, dammit, was the one and only game I have been to this year). They are on the upswing, but don't forget they are crawling from the primordial ooze that was last year... it is a big stride for them just to be mediocre/competitive.

Go Bengals!

Its not like they got crushed. 17-14 is a loss, but not a devastating one, especially from a team that convincingly beat San Francisco the week before.

(which, dammit, was the one and only game I have been to this year). wow, well dude, you're no longer allowed to games. Get RS to go, whenever he goes to a regular-season Bengals game they win. THIS IS NOT A JOKE! It's real. He's special that way. In fact, if I remember right, the last time the Bengals had a decent season was before he started dating "her" seriously.

damn, the Bengals are tightly revolving around RS's life.

We should all pay for him to go to the next game. Its not like they got crushed. 17-14 is a loss, but not a devastating one, especially from a team that convincingly beat San Francisco the week before. i guess shit is at least fertilizer... right?

GO BROWNS!!!!!!

Nepenthean
05 Nov 2003, 11:12 AM
I'm sorry, but I will never root for the Browns. I don't dislike them as much as I hate the Steelers, but the Bengals could go 0-16 for 16 years before I would root for the Browns. Even then, I'd be chanting "Who Dey!?!" every Sunday in fall.

As for this team -- I too think they show a lot of promise. Last year, a loss like this would have led to five more, and they wouldn't have really cared. This year, I think they will learn from it and do something about it. It's also good to see them fighting to the end every week. In the past, it seemed that they gave up by the time they were down by two scores.

I think they should keep Kitna starting, though. Yes, the team lives and dies by the guy right now, but we do NOT want Palmer to turn into the next Smith or Klingler. Granted, Palmer seems to be a lot better than either of them were, but I really don't think it's a good idea to throw him in as a starter just yet. A team with a losing history for thirteen years is not the easiest thing to turn around, and as a starting quarterback, that would be all on his shoulders. He should take some snaps this year, and wait to start until the Bengals are a few games over .500. I don't want to see him crack under the pressure and get burned out, because he could be good in the future.

the Mistake by the Lake... u mean.

Anyway..

I too believe tossing Carson in there right now would be horrific. I mean, we are still in contention thanks to the fact that the Steelers have gone AWOL, Baltimore is as consistent as cottage cheese, and the Browns are being... well,... an expansion team.

Save him for next year or until this one is completely in the can. I mean, it's one thing to take over a team with NO expectations, it's another to take over a team with a mediocre record the year before.

After all, how many games would Kling or Akili had to have won for us to claim a turnaround? 4?

I have to disagree. This was a huge loss no matter what the score was. This was a game they were supposed to win, this was a game that they needed in order to keep pace with the god awful AFC North leading Ravens. Granted they could have just ran into a Cardinal team still riding a high from beating the 49ers a week prior, but it's just so damn frustrating to see the Bengals keep losing games they should be winning. In all honesty, this team should be 6-2. But, I guess they have to crawl before they can walk.

And for God sakes please do not start Carson Palmer. You ask though, what can sitting out an entire season do for a rookie QB? Well ask Mr. Steve McNair of the Titans, he sat out his rookie season, learned the ropes, and is now probably going to be the MVP. Of course you could also argue that Peyton Manning didn't need to sit a year out and look at him? Gee I love contradicting my own statements.

Talk about bandwagon. Why does everyone expect a miracle? The Bengals WILL lose games this season and the probably WON'T make the playoffs, but at least they've started moving in the right direction. I think they are establihing a "winning" attitude that can carry over to subsequent seasons. Something they haven't had since 1990. They need to cut the cancer that is Corey Dillon. He is great for a two yard gain, otherwise a liability to the team.

something to point out:

the Bengals have been giantkillers.

They have beaten every divsion leader they've faced. The only one that could be reconsidered was the Raiders game b/c, well, the Raiders lead the division at that time but it was WAAAAAAAY early in the season so, there u go. Every other team that has established itself as the leader has fallen.

There's hope folks.

5-5 and 9-1 going into wk 12

I'm not going to go quite as far as Chad Johnson and guarantee or even predict a victory. But, fact is the Chiefs are due for a loss here one of these weeks. They're the best team this year, but the way the NFL works, there will very very rarely be a team that gets through the season unscathed.

So why not? Go Bengals! Go Krogering!

IPrayForSound
11 Nov 2003, 12:59 PM
I gotta agree with the Dude here...the Chiefs are due (no infringement intended) for a loss, and why not the Bengals? As balanced as the passing and running games were last week, it wouldn't be a huge leap to predict, at the very least, a memorable (and highlight-filled) game. If Kitna can add 50-100 yards to the passing game without dragging down Rudi's numbers too much, I don't see the Bengals losing. If they end up with a positive turnover ratio, there'll be no question about the win.

Duemellon

See RS, that's what happens when you leave...

don't u realize we're surrounded by ppl who are treating the Chief's as THE playoffs? You aren't used to seeing ppl walking around wearing Bengal stuff and not immediately excusing themselves by saying "laundry day".

You left that behind so you're cynicism is probably more grounded in reality than our dreamy-Tinkerbell-i-believe-shit.

But u'kno what? stop pissing in our cornflakes, let us be deluded until wk 12, k? and u'kno, it wouldn't be bad for you to get on the bandwagon.

No, not the "Bengals-supporter" bandwagon 'cuz I know you've never gotten off that one. Get on the one labeled "We love delusions" wagon. It's great.

Go BENGALS!

I'm actually saving a few $$'s for playoff tix right now.

On Wednesday, the Bengals guaranteed he’d be talking here for the next six years when they signed him to a five-year contract extension.

Then, on Thursday, Johnson guaranteed he would never give any more guarantees.

“This will be my last guarantee,” said Johnson before Thursday’s practice. “I should have let my play do the speaking. But you know me. That’s hard. There are some older people in the organization that opened my eyes a little bit and had me looking at the guarantee from different ways. How other people take it and the way it affects everyone around me.”

Johnson wouldn’t give up the older person, but said, “They’ve opened my eyes and I’ve seen it that way. I’ve got no regrets. I just want to go play. I can’t wait.”

From the AP:
`It's self-promotion,'' Anderson said. ``You guys are buying into it, he's eating it up. He's leading the AFC in receiving (yards) right now, trying to get to the Pro Bowl. He's popular right now.

``It's a comment that's not needed because he's not a leader on this team. We rally behind guys who work hard every day of the week in practice and are being subtle about their comments, guys like Rudi Johnson or Jon Kitna. Those are the guys you rally behind, not the loudmouth guy who puts his gold teeth in right before you go on the field.''

Extension shows Lewis' belief in playmaker

By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer
....
"Free agents around the league can say, 'Tampa Bay takes care of their guys two years early. Cincinnati, Marvin's got them thinking like the rest of the league,' " said Anderson, who also wanted to clarify that apparently critical comments he made Wednesday about Johnson were in jest.
....
"Everybody kind of blew everything out of proportion," Johnson said of the guarantee. "We match up well with (Kansas City) across the board. That's more like where I should have gone with it. I feel we're going to play well."

Johnson said an "older person" in the organization made him realize how his comments could negatively affect the team and his teammates.

"Kind of opened up my eyes," Johnson said of the person, widely believed to be Lewis. "People are going to hear it, see it and read it and have a different opinion. So this will be my last guarantee."

If ya wanna go, head down with me, but there ain't gonna be no will-call tickets. They're not just "sold out enough to get on the tee-vee" sold out, they're "sold out and no we don't have a single ticket even behind a pole to sell you" sold out. I'm gonna go stand near a scalper, and then when someone goes to sell their extra ticket, I'll offer face-value which'll be like $15-20 more than the scalper. Have to tell you that it's been sort of weird here in K.C. this season. People are excited, but I don't see as many crazy, trash-talking people. I haven't even seen quite as much red clothing on Fridays. I can't explain it. Everyone's happy about it, but maybe a little cautious this season. I usually ignore the whole thing being a Rams fan.
