Our PS2 is acting crazy lately. It will play all of our old games and even a used game that we just recently purchased. However, it will not play 2 new games that we got within the last week. AutoModelista (or something like that) and SSX3. Auto won't load at all, and the only thing we can see on the SSX3 game is the little snowflake in the bottom left-hand corner.
Has anyone else had this problem with their PS2?
Where can you take on of these things to have it looked at/tinkered with?
Suggestions on how to keep my boyfriend from throwing it out the window...?

mine went nuts like that 3 and 1/2 months in. i found a ton of other people online saying the same thing. i called Sony tech support and they had me try one diagnostic test and then determined that my unit was, wait... how did the guy put it? oh yeah, he said my PS2 was "totally fucked". so, instead of sending it back to Sony for $110 to repair (maybe that's now less since the PS2's now sell for less), i took it to Meijer's, said it was a gift and that i didn't have the receipt, and i walked out with a new PS2 that i haven't had any issues with yet. yet. (it helped that i still had the box and that it was in mint condition.)
if your man does pitch your PS2, buy an Xbox this time. you'll be much happier.

I bought a service plan with mine. I'm sure I won't need it until it expires, which always seems to be the kind of luck I have. But yeah, I think if I ever buy another system, it'll be the X-Box. I haven't had any problems with my PS2, but the game selection for X-Box seems to get better and better, and i hear it's a better all around system. Ah, well.

Not sure if it is the same thing that happened to mine a couple months ago but I had a problem where it wouldn't play certain games for a while then it just wouldn't play anything at all and when I tried, all it said was "Disc Read Error".
I looked up some thing online and saw that there was a class action lawsuit against Sony for this problem because it had happened to so many people. I called a Sony number that I had and went to the dept. that handles Playstations. The lady had me send it in to them ( I did have to pay for that...actually my work did but they don't know that) anyway.....I sent it in and a week later they sent it back to me good as new and didn't charge me one penny....I haven't had a problem out of it since then.
If this sounds like the problem you're having, let me know and I'll get you the specific contact info that I used to get mine taken care of.

A little while ago on TechTV's x-play they did a segment on ps2's with errors. If you aren't afraid to take yours apart, you might look here (http://www.techtv.com/xplay/features/story/0,24330,3516150,00.html).

OK...so he bought the new Tony Hawk from a different store and had ZERO problems playing it. I'm thinking the fault lies with the EB store that sold him those other two games, and not his PS2. Hmm...

I don't know, my playstation is acting like a little bitch as well lately. Tonight it froze up twice while I was playing (had to restart & of course I hadn't saved anything). It didn't want to play a new game yesterday, all i could get for 30 min was disk read error. I've also had trouble playing some DVD's, stuff i've played on it a million times.
arrrggggggg. I want it fixed.

That definitely sounds like what they were talking about in that x-play article i linked to up above. Basically, if I recall from the segment, you take apart your ps2 and adjust a screw which changes the focus of the laser.

The only thing about that fix is that if you break open that seal and then you try to send it in to get repaired in about another 6-8 weeks (because that fix is only temporary), you will have to pay for everything........it is all VOID after that seal is broken. I'm telling you.....just call Sony and talk to someone in customer service and they will tell you where to send it back to for the repair with the fee waived......unless I'm just one lucky bastard that they did it for but I don't think so.....check out this link.

You just have to be firm with them and not take any SH*T then they will fix you up.....it worked for me.
