You’ve probably noticed that here at WOXY, we’re big fans of Austin trio White Denim. We’ve been spinning their upcoming Downtown release, Fits, for a couple of months now. In October, the band will be at the Mohawk on Red River to celebrate the release and get some local love before hitting the road with Brazos. Before that, they’ll be in our studios doing a guest dj set with Shiv.
Fits is their third full-length. It continues the thread of rambling guitar rock that we’ve seen on Workout Holiday and Exposion, but rambles in a more succinct way. James Petralli has learned how to use dozens of ideas in one song without ever forcing an unwilling epic. The tunes are to the point: and the rhythm section proves its worth by keeping up with all the manic mood changes their frontman delivers. Don’t be mistaken, however, in thinking that Steve Terebecki’s bass playing and Josh Block’s drumming exist just for support — both players lock horns with each other and the guitar (sometimes looped) throughout, picking up and discarding hundreds of moments that tease and tickle the listener. There’s some Kinks, some Beefheart, some Allman Brothers and some Zeppelin here, but there’s also something totally magical and endlessly rocking that comes from the trio when they’re together. Sample some tunes at Lala and watch the video for “I Start to Run”.
The show is Saturday, October 24 at the Mohawk (get tickets here) and the guest dj set is Friday, October 23 at 2 p.m. Tune in and email your requests to dj@woxy.com.
On Sunday night, WOXY presents south London’s finest outside art rockers, Art Brut.
In 2005, the group released their debut, Bang Bang Rock & Roll, demonstrating a real feeling and enthusiasm that most indie rock bands performing at the time could only dream of. They followed it up in 2007 with It’s a Bit Complicated, a generally well-received sophomore effort. This year’s Art Brut vs. Satan continues down the raucous, angular path the band began on, and expands on their flexibility. The group found a mentor in producer Frank Black, who humbled lead singer Eddie Argos. “It was amazing, I was so glad when he agreed to do it. I thought I would be intimidated, because it’s Black Francis you know? But it wasn’t, it was amazing. He picked us up at the airport in his car, and he’s just such a friendly enthusiastic man. It’s hard to be intimidated by him, really, as he’s just a good person.”
The band has been on a whirlwind tour of the U.S. since mid-October, and they’ll keep going until November 15, when they’ll end their trip at New York’s Bowery Ballroom. Princeton open, touring in support of their latest, Cocoon of Love, in stores now.
Buy tickets ($12) here, or send an email to woxycontests @ gmail dot com with subject line “art brut” to be entered to win a pair on us.

If you are a fan of The Feelies, you probably already know that the band reunited last fall and have been playing here and there since then, much to the delight of their fans. Their most recent appearance was last month when they performed Crazy Rhythms live in its entirety as part of the All Tomorrow’s Parties-curated Don’t Look Back series In addition to the exciting live appearances, Bar None records has re-issued two of their classic albums on vinyl and CD this year, and we want to give you a chance to win them.
That is right, we have copies of both Crazy Rhythms and The Good Earth up for grabs on vinyl and CD. To enter the contest, send an email to woxy contests at gmail dot com. Type “Feelies” in the subject line and you are registered to win!
We’ve only been here a month, but we’ve already learned that Austin doesn’t mess around when it comes to live music. There’s events for the music-lover happening year ’round, from sidewalk performances to arena concerts. One event that we’ve had our eye on for quite some time is Fun Fun Fun Fest, an up-and-coming contender in the world of music festivals.
On four stages in two days, Fun Fest will span genres to bring us bands like Ratatat, Destroyer, GZA, Danzig, 7 Seconds, HEALTH, Why?, Crystal Castles, of Montreal, Shonen Knife, Death, Atlas Sound, Broadcast, Lucero and many (many) more. That’s just for starters: there will be on-site shopping, comedy, art, food and a skate ramp at the park this year, keeping fans young and old entertained during what’s usually one of the mildest weekends of the year.
We’re excited to be partnering with Transmission Entertainment to bring you all the latest news, updates, after party information and more regarding the festival. Between now and November 7, WOXY will be spinning the artists, offering ticket giveaways, breaking news and being your one-stop-shop for news about the fest. Follow us on Twitter and Facebook for all the updates that don’t make it to the Futurist.

The band released an excellent sophomore record in September, Let It Beep and we can’t get enough of it. Luckily, in addition to the eclectic selections from in their guest DJ hour, there is a unreleased Royal Bangs cover that makes it into the set as well.

Grab your October edition of Austin Monthly, where you’ll find (on page 40) a really complimentary piece about WOXY and our history.
P.F. Wilson starts with Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man and covers us all the way to the present, tracking our ups and downs with humor and admiration. It’s really a wonderful piece, and one we’re proud to say represents us and our rich history (and future!) quite comprehensively. Our favorite part?
“If WOXY and new owner Future Sounds get their formula right, the station could emerge as a blueprint for the future of radio in an era of on-demand downloads and further solidify Austin’s place as the heart of independent music worldwide.”
Couldn’t have said it better ourselves! Friend Austin Monthly on Facebook and Twitter.
A Place to Bury Strangers might be the only touring band keeping the earplug industry in business. Their shoe-gazing, wall-of-sound live show is something to behold, and their albums aren’t far off that mark, either.
Sunday night, WOXY is proud to present A Place to Bury Strangers — fresh off the release of their latest, Exploding Head — at the Mohawk. The album was recorded by Andy Smith (Paul Simon, David Bowie) in Brooklyn at the band’s own Death By Audio studios. The first single “In Your Heart” is out now and includes remixes from Vince Clarke and Cereal Spiller as and the exclusive B-side “Strictly Looks.” They’ll be joined by Darker My Love and All the Saints.
The New York-based trio, led by guitar and pedal wizard Oliver Ackermann, blend mind-altering shoegaze, space rock and psych, offering dense odes to the axe. Recent years have been kind to the group: they’ve shared the stage with Jesus & Mary Chain, Brian Jonestown Massacre and Nine Inch Nails, been lauded by Pitchfork, and signed to Mute Records. All the while, Ackermann continues to work at his Death By Audio pedal company, creating custom pedals for bands like Wilco, Lightning Bolt, My Bloody Valentine and U2. Not bad for a young rock’n'roller.
