It’s almost that time of the year again, time for the annual CMJ Music Marathon in New York. And what comes along with the festival every year are the CMJ Awards. We are humbled and excited to once again be mentioned alongside so many other great radio stations and websites this year. From the CMJ website….
You picked ‘em, now here they are: The 2009 CMJ College Radio Award Nominees! Voting for the winners will take place during CMJ Music Marathon & Film Festival at the CMJ booth and during College Day. Anyone with a CMJ badge can vote.
WOXY is up for two CMJ Awards this year…
Best Online Only Station & Best Website
A big thank you to all of our friends and colleagues that nominated us again this year!
We had a fantastic time at our party Sunday night, and it was a success in no small part thanks to all of you. We met Ohio transplants who had been listening to us for years, locals who are just finding us now, and everyone in between. We had a blast — and we hope you did too!
Thanks again to Waterloo Records, Ruby’s BBQ, Scoot Inn, Austin Visitors & Convention Bureau, Hole in the Roof and the bands (TV Torso, Black Before Red, Martin Crane and English Teeth) for helping us throw such a great party. Check out more pictures from the evening at Austinist.
There’s also an interview with Joe at the Onion’s AV Club to check out — see how he does with his Austin Orientation.
As some of you are well aware, WOXY has a pretty storied history spanning the past 26 years. We came across this short documentary put together by WOXY fan Zachary Herche about the station online last week and wanted to share it with all of you. The doc is about 10 minutes long and features some WOXY staffers, past and present. Enjoy!
You think we’re on top of things??? Well, say hello to ARTROCKER, Britain’s leading music magazine. Not just a magazine, though, ARTROCKER also hosts their own club night in London showcasing many of today’s hottest buzz bands.
Oh, and a radio show…of which WOXY.com will be the exclusive broadcast host in the USA. 90 minutes every week of the very newest music straight from London, spotlighting a mind-boggling number of up-and-coming UK bands. On the bleedin’ edge, they are!
So make sure to carve out some time & pay a visit to ARTROCKER, coming soon to WOXY.com.
To get an even better idea of what ARTROCKER is about, here are a couple of ARTROCKER TV videos to check out……

It is always fun to run across a mention of the station. And it’s pretty cool when it comes from Rolling Stone no less…… (thanks to Eleanor (rcc94) from our message boards for the heads up) View the full article here…..
If you pick up the May issue of Cincinnati Magazine, you will find a nice little photo spread about WOXY.com. Our friend Jon Willis was in studio awhile back and took some shots that ended up being the May photo feature! So, if you are in the Cincinnati area, get out and grab a copy of the latest issue. Here are two pages scanned in from the magazine.
Our very own Matt Shiv was recently interviewed by the blog, “People With Animal Heads“. Shiv talked about the WOXY play list, local bands, and also gives advice to bands looking to send their music to the station. Here are a few quotes from the piece I want to highlight….
On local / regional music making its way onto the play list…..
“When WOXY was a local FM broadcast, we really went out of the way to spotlight the local music community. Once we went internet-only in 2004, we had to refocus our efforts a bit. Just because you are a band in Cincinnati or Dayton, that doesn’t automatically earn you airplay on the station these days. The music submitted by local artists is held up to the same standards as any submission from around the world. If we like it, we support it,” Shiv said. “Mike, Joe, and I are all from this area, so even without noticing that we have a fondness for Midwestern bands and artists, I think that sometimes that just shines through. In addition to the tri-state, we’ve really supported a lot of bands from Chicago, Detroit, Columbus, Cleveland and Nashville.”
Tips for bands submitting music.
“The main suggestion that I can make to anybody trying to pursue radio airplay is to have quality product and submit it professionally. At WOXY.com, we’ve got a staff of three people and get hundreds of cd submissions a week. I can’t even keep up with everything that comes in the door, never mind people e-mailing me asking me to follow 500 links to listen to their music online. Our attitude has always been, if you want me to hear your music, you’ll get it into my hands,”
On how WOXY has helped young bands.
“I know that we have a lot of A&R people from record labels who pay attention to the bands that we playlist who are unsigned. We get e-mails from them often asking us for more details on a certain band or they’ll approach us after a Lounge Act performance airs asking for contact info. All we do is play the music that we feel strongly about, but I am always thrilled when that translates into more exposure or a label signing for a band,”
Much has been said in the past couple months regarding the Internet Radio Royalty decision that was announced and how it could affect WOXY.com. We have been sought out by some media outlets as a result and I wanted to highlight two of those today here on The Futurist.
The Digital Savant himself, Bryan Jay did an interview with the Dayton Daily News recently. You can find the article here.
“We do think artists should be compensated for their work,” said Miller, a Dayton native. “But you could go from collecting some royalties now to collecting no royalties, because you just killed off the whole industry.”
And this from a Wall Street Journal article from last month gives a more in-depth look. You will need to login to view the entire article, but I have some quotes below.
“The annual cost of running WOXY could more than double to around $2 million, far exceeding the station’s $500,000 to $1 million in annual revenue. The board’s decision could still be appealed or rescinded by Congress, but WOXY manager Bryan Jay Miller says, “I don’t see the situation getting any better.”
“Sue Busch, head of radio promotions at Seattle’s Sub Pop Records, says most radio executives she knows rarely play new, independent music, relying on business consultants to tell them which songs are likely to be most popular. The WOXY DJs, she says, play songs they enjoy themselves.”
There are also brief WOXY mentions in recent editions of The Observer, and The Washington Post. See WOXY in the news? Send me an email at joe@woxy.com with a link and I will be sure to credit you here if we mention the article.
