Did you catch Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears doing their thing on WOXY.com today? Of course, we recorded the whole thing and have video of the whole thing as well. I wanted to get you a taste of things right away though, so I grabbed my Flip cam and took this short video of their first song, “Sugarfoot.”
It’s a busy day here at EAR studios in Austin and we hope you are enjoying the bands that have been rolling through. We thought you might like a little behind the scenes look at things here at the studio today so I shot a quick video…….
Luke Temple has one of the best voices in the indie rock spectrum and has impressed loads of people with his two solo records in the past few years. Never afraid to re-invent himself, Luke decided to change course for his latest project Here We Go Magic by taking his exceptional vocals and layering the album with a wide variety of sounds and adventures. In order to perform the album live, Luke enlisted the help of some other musicians who joined us in the WOXY Lounge for this session.
During this set we get three songs from Luke and his band from the debut Here We Go Magic album, as well as a new song that could land on an upcoming release.
MusicNOW 2009 starts tonight here in Cincinnati and we had Bryce Dessner drop by for a chat yesterday about this years festival. If you missed out, enjoy this segment of the cat with Mike below. Hope to see you at the fest!
Ever since we did a session with them last year during SXSW, we have been keeping tabs on The Answering Machine. The UK band dropped a great single for their upcoming debut album recently, and we have been giving it alot of airplay, hope you are digging it too. And now, the video for that song, “Cliffer” is available, watch it below and get ready for the debut album from Heist Or Hit Records very soon.
Ben Sollee was born and raised the the bluegrass state of Kentucky, and carries a rich musical history along with him. Since Ben released his debut album, Learning To Bend, last year on local label SonaBlast out of Louisville, he has garnered well deserved attention from all over the country for his combination of soulful vocals and precise cello skills.
While out on the road with WOXY favorite, and fellow Kentuckian Daniel Martin Moore, we were really pleased to be able to host Ben in our lounge, where he shared 5 songs with us, including tunes from his debut, and his more recent Something Worth Keeping EP.
Listen to the full performance below, including an interview segment. Or download your favorite MP3’s from the set.

I think it is pretty safe to say that lots of us, myself included, have a soft spot in our music listening hearts for 1990’s inspired alternative rock don’t we? Quite a few bands from that time period can still melt your face in the form of early Sleater Kinney or Sonic Youth. As a matter of fact, I think it would be easy to imagine UME lead singer Lauren Larson in the Kim Gordon role, but with more punch and better vocals.
All possible influences aside though, UME bring guitar shredding rock to the forefront, so it is not surprise that I gravitated towards them.
UME which is pronounced “ooo-may”, seem to be one of Austin’s best kept secrets. In a city with hordes of new bands UME has been doing their thing since 2003, and just now beginning to get some of the attention they deserve thanks to their upcoming Sunshower EP, which is due out next week.
The urgency of rock music can be a rarity these days, but UME certainly hear the call and sound the alarm in a big way on their upcoming release.
Still not convinced? Listen to the mp3 below and watch the video, now!
Morrissey is back and for some reason, he is holding a baby! That’s right, Morrissey’s new album, Years Of Refusal comes out next week here in the states and we have some copies of the CD that we want to give to you!
This is gonna be as easy a contest as there ever was, because to qualify all you have to do is send an email to woxycontests at gmail dot com with the subject line reading “Years Of Refusal”. That’s it! U.S. Residents only on this one please.
If you hear the words “instrumental rock” and “Austin, TX” in the same sentence, it’s pretty hard not to reference Explosions In The Sky. After all, the band has become well known in the past few years for their anthemic brand of post-rock. But forget what you know about Austin and Instrumental Rock, because The Calm Blue Sea are fully prepared to change that.
While they may get grouped together with EIS often because of reasons already stated, The Calm Blue Sea do more than stand up on their own feet on their debut self titled album. The more appropriate term you should be hearing or reading when the band is described is “beautiful”, because that is the word I could not get out of my mind when listening to the soaring tunes on this record.
Providing the perfect backdrop for a film soundtrack or whatever you might be doing at the time, this album is not only atmospheric and at times ambient, but flat out rocks in places as well. Be prepared for deep reaching epic songs from this 6 song album, all of which clock out in the 7-9 minutes range (with one exception). The highs and lows are equally intriguing on the album, building from an area of gentle tones to a full out post-rock epic.
Keep an eye on The Calm Blue Sea, 2009 could be a great year for these guys.
I’ll get you started with this video of the band performing their song, “Literal” live…
We were supposed to have Passion Pit in the lounge yesterday afternoon. But weather conditions here in the midwest made it tough difficult as the band was traveling from Cleveland through some rough conditions. They were kind enough to commit to stopping by today instead though, before they head north again to Columbus, OH.
So tune in today at about 1:30pm ET for a session with Passion Pit in the WOXY.com Lounge! In the meantime, check em out below in their video for “Sleepyhead”….
