SXSW 2009 Session Recap – Mother Mother

mother1
Vancouver-based Mother Mother have become a fixture at WOXY thanks to their first two albums. Back in 2007, their debut album Touch Up was picked up for distribution by the Last Gang label following an earlier (and slightly different) self-release of the disc. When we started to play songs like “Neighbour” and the title track “Touch Up”, listeners began to heavily request the band and they ended up hitting #68 on our 97 Best Of 2007 countdown.

Their second full-length release, O My Heart, was released in the fall of 2008 and, this time around, the response from WOXY listeners around the globe was even stronger. As the requests and e-mails poured in to the station, we gave the record quite a bit more airplay than the first. It ended up becoming our 20th most-played release of 2008 and we began to lament the fact that the band’s touring schedule never brought them anywhere close to our neck of the woods. As soon as we started to plan a return trip to EAR studios for SXSW, we reached out to the band’s management to see if they would be making the trip too. The stars finally aligned and we were able to host the band during our week in Austin.

Sometimes a band sounds so good on record that you assume there’s a bit of studio trickery involved to make it all work. When you listen to the songs in this live performance I think you’ll recognize that the opposite is in play here. Mother Mother replicate their vocal harmonies (frequently in triplicate) so effortlessly live that it’s almost scary. It’s all the more impressive when you realize that part of those unique harmonies is the band’s newest member Jasmin Parkin who just joined the lineup in late January (and replaced original member Debra-Jean Creelman).

In the interview here, Ryan Guldemond (lead vocals/guitars) discusses how he approaches the songwriting process, the experience of touring across the U.S. with fellow Canadian rocker Sam Roberts, and the possibility of working with R&B singer Solange Knowles who tracked them down at SXSW to express her love for their music. The fact that they haven’t broken through to a wider U.S. audience is a bit of a mystery to us, but hopefully they’ll continue making music as strong as Touch Up for a very long time.

SXSW Live Session Recap – The Little Ones

Today we look back at the session from The Little Ones, which was performed during SXSW. The L.A. based five-piece brought their shimmery brand of indie pop into the studio and recorded a really great set. The band was also kind enough to be a part of our “Everybody Needs A Nurse” day party later in the week. You will hear a few choice tunes from their debut EP, Sing Song , as well as two brand new unreleased songs, (O-A and Gregory’s Chant) which are also cut out of the session and available for MP3 download below.

SXSW Live Session Recap – The Rumble Strips

The Rumble Strips were one of many UK bands that we feel have a very bright future who stopped in to EAR studios for a session with us during SXSW. The quartet is currently signed to Island Records (UK) and their debut full length is expected out this summer. The session with us was also their American radio debut!

SXSW Live Session Recap – Winterpills

While it has been a whole month since SXSW wrapped up, we are still churning out the recap posts for you here on The Futurist. Today we focus on Winterpills, a band out of the Boston area that released their debut self titled disc back in 2005. The new album was released earlier this year and the precise and haunting melodies caught our attention at WOXY.

SXSW Live Session Recap – 65daysofstatic

Another Saturday session to recap today, this one coming from the UK band 65daysofstatic. I think we were all won over after hearing their album, “One Time For All Time” here at the station and it was exciting to learn that they would be a part of our roster of performances while in Austin. The band is getting some excellent exposure overseas and we feel it is only a matter of time before the buzz heightens here in the states as well.

SXSW Lounge Act Playback

We know that we’ve spoken a lot about our sessions from Austin during SXSW, but can you blame us? We hosted 20 great bands over 5 days and then added a live, outdoor broadcast of our dayparty on top of that. Yep, that’s what we get to call “work”….

We also know that a lot of listeners didn’t get the chance to catch our sessions that we held on that Saturday (March 17th) nor could stick around for those bands whose live set started at 5pm Austin time (6p EDT). So, this Thursday starting at 5pm EDT, you can catch up on those sessions from Foals, 65daysofstatic, Cloud Cult, The Manhattan Love Suicides, Laylights, Land Of Talk, Via Audio, The Rumble Strips and more just by listening to WOXY.com. Five hours of live music, recorded as it happened on WOXY.com. No overdubs, no do-overs.

If you can’t tune in, remember that all of the SXSW sessions are available as downloadable podcasts. It was great fun and here’s a chance to sit back & listen to either a session that you missed or re-hear a favorite.

The SXSW recaps continue today with a look back at the session with Via Audio. The band is currently putting the finishing touches on their upcoming full length debut album and WOXY has been a big supporter of their work leading up to it. So it was a real treat to have them come in during their time in Austin for a live session. The album will be titled “Say Something” and was recorded with Spoon’s Jim Eno. SXSW Live Session Recap – The Manhattan Love Suicides

Saturday was a very busy day of Lounge sessions down in Austin for us. In addition to having 5 sets planned, poor Shivvy was stuck back at the hotel sick with the flu. Bryan Jay and Mike braved the storm well however, and everything went as planned. The final session of the day, and of the week for that matter, belonged to The Manhattan Love Suicides. The band from Leeds, England played some tracks from their self-titled debut as well as a new song, which you can download below.

SXSW Live Session Recap – Snowden

Snowden stopped by EAR Studios in Austin during SXSW to record a session with us. They played the opening slot on Thursday March 15th and were also kind enough to play as a part of our “Everybody Needs A Nurse” day party a couple days later. The band is still out supporting their excellent debut album “Anti- Anti”, which got plenty of spins on WOXY.com. Enjoy this session from Atlanta, Georgia’s own, Snowden. snowden1.jpg
