YellowFever is comprised of Austin natives Jennifer Moore & Adam Jones. They’ve been fixtures on the local scene for the last few years, sometimes with a third member but currently content as a duo. Jennifer’s voice recalls Stereolab’s Laetitia Sadier and their brand of art pop has been singularly unique among Austin bands. They’ve been fairly DIY, with only an EP and a few hard-to-find single releases to this point. Fortunately, the Vivian Girls made a self-titled compilation of all of the band’s recordings the first release on their new Wild World imprint in late 2009.

For our Lounge Act though, they chose to feature all new, yet to be released material. It’s possible that some or all of the songs will be included on a new record, their proper full-length debut, that the two hope to release sometime in 2010.

In December, Wingo debuted a new live lineup for Ola Podrida here in Austin with a live show at the Mohawk. With this performance, that lineup remains mostly in tact, but with a new drummer playing for the first time with the band outside of the practice space.

The band pulled into Swing House Studios in Hollywood the night before their date with Editors at The Wiltern and gave the private Lounge Acts audience of about 30 a set of music that made the hair on our collective arms stand on end.

The trio is an act that builds slowly, bubbling, lurking under the surface before rising above to absolutely slam you with sheer, brute force, proving you don’t have to wail to get your point across, and that cries of sadness and pain can sometimes make you deaf. We’ve included three songs from the set of six from this intimate event for your listening pleasure, enjoy!

They formed from the remnants of The Teeners, another Casual Victim Pile band, and have been playing together for a relatively short time. Their brand of garage punk recalls recent Matador signees Harlem, another local outfit brought to the label by Cosloy.

Aside from their appearance on the comp, Wild America only has a demo to their name, although plans for a 7″ single release is imminent. With five freshly minted tunes recorded live in the Lounge, it’s a fair bet you’ll be hearing from them again soon.

Love Collector are a four piece punk band from Austin, Texas. Chances are, most people outside of Austin had not heard of them until recently when Matador Records co-founder Gerard Cosloy put together the Casual Victim Pile compilation. The album is a collection of 19 artists that Gerard really feels captures the vibe of the current Austin music scene and gave him an opportunity to highlight some of his favorites.

Love Collector have not released a full album yet, but among the new songs you hear in this session is “First 48″, the song that was chosen to appear on the Casual Victim Pile record.

The event itself has been taking place since 1998 in Norway, finally taking permanent residence in the capitol city of Oslo in 2008. It’s a music festival by night and a conference by day, so you might say it’s a smaller, colder, Scandinavian version of SXSW, or at least it has a comparable format, minus the day parties of course. The lineup for the festival is a great batch of interesting bands, although we know most of them you won’t be familiar with, at least not yet. So to get you more acclimated, here are the bands we are most excited about seeing next week in Norway along with some of their music for you to sample.

Seabear – This 7-piece band hails from Iceland and is getting ready to release their second album, We Built A Fire, in March on the Morr label. What started out as the lo-fi solo project of Icelandic singer/multi-instrumentalist Sindri Már Sigfússon’s (aka Sin Fang Bous) has now morphed into a full on indie pop celebration. In addition to playing by:Larm, Seabear will be making their US touring debut this year during SXSW.

Oh No Ono – Quickly becoming a WOXY favorite already, Oh No Ono are one of Denmarks most promising art-pop bands. Under The Radar magazine had this to say about the band.

“The second album by this Danish five-piece is the first to be released in the U.S., and it’s about time. Oh No Ono creates fantastical, experimental pop that knows no boundaries.”

Oh No Ono’s second album, the first to be released in the US, is out now from Friendly Fire Recordings.

Serena-Maneesh – Probably the most well known act on the bill, at least to us here in the States, has got to be Serena-Maneesh. After the success of their debut album in 2006, we haven’t heard much from the band, but the timing could not be better for this showcase in their home city because Serena-Maneesh have a brand new album on the way titled No. 2 : Abyss in B Minor due out March 22nd on 4AD Records.

Casiokids – When they aren’t busy touring the UK with the likes of Hot Chip, releasing the first ever Norwegian language pop single in Great Britain or being called the “best thing to come out of Norway since Black Metal” by NME, Casiokids are a humble electro-pop collective from Bergen, Norway. Seriously, this group has alot going for it, even if you don’t understand a word they are saying.

Children And The Corpse Playing In The Streets – Despite what you have already decided this band sounds like due to their name, they really don’t sound like that. Unless of course, you guessed lo-fi indie pop that comes from two girls that have delicate harmonies to peddle, not the Norwegian Black Metal you may have inferred from the band name. Seriously, listen to this song.

diskjokke – diskjokke is the stage name for 27-year-old Norwegian producer Joachim Dyrdahl, who, along with with Prins Thomas and Lindstrøm, is a vital part of the rising Nordic electronic scene. Pitchfork labeled one of his songs “spacey electro-disco” and we agree. When it comes to dancing, the by:larm crowd should be moving to diskjokke this year.

Efterklang – We fell for Efterklang the first time we heard them, with their sweet yet sincere indie pop tunes and we were not alone. The band signed to 4AD Records in the US to release their third album, Magic Chairs this spring. The four piece have been friends since childhood and bandmates since 2000 and are primed for a North American breakout.

And there are loads more bands we are excited about and just learning about for the first time. So next week, get ready as we bring you as much and maybe more than you want to know about Oslo and the by:larm festival!

They’ve quickly become one of our favorite bands in Austin and their 10″ EP on Monofonus Press last fall earned a fair amount of airplay here at the station.

Now, they’ve got the lead track on Matador’s Casual Victim Pile: Austin 2010 compilation and are at least looking in the direction of a full-length album.

In this performance you’ll hear a few brand new tracks, a tune from their debut EP, one from the Monofonus Press 10″, and their recently released song, as featured on the Casual Victim Pile release, called “The Ghosts That Wake You.”

Will Johnson is probably best known for his role as frontman of the band Centro-Matic, who have been putting out quality albums since the mid 1990’s. In the past year or so though, Will has had his hands full with several other really interesting projects. Among them was a role as a touring member of Monsters Of Folk, where Will played drums and travelled across the world with the super group.

Will also stayed busy working on solo recordings and putting together a great record with fellow musician and friend Jason Molina. The Molina and Johnson album was put together over a couple weeks by the two prolific artists and sees them collaborating and creating some incredible songs. In this solo set with Will, we are treated to two songs from that record, one unreleased tune from an upcoming solo album and another new song that was originally written by Woody Guthrie that will be a part of an upcoming project Will is involved in along with Jay Farrar, Anders Parker and Jim James.
