SXSW 2010 Lounge Acts Preview – Friday

Another day, another great batch of live lounge acts to bring your way from SXSW 2010. We hope you have enjoyed the sessions that are already in the books and once again, we have a full slate lined up for you today.

Here is the schedule both of all bands playing in the WOXY lounge today below.

10 AM Ben Sollee & Daniel Martin Moore Ben Sollee and Daniel Martin Moore are two Kentucky songwriters that share a lot in common. In 2008, while Sollee delivered his much praised debut Learning To Bend, Moore also put out his own inaugural release Stray Age. In the midst of releasing their respective acoustic-pop debuts, Solle reached out to Moore after hearing his music on Myspace. Both are now good friends and have come together with producer and “Monster of Folk” Yim Yames to release Dear Companion. While this collaboration centers itself around the exaltation and preservation of their beloved home state, it does so without making any sacrifices. Their new songs are as emotionally affecting as they are easy on the ears and that is why WOXY is proud to present a Lounge Act featuring these two playing selections off their current release.
Ben Sollee & Daniel Martin Moore – Something, Sometime, Somewhere

12 PM Miles Kurosky Indie-pop veteran Miles Kurosky has been through quite a bit since his departure from Beulah in 2004. Following the breakup of this landmark San Francisco act, Kurosky got married, recovered from health complications, and wrote a new batch of ambitious pop gems. With his new solo-record, The Desert of Shallow Effects, on the horizon, fans can expect Kurosky to emerge from his musical hiatus stronger than ever before. WOXY is extremely excited to catch up with Kurosky this SXSW as he will be headed into our studio for another great Lounge Act performance.

2 PM The Besnard Lakes Montreal’s The Besnard Lakes were formed by married duo Jace Lasek and Olga Goreas. The group has expanded since then, and their expansive, dynamic sound reflects that growth. Their second album, The Besnard Lakes Are the Dark Horse, was recorded with guest appearances from Stars, The Dears and Godspeed You! Black Emperor/Silver Mt. Zion. It was nominated for a Polaris music prize in 2007. This year’s release, The Besnard Lakes Are the Roaring Night comes out March 9 on Jagjaguwar.

4 PM Bear in Heaven After various line-up changes, Brooklyn-based Bear In Heaven has currently settled on one that has allowed them to cultivate something that is all their own. Known for marrying billowy soft-rock melodies with anxious electronic rhythms, this four-piece creates a musical landscape likened to that of a David Lynch film. This spectacular collective is now touring behind their critically celebrated second album, Beast Rest Forth Mouth, and WOXY is incredibly excited to bring them to you live Friday March 19 at Emo’s Annex during our official SXSW showcase. Catch Bear In Heaven also in our studio for an upcoming Lounge Act performance!

SXSW 2010 Lounge Acts Preview : Tuesday

SXSW 2010 has already kicked off here in Austin, and also here in the WOXY studios. We hosted our first live session of the week yesterday with Little Dragon. It sounded great, and it’s barely the tip of the iceberg in terms of what we have in store for you this week. As we ease into the week, we have two more great bands to bring you sessions from today, and then a full slate from Wednesday through Saturday.

Tuesday, March 16

1:00 PM You, You’re Awesome Yusef Quotah and Kevin Bayer actually met each other on the WOXY message boards years ago and became show-going buddies. About a year and a half ago, they finally started making their own music, and the result is the band You, You’re Awesome. Quotah was playing around with some electronic arrangements, and when the pair went to see Holy Fuck and Do Make Say Think in concert, they had the shape of what they wanted to achieve. Their debut, You’re Getting Old, is out now and we look forward to hearing tracks from it performed in our studios during their Lounge Act session.
You, You’re Awesome – I’m Deaf & You’re Boring

2:30 PM Via Audio Brooklyn four-piece Via Audio have spent the last two years touring behind their critically acclaimed debut album Say Something. Recently, the indie-pop outfit went back into the studio with help from producer Jim Eno (from Spoon) and are ready to release their follow-up effort. Their new album — Animalore — is due out March 9th and is described by the band as being, “a collection of eccentric sounds infused with fairy tales, folklore, science fiction, romance, seduction, and adventure.” WOXY is anxious to hear Via Audio’s new material and has scheduled them to come in the week of SXSW for a special Lounge Act performance.

Lounge Act Recap – Portugal The Man

The past year has been a good one for Portugal. The Man. They released their fourth album, The Satanic Satanist and played some big festivals like Bonnaroo and Outside Lands. The band toured like crazy last year and continued to build up a great fanbase in the process.

Now they are ready to take on anything after starting off their 2010 tour with sellout shows, including two nights here in Austin. Their brand new album, American Ghetto sees the band continuing to hone their craft as they prepare to make this year an even bigger success than last. Enjoy this session with Portugal. The Man.

Lounge Act Recap – Vetiver

A year after the release of their Sub Pop debut Tight Knit, we caught up with Vetiver right as they were completing a tour with The Clientele.

Led by Andy Cabic, the band is in fine form in this performance which begins with two tracks that were featured only on a limited edition 7″ single released for Record Store Day last Spring.

In the interview, Shiv talks to Cabic about partnering up with Sub Pop, the intricacies of hitting the road when he lives in San Francisco and the rest of the band is around Brooklyn, and his production work on the upcoming album from folk legend Vashti Bunyan.

Lounge Act Recap – YellowFever

YellowFever is comprised of Austin natives Jennifer Moore & Adam Jones. They’ve been fixtures on the local scene for the last few years, sometimes with a third member but currently content as a duo. Jennifer’s voice recalls Stereolab’s Laetitia Sadier and their brand of art pop has been singularly unique among Austin bands. They’ve been fairly DIY, with only an EP and a few hard-to-find single releases to this point. Fortunately, the Vivian Girls made a self-titled compilation of all of the band’s recordings the first release on their new Wild World imprint in late 2009.

For our Lounge Act though, they chose to feature all new, yet to be released material. It’s possible that some or all of the songs will be included on a new record, their proper full-length debut, that the two hope to release sometime in 2010.

Lounge Act Recap – Ola Podrida

Texas native David Wingo had spent some time living in Brooklyn, where he recorded most of Ola Podrida’s second album Belly Of The Lion by himself at home. After the album was completed, Wingo found himself back living in Austin and the album was released last fall on Western Vinyl.

In December, Wingo debuted a new live lineup for Ola Podrida here in Austin with a live show at the Mohawk. With this performance, that lineup remains mostly in tact, but with a new drummer playing for the first time with the band outside of the practice space.

All of the tracks in this performance originally appear on Belly Of The Lion.

Future Sounds Lounge Act Recap – The Antlers

If quiet is the new loud, then The Antlers are a scream. Taking the concept album to new places, their album Hospice is so real, so raw, so incredibly personal that we haven’t heard such a painful record since Bob Dylan’s Blood On The Tracks.

The band pulled into Swing House Studios in Hollywood the night before their date with Editors at The Wiltern and gave the private Lounge Acts audience of about 30 a set of music that made the hair on our collective arms stand on end.

The trio is an act that builds slowly, bubbling, lurking under the surface before rising above to absolutely slam you with sheer, brute force, proving you don’t have to wail to get your point across, and that cries of sadness and pain can sometimes make you deaf. We’ve included three songs from the set of six from this intimate event for your listening pleasure, enjoy!

Lounge Act Recap – Sondre Lerche

We last saw Sondre Lerche in the fall of 2004 when he was touring with The Golden Republic. Since that time, he has gotten married, relocated from Norway to Brooklyn, and left his longtime label partners of EMI to join the Rounder Records family.

He had just started a month-long acoustic US tour when he dropped by our studios. In this performance, you’ll hear three tracks from his recent Heartbeat Radio along with two older tracks (including WOXY favorite “Two Way Monologue”).

Lounge Act Recap – Wild America

Add Wild America to the list of Austin up-and-comers handpicked by Matador Records’ Gerard Cosloy to appear on Casual Victim Pile: Austin 2010, the label boss’ lovingly curated compilation of some of his favorite local acts.

They formed from the remnants of The Teeners, another Casual Victim Pile band, and have been playing together for a relatively short time. Their brand of garage punk recalls recent Matador signees Harlem, another local outfit brought to the label by Cosloy.

Aside from their appearance on the comp, Wild America only has a demo to their name, although plans for a 7″ single release is imminent. With five freshly minted tunes recorded live in the Lounge, it’s a fair bet you’ll be hearing from them again soon.

Lounge Act Recap – Love Collector

Love Collector are a four piece punk band from Austin, Texas. Chances are, most people outside of Austin had not heard of them until recently when Matador Records co-founder Gerard Cosloy put together the Casual Victim Pile compilation. The album is a collection of 19 artists that Gerard really feels captures the vibe of the current Austin music scene and gave him an opportunity to highlight some of his favorites.

Love Collector have not released a full album yet, but among the new songs you hear in this session is “First 48″, the song that was chosen to appear on the Casual Victim Pile record.
