From Auckland, New Zealand, Cut Off Your Hands have been on a rapid rise since forming in 2006, playing high profile gigs like the Big Day Out, SXSW, and the Camden Crawl. Their debut full-length, You & I, was recorded in London with in-demand producer Bernard Butler, and released in October 2008. Their brand of indie-pop contains echoes of fellow Kiwis from the seminal Flying Nun roster such as The Clean, The Bats, and The Chills.
Somewhat unusual for an overseas band, COYH has been touring the US rather extensively over the past year. They chat with Mike about playing in some smaller cities and how much that differs from playing in a place like New York or a festival like SXSW.

You & I
I hope you have enjoyed taking a closer look at some of the bands playing the WOXY.com stage at this years Monolith Festival from our previews. Of course, the entire lineup is great, but we hope you decide to spend a little time at the WOXY.com stage as well. Here is the schedule for the WOXY.com stage for this weekend….
If you have been around here very long, I don’t have to tell you much about Jukebox The Ghost. But just in case you have not, and are on the fence about how to start your Sunday at Monolith this weekend, well take this into account.
Jukebox The Ghost are a three piece from Washington D.C. who joined us in the lounge back in January of this year. Since then they have gone on to release an excellent debut album called Let Live & Let Ghosts. Shiv called them one of his favorite musical discoveries of 2007 and we have been nothing but impressed with how these guys are progressing. Get a sample of what Jukebox The Ghost sounds like below with some free downloads from their session with us in the lounge.
Port O’Brien started three years ago as the duo (and couple) of Van Pierszalowski and Cambria Goodwin. The band have expanded in recent years to a 5-piece and this year released an album that we have been enjoying ever since it arrived. All We Could Do Was Sing caught us by pleasant surprise and displays the bands tact for catchy hooks and captivating instrumentation.
Port O’Brien have been out on the road all summer long and will be playing on the WOXY.com stage at the Monolith Festival this weekend in Denver.
Be sure to stop by and catch their set, which is scheduled to go off at 2pm on Saturday September 13th.
The 2008 Monolith Festival kicks off this weekend! And one of the many great bands taking the WOXY.com stage are The Whigs. The Athens, Georgia based rockers gave us a great sample of their high energy sound earlier this year during a Lounge session and are a great band to catch live.
The Whigs have been touring the hell out of their excellent sophomore album, Mission Control, and have attracted a bunch of new fans in the process. Mission Control combines some of your favorite things about American rock music and injects The Whigs signature brand of hard hitting fun. This set is one you should not miss.
The Whigs are playing the WOXY.com stage Sunday Sept 14th @ 5:50pm.
Once you get the fact out of the way that Liam Finn is Neil Finn’s son, and the fact that he was a full time touring member of Dad’s band (Crowded House) you can settle in and enjoy his excellent solo debut album. And not that being the son of a famous musician is a bad thing, but not every one of them can match the talent of their fathers.
That is certainly not the case with Liam however, whose album I’ll Be Lightning was a pleasant surprise for all of us here at WOXY.com when it was released earlier this year on the Yep Roc label. Finn truly nails the “folk-rock” sound on the record, and we hope you are as excited as we are to see him live at Red Rocks during Monolith.
Enjoy Liam performing his song “Second Chance” on Letterman.
Liam Finn plays the WOXY.com stage at Monolith on Saturday Sept 13th at 5:50pm.
The 2008 Monolith Festival is just a week and a half away and we are really excited about the bands playing the WOXY.com stage this year. I will do my best to preview several of the bands taking the stage next weekend over the course of the next week here on The Futurist. First up, White Denim.
When you come from Austin, Texas, it is easy to get lost in the shuffle with all the great music that surrounds America’s best live music scene. But White Denim have set themselves apart before their debut full length is even out! The band have released a couple of great EP’s and have their debut full length on the way this November as well.
Bryan Jay, Mike and Shiv are headed out to Colorado this weekend for the first annual MONOLITH FESTIVAL. It’s happening at Red Rocks outside of Denver and it’s gonna be a great time. If you are headed to the festival in person, come say hello at our WOXY.COM stage inside the lower level of the Red Rocks Vistors Center!
We are going to be broadcasting live from Monolith on Friday and Saturday with all of the bands playing on the WOXY.COM stage!

As with any live event, times are approximate, the lineup is subject to change, and the broadcast may contain strong language.
Another local band that will be taking the WOXY.com stage at this weekend’s Monolith Festival is Hot IQ’s out of the Denver area. The trio released an excellent EP early this year called The Dangling Modifier EP and we had the pleasure of welcoming them into the lounge this summer as well.
Check out the full session and one unreleased song that the band played during their time with us here in Cincinnati. And of course, get ready for lots of new tunes during their set at Monolith this weekend.
Today, as the Monolith Festival gets closer and closer, we focus in on a band that is local to the Denver area, where Monolith is being held. Cat-A-Tac are currently supporting their debut full length album, Past Lies and Former Lives.
The four piece have also been into the WOXY.com lounge, although it was way back in January of 2006, be sure to check out their session below for a preview of what is to come out at Monolith.
