The Big Ears Festival in Knoxville is getting closer and closer. The event takes place March 26-28 and if you have not already thrown your hat into the ring for our contest, you should do that now. We are pretty excited about the festival and wanted to give you a proper preview of some of the artists playing this year. So, in case you missed it, you can now stream our hour long special on demand! The show features music from the likes of Joanna Newsom, St. Vincent, The National, Clogs, Dirty Projectors and more, all of whom are playing Big Ears this year.
Even though right now it seems like the only thing going on in the music world is the upcoming SXSW festival, we assure you, there is more. And the “more” I write about in this case is the upcoming Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, Tennessee. It takes place the weekend after SXSW, and looks to be one of the best lineups I have seen for a small festival announced this year.
A quick look at the lineup and you too will agree that this is like a who’s who of hot upcoming artists right now. And on top of that, you get to see them in a couple of amazing old theaters and not out in the desert at Coachella or in the hot summer heat among thousands at other festivals.
Still not sure? Here are just some of the artists on the bill. Joanna Newsom, St. Vincent, The National, Dirty Projectors, Vampire Weekend, The XX, jj, Clogs (feat. Sufjan Stevens and members of The National), My Brightest Diamond, Gang Gang Dance and more. Seriously, there is more. So toss out any ideas you might have about festivals as a whole, and what you might know or not know about Knoxville, Tennessee and jump on board for this years Big Ears festival. This is the year it goes from being a big secret to one of the most talked about festivals around.
Also this year, WOXY is a proud media partner of the Big Ears festival and wants you to go and check out the whole thing. Thats right, we have an Inner Ear Pass (which gives you priority access to all Big Ears Festival events…including all concerts as well as talks, workshops, receptions, and other special events) which is a 250$ value to give away right here on The Futurist! It’s a big prize, but thats just how generous we are.
So enter to win a Inner Ear pass to the Big Ears Festival in Knoxville below, the contest runs from now until March 12th, good luck! (more…)
You may know comedian Aziz Ansari from MTV’s “Human Giant” or his current role on the NBC sitcom “Parks & Recreation”, but over the last few years, he’s also become on the best stand-up comedians in the
country. His first stand-up special Intimate Moments For A Sensual Evening recently aired on Comedy Central and has now been released on cd & dvd.
This hour-long performance is one of the funniest things I’ve seen in a very long time. Aziz covers a myriad of topics, but hits his stride when he tells stories about harassing his younger cousin Harris on Facebook and the night he went out on the town with Kanye West.
Here’s a clip from the special where Aziz decides to have a little fun with the employees at his local CVS.
Thanks to our friends at The Syndicate and Comedy Central, we have 5 copies of the Intimate Moments For A Sensual Evening dvd to give away! It features the full, uncensored hour-long special (along with a bonus encore performance from Aziz’s “Funny People” character RAAAAAAAANDY) and also a bonus 30-minute performance that was filmed at the Upright Citizen’s Brigade in Los Angeles last fall.
If you would like to win a copy of the dvd, just send an e-mail to woxycontests at gmail dot com and put Aziz in your subject line for a chance to win. Please include your mailing address in the body of the e-mail
so that we can ship your dvd to you if you win. We’ll accept entries thru February 10, 2010 and notify the winners via e-mail.

Another week, and another great show to put our name behind here in Austin. This time around, WOXY and our friends from Austinist are proud to be presenting The Mountain Goats and Final Fantasy at Antones on November 18th. In addition to having The New Yorker magazine refer to him as “America’s best non-hip-hop lyricist”, John Darnielle has released another critically acclaimed album this year titled The Life Of The World To Come that is already popping up on several “best of” lists as we round out 2009.
Final Fantasy is the moniker that Owen Pallet uses to release his solo work. Owen has released two album and has plans for a new one that is slated for release in early 2010. In addition to his work as Final Fantasy, Owen is also well known for his instrumental contributions and string arrangements for bands like Arcade Fire, Grizzly Bear, Beirut and even The Pet Shop Boys. Most recently, Pallet played violin on the latest Mountain Goats album, part of the reason behind this tour pairing.
If you are a fan of one or both bands, or just want to get out and see some great live music, send us an email to enter our contest to win tickets. Title your email, “Mountain Goats” and send it to woxycontests at gmail dot com. The show is Wednesday November 18th and we will be accepting entries until the day before the show. However, this show could easily sell out, so if you would prefer to buy some tickets, you can do so now right here.
So good luck and even if you are not a winner, we hope to see you out at the show!
If you are a fan of The Feelies, you probably already know that the band reunited last fall and have been playing here and there since then, much to the delight of their fans. Their most recent appearance was last month when they performed Crazy Rhythms live in its entirety as part of the All Tomorrow’s Parties-curated Don’t Look Back series In addition to the exciting live appearances, Bar None records has re-issued two of their classic albums on vinyl and CD this year, and we want to give you a chance to win them.
That is right, we have copies of both Crazy Rhythms and The Good Earth up for grabs on vinyl and CD. To enter the contest, send an email to woxy contests at gmail dot com. Type “Feelies” in the subject line and you are registered to win!

There is a brand new venue just north of Austin in Cedar Park that recently opened up for business. And next week, one of our favorite bands (and one of our favorite up and coming acts as well) will be taking the stage there to help open the new place.
Liam Finn and Eliza Jane will be opening up the evening, fresh off the release of their latest EP, Champagne Seashells. And your headliner for the night is Wilco, returning to the Austin area for the first time since their appearance at ACL in 2007.
And we want to send you and a friend to the show! To qualify for the tickets, send an email to woxy contests at gmail dot come with the subject line reading “Wilco.” Within the email, tell us what your favorite Wilco album is and why. We will select a winner in the middle of next week, so keep checking back here and listening to WOXY for details!
This event will be Free! To RSVP, for band updates, and to learn more details, keep checking: Live at Seaholm
WOXY is proud to announce Broken Social Scene, performing live at the Seaholm Power Plant on Cesar Chavez Friday, October 2nd. The show is completely free, and will start at 10 pm on Friday after ACL has closed for the evening and continue until 4 am. 4,000 people will be granted access to the event.
The decommissioned Seaholm Power Plant has been virtually out of reach for all Austinites since its construction in the 1950’s. For years, the Art Deco building has held a great deal of mystery to passersby due to its looming presence and restricted access. But things will change in October as Rare Magazine has been given the keys to the Seaholm and will host the first large scale public event to take place at the power plant on the nights of October 2nd and 3rd. WOXY is proud to present the first night with one of our favorite bands. VIP guests and attending artists will encounter an unrivaled experience, as the industrial mammoth is turned into a lounge and green room, complete with DJ’s, dance floor, and bar.
Broken Social Scene hail from Canada and their 19 person ensemble (including Justin Peroff, Charles Spearin, Andrew Whiteman, Sam Goldberg, Jason Collett, David Newfeld, Leslie Feist, Emily Haines, James Shaw, Evan Cranley, Amy Millan and more) will undoubtedly put on a show to remember at this unique space. Headed by Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning, the group’s atmospheric pop has wooed fans and critics alike since 1999. Their 2002 release You Forgot It In People and 2005’s self-titled work are both benchmarks in the indie music scene.
CONTEST CLOSED THANKS FOR ENTERING!****** UPDATE*** WOXY wants to hook you up with a VIP pass to this show! To qualify for the contest, send an email to woxy contests at gmail dot come with the subject line reading “BSS” and you will be entered to win. Keep listening to WOXY and checking here for updates!
It’s no secret that we’ve been enjoying Let It Beep, the sophomore full length from Knoxville’s Royal Bangs. They’ll be supported by Tigercity.

We’re giving away a pair of tickets to this show … send us an email to woxycontests at gmail dot com and use the subject line “Royal Bangs”. Leave us your full name and we’ll notify you if you’re our lucky winner.
