One of the things we love bringing you the most here at WOXY is our Lounge Acts series. So it’s been one of the more difficult things during our move to Austin, Texas to have some time away from music in the lounge. Well, we are happy to announce that all is finally changing starting this week.
Thats right, Lounge Acts return this week on WOXY.com and we have a really nice slate of performances already set up for you. First up tomorrow is a session with Tennessee’s Royal Bangs followed by legendary rockers Mission Of Burma on Wednesday.
Then, to finish out the week, we have Thao with The Get Down Stay Down on Thursday and Elvis Perkins in Dearland on Friday. How’s that for a comeback? We hope you are as excited as we are and will tune in for our first set of sessions from our new home here in Austin. See the schedule below.
Tues Nov 17 Royal Bangs 3:30p ET / 2:30p CT
Weds Nov 18 Mission Of Burma 12:30p ET / 11:30a CT
Thurs Nov 19 Thao with the Get Down Stay Down 2p ET / 1p CT
Friday Nov 20 Elvis Perkins In Dearland 3p ET / 2p CT

WOXY is proud to be a sponsor of this year’s Carnival-O-Pizza, celebrating Home Slice’s 4th Anniversary. On Saturday, December 5 at Home Slice on South Congress, we’ll be there for free entry to games, carnival-style booths, live music, raffles, break dancers, contests* (Pizza Tossing, Extreme Pizza Eating, Pizza Box Folding, and “Hands on an Eggplant Sub”), beer, pizza and much more! We’ll be on-hand introducing Austin to our independent radio programming and bright smiling faces.
All proceeds from the event go to Austin Pets Alive, Austin’s non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to promoting and providing resources, education and programs needed to eliminate the killing of companion animals in Austin. For more information, visit Austin Pets Alive online.
Home Slice is an independent neighborhood pizza joint serving authentic NYC-style pie. They’ve been praised by everyone from Rachael Ray to Texas Monthly. They’re great supporters of live music in Austin and help us feed bands at WOXY regularly for our Lounge Act Meet & Greets, so come on out and show your support – it goes to a good cause!
We’re proud to be sponsoring the carnival and look forward to seeing you there! For more information, visit Home Slice Pizza online.
We’ll be sponsoring the The Hands on an Eggplant Sub Contest (based on the Hands on a Hard Body contest) — a challenge that once lasted 27 hours, ending in a tie that had to be broken with Home Slice trivia. Check out the blog of Seth, last year’s winner of free pizza for a year.
*To sign up for the contests, stop by Home Slice and fill out a contest card.

On four stages in two days, Fun Fest will span genres to bring us bands like Ratatat, Destroyer, GZA, Danzig, 7 Seconds, HEALTH, Why?, Crystal Castles, of Montreal, Shonen Knife, Death, Atlas Sound, Broadcast, Lucero and many (many) more. That’s just for starters: there will be on-site shopping, comedy, art, food and a skate ramp at the park this year, keeping fans young and old entertained during what’s usually one of the mildest weekends of the year.
We’re excited to be partnering with Transmission Entertainment to bring you all the latest news, updates, after party information and more regarding the festival. Between now and November 7, WOXY will be spinning the artists, offering ticket giveaways, breaking news and being your one-stop-shop for news about the fest. Follow us on Twitter and Facebook for all the updates that don’t make it to the Futurist.

The latest edition of Soundcheck Magazine is on newsstands and is also available as a PDF.
This issue includes interviews with Ume, Mutemath, Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, The Twilight Sad, T-Bird & The Breaks and also includes tons of photos from recent Austin shows like U2, Muse, Pearl Jam, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Phoenix, Them Crooked Vultures, The Dead Weather, Black Crowes, Wilco, Semi Precious Weapons, Ra Ra Riot, Sunny Day Real Estate, The Walkmen, Avett Brothers, Flogging Molly and The Felice Brothers. There’s also a nice recap of ACL 2009.
Elliot Cole’s talk with Lauren Larson of Ume is the WOXY pick in this issue. “I’m an unlikely candidate to be some sort of rocker woman,” she tells Cole. He’s right on the money, though, responding “She is soft-spoken and articulate, inoffensive but direct. She’s also dead-on in her analysis: with her long, blonde hair; petite frame; and infectious, upbeat spirit, she doesn’t make for the typecast rockstar. She’s far too intelligent, far too jovial, and far too composed to be the same girl that, night-in and night-out, is known for thrashing around on stage like a crazed banshee.”
Sounds like the Lauren we know and love! Don’t miss the latest issue of Soundcheck Magazine, and while you’re at their site, stream WOXY and grab our iPhone app.

WOXY is proud to present New York’s Elvis Perkins in Dearland, coming to the Parish Room on November 11. He’ll be supported by AA Bondy.
Perkins and his troupe will be supporting their October 20 release, the Doomsday EP and the self-titled full length from earlier this year. We’re giving you a chance to win tickets to the show – but that’s not all! Email us at woxycontests @ gmail.com, and you’ll be entered to win a tour of WOXY’s new studio as well as front row seats for Elvis Perkins’ Lounge Act here in Austin. We’ll also send you to the show at the Parish on us. Enter today!
Of the new songs, Perkins says, “We call this thing The Doomsday EP for obvious reasons, and its middle name to which it also answers is The EP of the Id. Being drawn to the many faces of the American strain it seems we have more or less subconsciously produced a collection speaking to/and or from several of them at once. It’s a document of impulses sleeping egos and their superiors let pass to tape. I myself didn’t know what these songs sounded like in the hands of EPID until they were processed and played back. You have a song that arrived like the rest of us by boat, a selection from the Sacred Harp, a rock ‘n roll heralding the eternal advent of rock ‘n roll, an ode to the soul of the undead and, finally (and firstly), two takes on a single song called Doomsday, one which comes from our March release and the other which leans in the direction of its original conception as something of a gospel number . And here they all are, risen from their cribs and graves, under one moonlight while their folks and undertakers look the other way.”
For more information, visit the Parish web site. Tickets available here for $14.
Thanks to Home Slice Pizza and Sweet Leaf Tea, the winners will get lunch with the band and some delicious tea to wash it down!

You’ve probably noticed that here at WOXY, we’re big fans of Austin trio White Denim. We’ve been spinning their upcoming Downtown release, Fits, for a couple of months now. In October, the band will be at the Mohawk on Red River to celebrate the release and get some local love before hitting the road with Brazos. Before that, they’ll be in our studios doing a guest dj set with Shiv.
Fits is their third full-length. It continues the thread of rambling guitar rock that we’ve seen on Workout Holiday and Exposion, but rambles in a more succinct way. James Petralli has learned how to use dozens of ideas in one song without ever forcing an unwilling epic. The tunes are to the point: and the rhythm section proves its worth by keeping up with all the manic mood changes their frontman delivers. Don’t be mistaken, however, in thinking that Steve Terebecki’s bass playing and Josh Block’s drumming exist just for support — both players lock horns with each other and the guitar (sometimes looped) throughout, picking up and discarding hundreds of moments that tease and tickle the listener. There’s some Kinks, some Beefheart, some Allman Brothers and some Zeppelin here, but there’s also something totally magical and endlessly rocking that comes from the trio when they’re together. Sample some tunes at Lala and watch the video for “I Start to Run”.
The show is Saturday, October 24 at the Mohawk (get tickets here) and the guest dj set is Friday, October 23 at 2 p.m. Tune in and email your requests to dj@woxy.com.
