Ever since we did a session with them last year during SXSW, we have been keeping tabs on The Answering Machine. The UK band dropped a great single for their upcoming debut album recently, and we have been giving it alot of airplay, hope you are digging it too. And now, the video for that song, “Cliffer” is available, watch it below and get ready for the debut album from Heist Or Hit Records very soon.
WOXY.com are proud sponsors of the Amplify: New Music series each month at Schubas in Chicago. This Friday night you’ve got Aqueduct, The Foundry Field Recordings, and Light Pollution taking the Schubas stage for a 21+ show and we want to send a few Chicago listeners out to the show. For regular folk, it’s $10 to get in, but we’ll be drawing 2 winners who will get put on the guestlist for a pair of tickets on us!
You have until 5pm eastern on Thursday, February 26th to enter. Just send an e-mail to woxycontests @ gmail dot com and include your full name (as it appears on your ID) so we can slap you on the list if you win. We will notify winners via e-mail on Thursday evening and all you have to do is show up with a friend and enjoy the show.
Carve out some time in your day today for another great band making a stop in the WOXY.com lounge. The Deep Vibration hail from Nashville, Tennessee and recently released their debut EP, Veracruz, which is a great roots rock that should jump start your afternoon.
Be sure to listen at about 4:30pm ET this afternoon for the set with The Deep Vibration!
Our Lounge Act schedule is getting ready to ramp up, and it starts today when Ben Sollee joins us in the studio for an afternoon lounge set. Ben hails from Louisville, Kentucky and released his debut album last year, Learning To Bend.
Ben is a very talented songwriter and cellist and we are excited to welcome him into the lounge today. If you aren’t familiar with Ben yet, check out this tune Ben did with fellow Louisville musician Jim James of My Morning Jacket below to get yourself ready before the set today, which is scheduled to go live at about 3:30pm ET.
You know what Twitter is right? Well, unless you are living under a social media rock these days, it is hard not to at least be aware of it. We here at WOXY.com are certainly not the Future Of Social Media, but we do our best to keep up with how the kids are communicating and are really starting to dig this Twitter thing.
So now, you can follow all three of the DJ’s (and they might even follow you back).
Some of you may know that the Minnesota collective Cloud Cult has two painters as part of the band. During live performances, the two (one of which is singer Craig Minowa’s wife, Connie) set up an easel on stage and create a new painting from scratch. The band then auctions it off to an audience member at the end of the show. In fact, we found out firsthand that their painting isn’t confined to playing in front of a paying crowd, when they painted this owl for us during a session at SXSW two years ago. (Figuring it difficult to transport back to Cincinnati, we donated it to EAR Studios with their blessing.)
So, we were happily surprised to receive a package from the band last week containing a painting from the cardboard sleeve of The Meaning of 8 CD for studio. The note enclosed said:
Hi WOXY.com Folks,
Just thought we’d tell you all how much we appreciate what you do and what you’ve done for us! We’ve been happy to spread the word about WOXY! Thanks for working with us and please accept this “Meaning of 8” limited edition print as a thank you from us. Hope to see you all sometime soon.
The Top 100 Tee is back, this time featuring our most played artists of 2008. Two color design on a short sleeve, classic black, fitted tee and hand-screened right here in Ohio by Wire and Twine.
Since we know the recession is putting the pinch on, they’re only $18 this time around. This is another pre-order – we take everyone’s orders first, print shirts to order, then ship ‘em in March – so make sure to place your order before February 28th!
We had a great time being involved with the 2008 MidPoint Music Festival here in Cincinnati, and now it is time to start thinking about the 2009 installment. Once again, our friends at City Beat are taking the reigns, and have some suprises up their sleeve this year.
But first off, its time for the bands to submit their applications! Yep, apps are already being accepted for this years festival, which is slated for September 24-26. Here is an exciting blurb about what is coming up this year…
MidPoint Music Festival 2009 has expanded by adding several new stages to keep up with the growing MPMF audience and the increasing quality of MPMF submissions. MPMF2009 intends to showcase the most performances of it’s eight year history.
If you hear the words “instrumental rock” and “Austin, TX” in the same sentence, it’s pretty hard not to reference Explosions In The Sky. After all, the band has become well known in the past few years for their anthemic brand of post-rock. But forget what you know about Austin and Instrumental Rock, because The Calm Blue Sea are fully prepared to change that.
While they may get grouped together with EIS often because of reasons already stated, The Calm Blue Sea do more than stand up on their own feet on their debut self titled album. The more appropriate term you should be hearing or reading when the band is described is “beautiful”, because that is the word I could not get out of my mind when listening to the soaring tunes on this record.
Providing the perfect backdrop for a film soundtrack or whatever you might be doing at the time, this album is not only atmospheric and at times ambient, but flat out rocks in places as well. Be prepared for deep reaching epic songs from this 6 song album, all of which clock out in the 7-9 minutes range (with one exception). The highs and lows are equally intriguing on the album, building from an area of gentle tones to a full out post-rock epic.
Keep an eye on The Calm Blue Sea, 2009 could be a great year for these guys.
I’ll get you started with this video of the band performing their song, “Literal” live…
