Grab your October edition of Austin Monthly, where you’ll find (on page 40) a really complimentary piece about WOXY and our history.
P.F. Wilson starts with Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man and covers us all the way to the present, tracking our ups and downs with humor and admiration. It’s really a wonderful piece, and one we’re proud to say represents us and our rich history (and future!) quite comprehensively. Our favorite part?
“If WOXY and new owner Future Sounds get their formula right, the station could emerge as a blueprint for the future of radio in an era of on-demand downloads and further solidify Austin’s place as the heart of independent music worldwide.”
Couldn’t have said it better ourselves! Friend Austin Monthly on Facebook and Twitter.
A Place to Bury Strangers might be the only touring band keeping the earplug industry in business. Their shoe-gazing, wall-of-sound live show is something to behold, and their albums aren’t far off that mark, either.
Sunday night, WOXY is proud to present A Place to Bury Strangers — fresh off the release of their latest, Exploding Head — at the Mohawk. The album was recorded by Andy Smith (Paul Simon, David Bowie) in Brooklyn at the band’s own Death By Audio studios. The first single “In Your Heart” is out now and includes remixes from Vince Clarke and Cereal Spiller as and the exclusive B-side “Strictly Looks.” They’ll be joined by Darker My Love and All the Saints.
The New York-based trio, led by guitar and pedal wizard Oliver Ackermann, blend mind-altering shoegaze, space rock and psych, offering dense odes to the axe. Recent years have been kind to the group: they’ve shared the stage with Jesus & Mary Chain, Brian Jonestown Massacre and Nine Inch Nails, been lauded by Pitchfork, and signed to Mute Records. All the while, Ackermann continues to work at his Death By Audio pedal company, creating custom pedals for bands like Wilco, Lightning Bolt, My Bloody Valentine and U2. Not bad for a young rock’n'roller.
Future Sounds and WOXY.COM have teamed up on 4 nights of showcases at EXIT/INN and THE END at the 2009 Next Big Nashville conference beginning on October 7th – 11th.
Keeping true to our reputations, FS and WOXY have hand-picked artists that we’ve either supported previously or look forward to discovering for the first time over the course of the week at two great venues. Phosphorescent promises to drop Willie Nelson on you in an all new angle, while The Black Angels deliver Velvet Underground circa 1968 darkness, and the talented David Vandervelde makes you want to break out your T. Rex albums all over again. Up and comers like Other Girls, Bear IN Heaven and The Young Republic provide a glimpse of the future.

WOXY is proud to announce Broken Social Scene, performing live at the Seaholm Power Plant on Cesar Chavez Friday, October 2nd. The show is completely free, and will start at 10 pm on Friday after ACL has closed for the evening and continue until 4 am. 4,000 people will be granted access to the event.
The decommissioned Seaholm Power Plant has been virtually out of reach for all Austinites since its construction in the 1950’s. For years, the Art Deco building has held a great deal of mystery to passersby due to its looming presence and restricted access. But things will change in October as Rare Magazine has been given the keys to the Seaholm and will host the first large scale public event to take place at the power plant on the nights of October 2nd and 3rd. WOXY is proud to present the first night with one of our favorite bands. VIP guests and attending artists will encounter an unrivaled experience, as the industrial mammoth is turned into a lounge and green room, complete with DJ’s, dance floor, and bar.
Broken Social Scene hail from Canada and their 19 person ensemble (including Justin Peroff, Charles Spearin, Andrew Whiteman, Sam Goldberg, Jason Collett, David Newfeld, Leslie Feist, Emily Haines, James Shaw, Evan Cranley, Amy Millan and more) will undoubtedly put on a show to remember at this unique space. Headed by Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning, the group’s atmospheric pop has wooed fans and critics alike since 1999. Their 2002 release You Forgot It In People and 2005’s self-titled work are both benchmarks in the indie music scene.
CONTEST CLOSED THANKS FOR ENTERING!****** UPDATE*** WOXY wants to hook you up with a VIP pass to this show! To qualify for the contest, send an email to woxy contests at gmail dot come with the subject line reading “BSS” and you will be entered to win. Keep listening to WOXY and checking here for updates!
Yes, we moved. Yes, we miss you. We’re making it all right, though, as in coming weeks we revive Local Lixx (Cincinnati and Austin editions) and take up a residency at Stubb’s here in Austin showcasing our favorite Texas-based acts.
So, since we’re sure we’ve only crashed into the very tip of the iceberg, we’re calling for all Texas-based bands to send us their records. Our new mailing address is 2130 S. Congress Ave., Austin, TX 78704 and we’re taking everything. In the midwest? Same address – the Cincinnati edition of Local Lixx will still be serving you right.
Stay tuned for more details on our residency and the return of Local Lixx! Want to know faster than anyone else? Subscribe to our newsletter on the home page under “Stay In the Loop”.
We had a fantastic time at our party Sunday night, and it was a success in no small part thanks to all of you. We met Ohio transplants who had been listening to us for years, locals who are just finding us now, and everyone in between. We had a blast — and we hope you did too!
Thanks again to Waterloo Records, Ruby’s BBQ, Scoot Inn, Austin Visitors & Convention Bureau, Hole in the Roof and the bands (TV Torso, Black Before Red, Martin Crane and English Teeth) for helping us throw such a great party. Check out more pictures from the evening at Austinist.
There’s also an interview with Joe at the Onion’s AV Club to check out — see how he does with his Austin Orientation.
We’re moving next week, and when the truck is unloaded, everything in its right place and regular broadcasting back to normal, we’ll take Labor Day weekend to celebrate.
If you’re in Austin, please join us Sunday, September 6 at the Scoot Inn for our party. We’ll have live music from Black Before Red (members of Okkervil River and Shearwater), TV Torso (new SOUND Team project), Martin Crane (of Brazos) and English Teeth. We’ll also have DJ Polecat spinning his favorite hits WOXY Vintage-style all evening, in between BBQ, Tito’s & Sweet Leaf and beer.
The Breeders are starting their latest tour this Wednesday night at the Southgate House. Before they go host a meet & greet with our friends over at Shake It Records from 3:30-4:30, they’re going to drop by our studios to chat with Shiv and give away a few pairs of tickets to the show. You’ll have a chance to call in and win a spot on the band’s guest list while Kim & Kelley are here, so be listening around 2pm on today. Check out all the tour dates over at Breeders Digest!
Jack White’s new band, The Dead Weather, will grab WOXY’s controls for two exclusive DJ Sets both Monday and Tuesday at 1pm. He’ll be joined by bandmates Alison Mosshart (The Kills), Dean Fertita (QOTSA) and Cincinnati’s own Jack Lawrence (Greenhornes, Raconteurs) and will be completely in charge: spinning tunes, talking, and maybe even previewing music from their new Horehound album. So tell a buddy, bring a friend, ‘cuz you won’t here this anywhere but on WOXY.com.
