WOXY Presents: Elvis Perkins In Dearland

3525160611_3faf359c3eWOXY is proud to present New York’s Elvis Perkins in Dearland, coming to the Parish Room on November 11.

Perkins and his troupe will be supporting their October 20 release, the Doomsday EP and the self-titled full length from earlier this year.

Of the new songs, Perkins says, “We call this thing The Doomsday EP for obvious reasons, and its middle name to which it also answers is The EP of the Id. Being drawn to the many faces of the American strain it seems we have more or less subconsciously produced a collection speaking to/and or from several of them at once. It’s a document of impulses sleeping egos and their superiors let pass to tape. I myself didn’t know what these songs sounded like in the hands of EPID until they were processed and played back. You have a song that arrived like the rest of us by boat, a selection from the Sacred Harp, a rock ‘n roll heralding the eternal advent of rock ‘n roll, an ode to the soul of the undead and, finally (and firstly), two takes on a single song called Doomsday, one which comes from our March release and the other which leans in the direction of its original conception as something of a gospel number . And here they all are, risen from their cribs and graves, under one moonlight while their folks and undertakers look the other way.”

For more information, visit the Parish web site. Tickets available here for $14.

White Denim Guest DJ Set: October 23 @ 2 pm

l_c630182e0a174742a887ff82198866e4You’ve probably noticed that here at WOXY, we’re big fans of Austin trio White Denim. We’ve been spinning their upcoming Downtown release, Fits, for a couple of months now. In October, the band will be at the Mohawk on Red River to celebrate the release and get some local love before hitting the road with Brazos. Before that, they’ll be in our studios doing a guest dj set with Shiv.

Fits is their third full-length. It continues the thread of rambling guitar rock that we’ve seen on Workout Holiday and Exposion, but rambles in a more succinct way. James Petralli has learned how to use dozens of ideas in one song without ever forcing an unwilling epic. The tunes are to the point: and the rhythm section proves its worth by keeping up with all the manic mood changes their frontman delivers. Don’t be mistaken, however, in thinking that Steve Terebecki’s bass playing and Josh Block’s drumming exist just for support — both players lock horns with each other and the guitar (sometimes looped) throughout, picking up and discarding hundreds of moments that tease and tickle the listener. There’s some Kinks, some Beefheart, some Allman Brothers and some Zeppelin here, but there’s also something totally magical and endlessly rocking that comes from the trio when they’re together. Sample some tunes at Lala and watch the video for “I Start to Run”.

The show is Saturday, October 24 at the Mohawk (get tickets here) and the guest dj set is Friday, October 23 at 2 p.m. Tune in and email your requests to dj@woxy.com.

WOXY Presents: Art Brut @ the Mohawk Sunday Night [Free Tickets]

ArtBrut2On Sunday night, WOXY presents south London’s finest outside art rockers, Art Brut.

In 2005, the group released their debut, Bang Bang Rock & Roll, demonstrating a real feeling and enthusiasm that most indie rock bands performing at the time could only dream of. They followed it up in 2007 with It’s a Bit Complicated, a generally well-received sophomore effort. This year’s Art Brut vs. Satan continues down the raucous, angular path the band began on, and expands on their flexibility. The group found a mentor in producer Frank Black, who humbled lead singer Eddie Argos. “It was amazing, I was so glad when he agreed to do it. I thought I would be intimidated, because it’s Black Francis you know? But it wasn’t, it was amazing. He picked us up at the airport in his car, and he’s just such a friendly enthusiastic man. It’s hard to be intimidated by him, really, as he’s just a good person.”

The band has been on a whirlwind tour of the U.S. since mid-October, and they’ll keep going until November 15, when they’ll end their trip at New York’s Bowery Ballroom. Princeton open, touring in support of their latest, Cocoon of Love, in stores now.

Buy tickets ($12) here, or send an email to woxycontests @ gmail dot com with subject line “art brut” to be entered to win a pair on us.

FFF09_bannerWe’ve only been here a month, but we’ve already learned that Austin doesn’t mess around when it comes to live music. There’s events for the music-lover happening year ’round, from sidewalk performances to arena concerts. WOXY in Austin Monthly

n64015573901_830Grab your October edition of Austin Monthly, where you’ll find (on page 40) a really complimentary piece about WOXY and our history.

P.F. Wilson starts with Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man and covers us all the way to the present, tracking our ups and downs with humor and admiration. It’s really a wonderful piece, and one we’re proud to say represents us and our rich history (and future!) quite comprehensively. Our favorite part?

“If WOXY and new owner Future Sounds get their formula right, the station could emerge as a blueprint for the future of radio in an era of on-demand downloads and further solidify Austin’s place as the heart of independent music worldwide.”

Couldn’t have said it better ourselves! Friend Austin Monthly on Facebook and Twitter.

WOXY Presents: A Place to Bury Strangers Sunday @ Mohawk

2776106940_d19621f1abA Place to Bury Strangers might be the only touring band keeping the earplug industry in business. Their shoe-gazing, wall-of-sound live show is something to behold, and their albums aren’t far off that mark, either.

Sunday night, WOXY is proud to present A Place to Bury Strangers — fresh off the release of their latest, Exploding Head — at the Mohawk. The album was recorded by Andy Smith (Paul Simon, David Bowie) in Brooklyn at the band’s own Death By Audio studios. The first single “In Your Heart” is out now and includes remixes from Vince Clarke and Cereal Spiller as and the exclusive B-side “Strictly Looks.” They’ll be joined by Darker My Love and All the Saints.

The New York-based trio, led by guitar and pedal wizard Oliver Ackermann, blend mind-altering shoegaze, space rock and psych, offering dense odes to the axe. Recent years have been kind to the group: they’ve shared the stage with Jesus & Mary Chain, Brian Jonestown Massacre and Nine Inch Nails, been lauded by Pitchfork, and signed to Mute Records. All the while, Ackermann continues to work at his Death By Audio pedal company, creating custom pedals for bands like Wilco, Lightning Bolt, My Bloody Valentine and U2. Not bad for a young rock’n'roller.

WOXY Presents: Broken Social Scene Live @ the Seaholm Power Plant October 2

This event will be Free! To RSVP, for band updates, and to learn more details, keep checking: Live at Seaholm

seaholm_small_logoWOXY is proud to announce Broken Social Scene, performing live at the Seaholm Power Plant on Cesar Chavez Friday, October 2nd. The show is completely free, and will start at 10 pm on Friday after ACL has closed for the evening and continue until 4 am. 4,000 people will be granted access to the event.

The decommissioned Seaholm Power Plant has been virtually out of reach for all Austinites since its construction in the 1950’s. For years, the Art Deco building has held a great deal of mystery to passersby due to its looming presence and restricted access. But things will change in October as Rare Magazine has been given the keys to the Seaholm and will host the first large scale public event to take place at the power plant on the nights of October 2nd and 3rd. WOXY is proud to present the first night with one of our favorite bands. VIP guests and attending artists will encounter an unrivaled experience, as the industrial mammoth is turned into a lounge and green room, complete with DJ’s, dance floor, and bar.

Broken Social Scene hail from Canada and their 19 person ensemble (including Justin Peroff, Charles Spearin, Andrew Whiteman, Sam Goldberg, Jason Collett, David Newfeld, Leslie Feist, Emily Haines, James Shaw, Evan Cranley, Amy Millan and more) will undoubtedly put on a show to remember at this unique space. Headed by Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning, the group’s atmospheric pop has wooed fans and critics alike since 1999. Their 2002 release You Forgot It In People and 2005’s self-titled work are both benchmarks in the indie music scene.

Details: The Seaholm Power Plant is at 214 West Avenue Austin, TX 78701. This show is produced by Voodoo Cowboy Entertainment and Rare Magazine | Events.
