WOXY’s SXSW Lounge Acts – And Your Chance to Win the Best Seat in the House

woxy-hs-sltEvery year, WOXY hunkers down for SXSW in the studio and records live sessions with a slew of our favorite bands. This year is special, though. It’s our first year as Austin residents, and our first year with a fantastic space that is all ours — and you can bet we’ve thrown our hearts and minds completely into planning this year’s SXSW Lounge Acts.

We’re also offering something completely new and special to our listeners. Together with Home Slice Pizza and Sweet Leaf Tea, we’re giving some listeners the unique opportunity to join us for some of our Lounge Acts. Take a look at the acts we’ve got scheduled (a couple more TBA but don’t let that stop you from submitting your request) and let us know who you’d like to see. If you’re chosen as a winner, you’ll get to come down to our studios on S. Congress Ave, watch your favorite band from our special viewing deck, eat pizza from Home Slice and drink tea from Sweet Leaf and do a meet and greet with the band after their set. Winners will also receive goodie bags from some of our partners filled with loads of awesome swag. You and a guest will have a very special SXSW experience with us and we’re so excited to get things underway! Just fill out the form and hang tight – winners will be notified the week before SXSW, plenty of time for you to think of an excuse to duck out of work and catch some live music with WOXY, Home Slice and Sweet Leaf Tea.

On the schedule are: You You’re Awesome, Via Audio, Twin Tigers, The Mynabirds, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, The Ruby Suns, Frightened Rabbit, Ben Sollee & Daniel Martin Moore, Miles Kurosky (of Beulah), The Besnard Lakes, Bear in Heaven, Avi Buffalo, Surfer Blood, We Were Promised Jetpacks, Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson. 1:00 PM You, You’re Awesome Yusef Quotah and Kevin Bayer actually met each other on the WOXY message boards years ago and became show-going buddies. About a year and a half ago, they finally started making their own music, and the result is the band You, You’re Awesome. Quotah was playing around with some electronic arrangements, and when the pair went to see Holy Fuck and Do Make Say Think in concert, they had the shape of what they wanted to achieve. Their debut, You’re Getting Old, is out now and we look forward to hearing tracks from it performed in our studios during their Lounge Act session.

2:30 PM Via Audio Brooklyn four-piece Via Audio have spent the last two years touring behind their critically acclaimed debut album Say Something. Recently, the indie-pop outfit went back into the studio with help from producer Jim Eno (from Spoon) and are ready to release their follow-up effort. Their new album — Animalore — is due out March 9th and is described by the band as being, “a collection of eccentric sounds infused with fairy tales, folklore, science fiction, romance, seduction, and adventure.” WOXY is anxious to hear Via Audio’s new material and has scheduled them to come in the week of SXSW for a special Lounge Act performance.

10 AM Twin Tigers Athens, Georgia – based Twin Tigers formed when Matthew Rain and Aimee Morris met up while working at a restaurant, with Doug Crump and Forrest Hall rounding out the current lineup. We’ve been big fans for a while here at WOXY, and the FutureSounds guys had them in for a session last year. The band is set to release their debut full-length, Gray Waves, March 2nd. Twin Tigers will also take the stage at 9 p.m. at our SXSW showcase at Emo’s Annex.
Twin Tigers – Sexless Love

12 PM The Mynabirds Named for a rare 1965 Neil Young / Rick James project (really!), The Mynabirds is singer Laura Burhenn, formerly one half of Georgie James, joined by multi-instrumentalist Richard Swift. Their gauzy chamber-pop sound, a combination of indie pop, 60’s girl group influences, and hints of Dusty Springfield, certainly makes them a group to watch. They’ll be swinging by the WOXY studios for a session during SXSW, bringing tunes from their debut LP, What We Lose in the Fire We Gain in the Flood, out in April.

4 PM Megaphonic Thrift

Thursday, March 18

10 AM Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings Funk and soul revivalists Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings have been bringing back the height of soul for years, using the ’60s and ’70s as touchstones for their modern take on traditional music. 100 Days, 100 Nights, released in 2007, sent a shockwave through the indie rock atmosphere, and their upcoming release, I Learned the Hard Way, promises to be just as exciting. Known for electric live shows, the band is sure to light a fire underneath all of us here at WOXY during their Lounge Act.

12 PM The Ruby Suns A Californian transplant to Auckland, New Zealand, Ryan McPhun started the Ruby Suns in 2004. The following years have seen the release of two full length albums, with a third, Fight Softly, out in the U.S. on March 2nd. For this album, McPhun worked mostly solo, crafting an expansive soundscape of sunny electro-pop. Here at WOXY we couldn’t be happier about having the Ruby Suns visit us in our new digs in Austin for a Lounge Act during SXSW!

2 PM TBA

4 PM Frightened Rabbit The Scottish indie-rock sounds of Frightened Rabbit have caused quite a stir in the American indie pop world. 2008’s The Midnight Organ Fight brought the band’s name to the lips of new fans and critics, earning them a stellar reputation at home and abroad. Their latest album, The Winter of Mixed Drinks, promises to be just as thrilling. We can’t wait to hear the new stuff during their Lounge Act.

Friday, March 19

10 AM Ben Sollee & Daniel Martin Moore Ben Sollee and Daniel Martin Moore are two Kentucky songwriters that share a lot in common. In 2008, while Sollee delivered his much praised debut Learning To Bend, Moore also put out his own inaugural release Stray Age. In the midst of releasing their respective acoustic-pop debuts, Solle reached out to Moore after hearing his music on Myspace. Both are now good friends and have come together with producer and “Monster of Folk” Yim Yames to release Dear Companion. While this collaboration centers itself around the exaltation and preservation of their beloved home state, it does so without making any sacrifices. Their new songs are as emotionally affecting as they are easy on the ears and that is why WOXY is proud to present a Lounge Act featuring these two playing selections off their current release.

12 PM Miles Kurosky Indie-pop veteran Miles Kurosky has been through quite a bit since his departure from Beulah in 2004. Following the breakup of this landmark San Francisco act, Kurosky got married, recovered from health complications, and wrote a new batch of ambitious pop gems. With his new solo-record, The Desert of Shallow Effects, on the horizon, fans can expect Kurosky to emerge from his musical hiatus stronger than ever before. WOXY is extremely excited to catch up with Kurosky this SXSW as he will be headed into our studio for another great Lounge Act performance.

2 PM The Besnard Lakes Montreal’s The Besnard Lakes were formed by married duo Jace Lasek and Olga Goreas. The group has expanded since then, and their expansive, dynamic sound reflects that growth. Their second album, The Besnard Lakes Are the Dark Horse, was recorded with guest appearances from Stars, The Dears and Godspeed You! Black Emperor/Silver Mt. Zion. It was nominated for a Polaris music prize in 2007. This year’s release, The Besnard Lakes Are the Roaring Night comes out March 9 on Jagjaguwar.
The Besnard Lakes – Albatross

4 PM Bear in Heaven After various line-up changes, Brooklyn-based Bear In Heaven has currently settled on one that has allowed them to cultivate something that is all their own. Known for marrying billowy soft-rock melodies with anxious electronic rhythms, this four-piece creates a musical landscape likened to that of a David Lynch film. This spectacular collective is now touring behind their critically celebrated second album, Beast Rest Forth Mouth, and WOXY is incredibly excited to bring them to you live Friday March 19 at Emo’s Annex during our official SXSW showcase. Catch Bear In Heaven also in our studio for an upcoming Lounge Act performance!

10 AM Avi Buffalo
Avi Buffalo is a fresh-faced pop band straight out of sunny Long Beach, California. Although the members of this band are barely out of high school, their well crafted tunes are a testament to the band’s profound artistic maturity. With a much talked about single “What’s In It For?” already out on Sub Pop and a highly anticipated LP in the wings, Avi Buffalo seems bound for future success. WOXY will be the first to bring you this promising young group as they stop by the studio to perform on another great episode of Lounge Act!

12 PM We Were Promised Jetpacks Glasgow, Scotland four-piece We Were Promised Jetpacks, formed in 2003. They recently wrapped up a U.S. tour in support of last year’s These Four Walls, and are currently prepping a new EP. Like fellow countrymen (and labelmates) The Twilight Sad and Frightened Rabbit, they have been getting quite a few spins on the WOXY airwaves in the past year. We are quite pleased to have them drop in to our Austin studios for a Lounge Act session during SXSW!

2 PM Surfer Blood
West Palm Beach natives Surfer Blood went from waiters to indie rock superheroes in no time at all. Their rise is thanks to a gripping live show (they’ve got a slot at Primavera alongside Pavement and the Pixies) and the strength of their debut album, Astro Coast. Their sound is reflective of the music they grew up listening to – 90s slacker gods like Pavement, Built to Spill and Yo La Tengo. There’s no doubt their set at our Lounge will be a memorable one!

4 PM Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson (MBAR) is a twenty-five year-old singer-songwriter out of Brooklyn that began his career in a number of short-lived bands. Although this may have stalled MBAR, his powerful brand of wood-carved folk-rock would not be kept a secret for long. With help from admirers in high profile acts such as Grizzly Bear and Kyp Malone (from TV On the Radio), MBAR was able to record and release his self-titled debut on Say Hey Records in 2006. Saddle Creek has just released his highly anticipated second album Summer Of Fear and it is expected to pick up the fans by the truck load. During SXSW, WOXY will have MBAR in the studio for what is surely going to be an amazing Lounge Act!
