Every now and then, I put on a new album and it takes me back. It takes me back to a different era of music, a sound that is familiar yet fresh at the same time. I get a taste of that when spinning the new album from Megafaun, the North Carolina trio who just released their second album Gather, Form & Fly.

Although Gather, Form & Fly is the second album from Megafaun, it is a bit of a coming out party for the guys, whose credits now include tours with fellow North Carolinians The Rosebuds and their long relationship with the mega-indie success story that is Bon Iver. The album is folk harmony at it’s best, imagine if Fleet Foxes were from the South and took more notes from America than from Jim James.

Gather, Form & Fly is not all back porch sing-alongs though, and when these guys get riled up, they can rip into a tune and make it more of an Akron/Family type of jam that hits like a bucking bronco.

The new record is out now on the always respected Home Tapes label.
