SXSW 2009 Session Recap – Post War Years
This unlikely, impromptu outburst, possibly extolling the virtue of the leafy green vegetable, came from Simon of Post War Years mid-song during their session on our final day of broadcasting from EAR Studios at SXSW 2009. It points to the loose, playful vibe the band brought to their US radio debut on WOXY.com
The London-based quartet, originally from Leamington Spa in the Midlands, first hit our radar last year with the release of their debut single “Black Morning”, which contained the brilliant b-side “You And Me Both”. SXSW was the highlight of the band’s first Stateside performances and unlike several bands earlier in the week, where our session kicked off their Festival activities, Post War Years were concluding things with us and seemed to be more than a little eager to get the party started. This made for an energetic session and lively interview that featured four songs off their upcoming full-length debut The Greats And The Happenings along with “Black Morning”.
Unconventional in that there’s no one lead vocalist, Simon, Henry and Tom all share lead vocals with each of the multi-instrumentalists switching from guitar to bass to keys from song to song if not within the song itself. The band’s prog-pop will have listeners recalling Friendly Fires and even Talking Heads, two bands who could comfortably lay down a groove while forging their own unique sound.
