Lounge Act Recap – The Turnbull AC’s

Dan Mecher started The Turnbull AC’s as a solo project back in 2005. It quickly turned into a full band that also included Cari Clara’s Eric Diedrichs. When they released their self-titled debut in 2006 it not only caught our ears here at WOXY, but earned them several Cincinnati Entertainment Award nominations, including Artist Of The Year.

Two years later, there have been some shifts leading up to their second release Small Town Parade. The lineup now includes Brad Stenz from Moth and former Death In Graceland drummer Brian Penick.

In this session we get treated to all new music from Small Town Parade and Shiv talks to the guys about transition and how the new songs all came together.

Lounge Act Recap – Jessica Lea Mayfield

Jessica Lea Mayfield is set to join the short list of smoky, alt-country crooners you recall on a first-name basis, like Lucinda, Jolie, and Gillian. Listen closely and you’ll even hear Mazzy Star’s Hope Sandoval in her voice, despite the fact that she herself doesn’t think so. The 19 year-old Kent, Ohio native is a little bit country and a little bit indie, so don’t be surprised to learn that she sports Doc Martens with a dress.

Her debut With Blasphemy So Heartfelt was produced by The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach and she and her crack sidemen stopped into the Lounge prior to a local engagement, during which she talked with Mike about her parents’ wishes for her career choice, recording her own material after playing in her family’s band since age 8, and preparing for her first trip of any kind overseas.

Track Listing:
We’ve Never Lied
Kiss Me Again

Listen To Cale Parks’ Guest DJ Set

The day before releasing his 2nd solo album Sparklace on the Polyvinyl label, Cale Parks (multi-instrumentalist from Aloha and live drummer for White Williams) stopped in to the WOXY studios for an hour to chat with me and pick some tunes. He was out on a tour with Anathallo and it was fitting that he was playing in the tri-state during the week of his album’s release considering he spent a good chunk of his life here in Cincinnati. Cale now calls Brooklyn home, but I’m not sure he gets to spend a lot of time there considering how often he ends out on the road.

During this interview, he talks about the creation of Sparklace, some of his favorite bands and artists, and even gives us some info on the next Aloha album (which we will probably see in the Spring of 2009). In addition to this full stream of Cale’s guest DJ session, you can stream (and then buy!) his new album from our friends at lala.com.

Here are the songs Cale chose during his hour with us……

Icy Demons “Miami Ice”
Squeeze “Up The Junction”
Blur “Music Is My Radar”
Arthur Russell “Habit Of You”
Peter Gabriel “Games Without Frontiers”
The Millennium “The Island”
Kate Bush “Cloudbusting”
Broadcast “Pendulum”
Harmonia “Notre Dame”
The Knife “Forest Families”
Cale Parks “Every Week Ends”

Cale’s upcoming tour dates are listed after the jump…
