On this edition of Xtrabeats, Shiv features two great hour-long DJ sets. First up, he digs into our archives to feature a mix from DJ Touche of The Wiseguys. This one is a set recorded back in 1999 when songs from “The Antidote” were all over. His mix intersects some classic hip-hop tracks with some great big beat hits (including, of course, big hits from the The Wiseguys like “Ooh La La” and “Start The Commotion”). These days Touche (aka Theo Keating) is one half of The Black Ghosts, with former Simian member Simon Lord.
In hour two, Shiv serves up a tasty mix from the Berlin-based electronic duo M.A.N.D.Y. They’ve been friends since they were 15 years old and co-founded the Get Physical label back in 2002. They’ve recently mixed the 38th installment in the Fabric series and we’ve got an hour long dj set to celebrate.
On their third Lounge Act session, we asked Ra Ra Riot to stop by and play an extended live show. We also invited some listeners in to watch and the band obliged with an eight song set where we were treated with a few new tunes.
In the interview, it was revealed that they finished recording in December and now the final mixes are in the process of being finished. This energetic recording should tide fans over until their full-length debut record is released later this year.
I’m pretty certain we still have alot of Nirvana and Kurt Cobain fans out there that would love to get their hands on this one. We have some copies of About A Son, the new documentary, to give away here on The Futurist. But first, a bit about the film, and since I have yet to see it myself, I found this description helpful……
Following in the deeply idiosyncratic footsteps of Last Days, About a Son plays more like autobiography than documentary. Gus Van Sant’s feature extrapolates moments from the life of Kurt Cobain (with Michael Pitt as a musician named Blake), while A.J. Schnack’s non-fiction film adheres closer to the facts, but advances a more radical Koyaanisqatsi-like approach. First off, Cobain supplies the narration, but the filmmaker avoids pictures of the alternative icon until the end. (He culled the voice-over from interviews conducted by author Michael Azerrad for Come as You Are: The Story of Nirvana.) Beyond-the-grave narration isn’t a new concept–see Tupac: Resurrection–but Schnack (Gigantic: A Tale of Two Johns) ups the ante by excluding talking heads, concert footage, and other staples of the genre. Instead, he uses still and time-lapse photography to explore Cobain’s Northwest, i.e. Aberdeen, Olympia, and Seattle. The artist’s unguarded reflections create a sense of intimacy as specific locations illustrate his words. Conversely, the lack of portraiture and self-penned music generates a feeling of absence. The soundtrack combines an ambient score from producer Steve Fisk and Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard with Cobain favorites, like David Bowie, Cheap Trick, and the Vaselines (available on a separate CD). For more specifics, interested parties can always turn to tomes by Azerrad, Gina Arnold, Charles R. Cross, and Everett True. About a Son doesn’t presume to provide a definitive portrait, but Schnack’s rigorous avoidance of convention results in an experience far more dream-like than depressing. –Kathleen C. Fennessy
In addition, here is the trailer for the film.
To win a copy of this DVD, give a short description of your feelings when you heard of Cobain’s death. I know many of us remember it well.

One of my favorite surprises of the year has been the debut record from The Heavy Circles. Their self-titled album popped up in our mailbox a few weeks ago and I didn’t pay it much attention until I looked a little closer at the album’s credits. You see, this is a new collaboration between Edie Brickell and her stepson Harper Simon (yep, that would be Paul’s oldest son). I still have an old 45 for “What I Am”, but it had been a very long time since I had heard any music from her.
I was skeptical at first that this could be something we’d play at WOXY but then I flipped through the cd’s booklet and did a double take. The musicians involved run the gamut from Martha Wainwright, Money Mark, and violinist Joan Wasser to former Cibo Matto members Yuka Honda, Miho Hatori, and Sean Lennon. When I finally sat down to listen to the cd, I was impressed with how eclectic and interesting it was. Edie’s voice sounds terrific and effortlessly shifts between the more downtempo tracks and the more rockin’ numbers (like “Better” and “Dynamite Child” which we’ve been playing here at the station).
There was another great song called “Super Powers” that was apparently recorded during the sessions for the cd, but didn’t make the cut. The band were kind enough to share it with us so that we could share it with you. If you like what you hear, there’s plenty more to enjoy on their debut disc, available now from their own Dynamite Child label.
So enjoy this new Heavy Circles song, which you won’t find anywhere else.
