Bad Veins & Soft City Lights

badveins1.jpg
One of our favorite bands here in the Cincinnati area, Bad Veins have really been in the news alot lately. From their inclusion with the new RCRD LBL to a 7″ on Dovecote Records and a great feature on The Tripwire, this duo are beginning to get some great and well deserved exposure. And now, a local videographer has put together an excellent piece on Bad Veins, which will be the first of many on his brand new site, Soft City Lights.

Enjoy this video which features music by Bad Veins, and oh yeah, “Falling Tide” and “Afraid”, two of the songs featured in the video, uses the audio from this Bad Veins Lounge Act.

Kevin Bayer is the energy and enthusiasm behind Soft City Lights, and you can find our more about him at his new website.

Lounge Act Recap – The Lions Rampant

lions1.jpg
This Cincinnati/ Northern Kentucky-based band joined us in the lounge after a great 2007. The year saw them release two EP’s and garner two Cincinnati Entertainment Award nominations. Their lounge session warm-up got us only our second noise complaint in the building, which gives you a great idea of what to expect from this homegrown 4-piece.

For their debut performance in the lounge, they play four songs from their current EP, The Lions Rampant Play Rock N Roll, two of which have already been featured on previous episodes of Local Lixx.

Lounge Act Recap – Ravens & Chimes

ravens1.jpg
This Brooklyn-based band dropped into the Lounge while on the road touring behind the release of their debut album “Reichenbach Falls.”

Originally formed when the band members were students at NYU, they took a strong group of tracks written over a span of four years and entered the studio with Howard Bilerman (who also recorded a debut disc you may have heard of: the Arcade Fire’s “Funeral”) to make their first record.

Look for more extensive touring plans from the band into 2008.

Esopus Magazine Needs Your Help

Here is a great opportunity to contribute to a great magazine, Esopus. Esopus is a esopus.jpgtwice-yearly arts magazine featuring fresh, unmediated perspectives on contemporary culture from a wide range of creative professionals. It includes artists’ projects, critical writing, fiction, poetry, visual essays, interviews, and, in each issue, a themed CD of new music. Here is a recent email we received about the magazine that deserves your attention….

Dear Reader:

As you may already know, Esopus exists only because we have been able to rely on the generous support of organizations and individuals to fill the gap between our earned income and operating expenses. That means we need your help in order to preserve all of the things that make every issue of Esopus unique—the refusal to include any advertising or commercially driven content, the high-quality printing, the hand-assembled artists’ multiples, the CD of brand-new music—and to continue to offer the magazine at a heavily subsidized cover price (substantially less than it costs to produce).

I’d be grateful if you’d consider making a donation to the Esopus Foundation this year. For the first time ever, we’re offering “thank-you” gifts for every contribution of $100 and above. These include a limited-edition book corresponding to the printing of Esopus 2 and three superb artists’ multiples. And, for one time only, we are reaching into our archive to offer copies of every one of our first six sold-out issues. As always, your contribution is fully tax-deductible. And regardless of the amount you are able to give, it will entitle you to attend special events held exclusively for donors, like the private reception and viewing of the James Lee Byars exhibition we organized at the Museum of Modern Art earlier this fall.

To make a contribution, you can either visit our website’s “Donate” page.

Esopus is one of the last refuges for a truly commercial-free experience, from the front cover to its very last page. Just reflect for a moment on what that means in our hyper-mediated world: Where else—be it on your Internet homepage, in the pages of your favorite newspaper or magazine, or at your local movie theater—are you able to access content that hasn’t been mitigated by some form of advertising?

Please think about supporting our mission—we quite literally can’t keep Esopus afloat without you.

Thanks for your consideration—and happy holidays!

WOXY.com Recommends Holiday Gift Ideas Part 3 (Books)

elliott.jpgElliott Smith - Autumn de Wilde, who directed the video for Smith’s “Son Of Sam” and created the packaging for his album Figure 8 writes what is not the first, and probably won’t be the last book about the tortured singer/songwriter. And it is not a traditional book but all accounts, in that it is loads of photography and interviews with people Smith knew well. This one is certainly worth checking out for all Elliott Smith fans.

replacements.jpgThe Replacements: All Over But the Shouting: An Oral History This book pays tribute to a great rock band that has always been a WOXY favorite. Author Jim Walsh is a longtime Replacements conspirator (his band, Laughing Stock played with them in their early `80s days and he delivered a eulogy at guitarist Bob Stinson’s funeral in 1995), and he nakedly approaches his subjects with the thesis that they were the greatest band of their generation. Still, he makes no apologies for the often cruddy way they treated their fans, their friends, and each other.

33third.jpg33 1/3 Best Of Volumes 1 & 2 - If you are not familiar with the 33 1/3 books it is a series of books written about important and/or seminal music albums. Written by one author per album, the series covers in depth some of the greatest albums of all time. The “Best Of” volumes kind of act like a compilation album to the books, with excerpts from the first 20 being covered in the Best Of Volume 1, and the next 20 in Volume 2. To see a full listing of the books 33 1/3 has covered already, go here.

creem.jpg CREEM: America’s Only Rock ‘N’ Roll Magazine - CREEM magazine stood at the forefront of youth counterculture from 1969 to 1988 as “America’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll Magazine.” This book gives fans of the magazine a nice collection of its back issues, and includes some of the best of the magazine’s vast archives of photos, illustrations, and articles. Looks like a perfect gift for the punk nostalgic or a gift for yourself this holiday season.

u2byu2.jpgU2 by U2 - This one was released earlier this year and I still have not read it! I’m sure I will get around to it and it looks like you should as well. The story is “written” by the band, with quotes culled from over 150 hours of interviews done for Neil McCormick. Every phase of the band’s career, from it’s earliest days straight through to How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb is told solely through quotes from each band member. This makes it more than just another U2 book and worth picking up for yourself or that U2 nerd you love (cough, me, cough) :)

radiohead1.jpg Dead Children Playing: A Picture Book (Radiohead) - For the super duper Radiohead nerd, this book compiles tons of the bands album artwork over the years. It has almost all the paintings Stanley Donwood and Dr Tchock have produced in the last decade, plus this book also contains a loads of never-before-seen artwork. The band have always had odd but intriguing artwork, this would be a super cool coffee table book, as would this next item.

rollingstone.jpgRolling Stone 1,000 Covers: A History of the Most Influential Magazine in Pop Culture - If you want to have one of the coolest coffee table books around, I think this one would place you into that class. It is what it says, 1,000 covers of Rolling Stone magazine, all packed together into this book. It spans from the beginning of the magazine in 1967 all the way till May 2006.

Got some other great book suggestions? Leave em in the comments….

Brit Box Giveaway Winners!

We had a great response to our contest over the course of the last week for a great prize, The Brit Box. Over 50 people tossed britbox.jpgtheir name into the hat for the prize, but we have just one Brit Box to give away. Here is the comment from our winner Greg…..

The Stone Roses 1st album stands the test of time as one of the greatest start-to-finish albums ever. And, their second album ranks #1 as the worst follow-up record in relation to a great 1st album. For that feat alone they should go down into the annuls of rock history. The Cocteau Twins make me cry and I can’t even understand half of what they say–so it must be damn good! All the rest of them have a unique place in my heart as well, but I don’t have room to discuss them all. I summarize as follows: “If it’s not British, it’s crap!”.

Congrats Greg! But that is not all, five others will be receiving an email today letting you know you are the winners of the runner up prize, which is a 18 song compilation of some of the music from the Brit Box, which is a pretty nice little gift in itself……

Thanks for entering and get ready for yet another giveaway here very very soon!
