The Brit Box Giveaway!

britbox1.jpg
Yet another great giveaway today here on The Futurist. This time it is for The Brit Box, an amazing compilation of British music that spans from 1984 to the present and features pretty much all of the British artists you might care about in that time period on the four discs.

Here are some highlights of the box set….

Disc 1, the first of THE BRIT BOX’s four chronologically ordered CDs, roughly spans 1984-1990. Seminal U.K. artists including The Smiths, Jesus & Mary Chain and The Stone Roses take timeless guitar-pop and freshly reinvent it, while groups including Happy Mondays and Primal Scream borrow gleefully from hip-hop to give birth to acid house.

Disc 2, spanning ‘90 to ‘93, explores bands that came to be known in the British press as “shoegazers,” acts that spent more time looking at their feet than making eye contact with their audiences. Featuring tracks by Ride, My Bloody Valentine, The Telescopes and others, the music courses through a sonic space comprised of introspective soundscapes, hazy guitars and dense production.

Disc 3
, focusing heavily on ‘94-’95, opens with Suede’s “Metal Mickey.” Throughout, the song sequence heralds the arrival of Brit-pop, and hugely popular bands including Oasis, Blur, Pulp, and Elastica.

Disc 4, THE BRIT BOX’s final CD, shows that even latecomers to the party like Ash, Super Furry Animals, Mansun, The Verve, and Placebo had some smashing songs in them.

To qualify for the box set, leave a comment with your favorite British band from the last 25 years or so and why. One lucky winner will get the Brit Box Set with the winner being announced next week. We will also choose 5 runner up winners that will receive a single cd that has 18 selections from the box set on it… Good Luck!

Check out some videos of some great Brit Box bands after the jump……

Lounge Act Recap – The Celebrity Pilots

celebrity1.jpg
On the band’s first two albums, Chris Sheehan recorded the bulk of the instrumentation himself with help from GBV’s Todd Tobias.

Chris has since solidified a full band lineup (which includes former Tiara member Jess Faller) and they’ve already started work on a 3rd full-length release that is more of a collaborative effort.

In this performance you’ll hear four tracks from the Spooky Action cd, which is available now through cd baby and digitally on iTunes!

WOXY.com Holiday Mixer Is Up And Running!

woxyholiday_logo.gif
The WOXY Holiday Mixer is up and running now through Christmas. This unique 24/7 collection of seasonal tunes is filled with vintage renditions of your holiday favorites by modern rockers from around the globe. We have a little bit of something for everyone with new music this year from the likes of Sufjan Stevens, Aimee Mann, Over The Rhine, and The Teenage Prayers. If you stick around long enough, you’ll probably hear some irreverent selections from “A John Waters Christmas” and Spinal Tap but we’ve balanced them out with some classic tracks from Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and James Brown among others. To round things out a little more, we’ve also included some tunes about winter, snow falling, and the month of December because we know you can only hear “Jingle Bells” so many times…

A lot of the tracks we selected are out-of-print or hard to find and we had a lot of fun rounding them all up for you. There have been quite a few new additions to the mixer since last Christmas. We hope you enjoy the WOXY Holiday Mixer, and all of us at WOXY.com wish you a safe and happy holiday season!

WOXY.com Recommends Holiday Gift Ideas Part 1

It is that time of the year again, time to decide what to get for your loved ones for Christmas and begin to cross some names off of that list. Of course, we here at WOXY.com think you should just get them all good music, that is what we do after all. There are not alot of new releases floating around right now, but here are some newly packaged re-issues and best of’s that you may not be aware of that could be great gifts for someone on your list, or yourself.

u2.jpgU2 – Joshua Tree (Remastered / Expanded) (Super Deluxe Edition) (2CD/DVD) – A must have for any U2 nerd, this classic album gets a much needed freshening up and includes some great stuff on the DVD as well. The super nerd version also includes a 56 page hardback embossed book.

hitch.jpg

Robyn Hitchcock – I Wanna Go Backwards – Another must have here but this for the Robyn Hitchcock fan base. This box set includes 5 CDs which includes the 3 expanded reissues, plus While Thatcher Mauled Britain: a 2-CD collection of 57 bonus tracks. Or you can go with the 8 LP set! A great collection of Hitchcock’s solo works and like I said, a must have for any completest out there.

Robyn Hitchcock – I Wanna Go Backwards

massive.jpg Massive Attack – Collected Holiday Gift Pack – You may already know about the Collected Best Of thing Massive Attack released last year, but this new version expands things even more. You get two CD’s and a DVD that incorporates the special edition of the trip hop pioneers’ collected hits combined with the companion DVD ‘Eleven Promos’ that compiles their promotional videos.

Certainly worth checking out.

britbox.jpg

The Brit Box: U.K. Indie, Shoegaze, and Brit-Pop Gems of the Last Millennium – This is a very cool item indeed. It’s a 4 CD set with an average of 20 songs on each disc and compiles the less-commercial but no-less important music of the early 1960s British Invasion all the way to the 1990’s Brit bands like Oasis, Ash and The Verve. Some sweet packaging too.

amywinehouse.jpgAmy Winehouse – Back To Black Deluxe Edition Miss out on the Winehouse hype machine this year? It might be a good time to jump on the train now as her album Back To Black is getting the deluxe edition treatment. Although I think only on import right now, this two CD set has loads of bonus tunes to go along with the already excellent album.

Lots more goodies, but these should get you started…..

3rd Annual Toys For Tots Benefit Show

toys.jpg
As the Christmas holiday season kicks off, there are many great ways to help support those that are less fortunate during this season. One of the best is through the Toys For Tots organization. This marks the 60th year that the US Marines have teamed up with Toys For Tots. Last year, Toys for Tots delivered more than 19.2 million toys to over 7.6 million children.

And this year also marks the 3rd year that the Marines and some local Cincinnati bands are teaming up for the Toys For Tots Benefit Show. The show is Friday December 7th at the Madison Theater in Covington. Local bands Zero 1 Zero , Queen Drag , Chakras, The Screaming Kings, Under Destruction, and Pulse 8 are scheduled to perform.

Doors are at 8pm, and the cost is $7.00 at the door or one new toy. So get out and enjoy some music for a great cause next Friday!
