The Big Ears Festival in Knoxville is getting closer and closer. The event takes place March 26-28 and if you have not already thrown your hat into the ring for our contest, you should do that now. We are pretty excited about the festival and wanted to give you a proper preview of some of the artists playing this year. So, in case you missed it, you can now stream our hour long special on demand! The show features music from the likes of Joanna Newsom, St. Vincent, The National, Clogs, Dirty Projectors and more, all of whom are playing Big Ears this year.
The Trala-Lala Radio Hour is our newest show, hosted by Ben, Jeff and Jocie of The Low Anthem. We’ll let Ben give you the background:
Long before Low Anthem, Jeff and I used to DJ the graveyard shift on WBRU (Providence, RI). So, starting on January 31, we’re going to be doing a weekly program on WOXY. It’ll be fun to revisit. We’re calling it Trala-Lala Radio Hour and here’s the idea: we’re going to tape our shows from the tour van or wherever we may be traveling. Every week will feature a different theme based on God knows what and we’ll have “in studio” performances from guest artists if we can find any musicians who are cool enough to record live in a Ford Econoline…

Every year, WOXY hunkers down for SXSW in the studio and records live sessions with a slew of our favorite bands. This year is special, though. It’s our first year as Austin residents, and our first year with a fantastic space that is all ours — and you can bet we’ve thrown our hearts and minds completely into planning this year’s SXSW Lounge Acts.
We’re also offering something completely new and special to our listeners. Together with Home Slice Pizza and Sweet Leaf Tea, we’re giving some listeners the unique opportunity to join us for some of our Lounge Acts. Take a look at the acts we’ve got scheduled (a couple more TBA but don’t let that stop you from submitting your request) and let us know who you’d like to see. If you’re chosen as a winner, you’ll get to come down to our studios on S. Congress Ave, watch your favorite band from our special viewing deck, eat pizza from Home Slice and drink tea from Sweet Leaf and do a meet and greet with the band after their set. Winners will also receive goodie bags from some of our partners filled with loads of awesome swag. You and a guest will have a very special SXSW experience with us and we’re so excited to get things underway! Just fill out the form and hang tight – winners will be notified the week before SXSW, plenty of time for you to think of an excuse to duck out of work and catch some live music with WOXY, Home Slice and Sweet Leaf Tea.
On the schedule are: You You’re Awesome, Via Audio, Twin Tigers, The Mynabirds, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, The Ruby Suns, Frightened Rabbit, Ben Sollee & Daniel Martin Moore, Miles Kurosky (of Beulah), The Besnard Lakes, Bear in Heaven, Avi Buffalo, Surfer Blood, We Were Promised Jetpacks, Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson. Follow the jump to get more details on all the bands, find out the set times, and more!
We kicked off our local residency series at Stubb’s back in November with Neon Indian, and now we’re back at the same venue for another installment of the WOXY Local Residency series.
This time, we’re excited to welcome one of our favorite local bands, the Golden Boys, Crooks and A Giant Dog. The latest and fourth Golden Boys record, Thee Electric Wolfman is a “shambolic collection of party rockers and soulful wailers.” They’re a lot of fun — especially live — and we can’t wait to ramble through some punk rock with them on March 11. Crooks will be on the road in early March before returning home to rock with us at Stubb’s.
When it became clear to John Davis in early 2008 that Georgie James was probably not going to last, he immersed himself in writing new material. He wasn’t sure if it would become a solo album or if things would possibly turn around and become a second Georgie James release.
By Summer 2008, the band officially called it quits and John had an entire album’s worth of material ready to go. He recorded solo, but eventually assembled a backing band that has become Title Tracks.
While on tour with Boston’s Pretty & Nice, John and the guys stopped in to play a set that includes some tunes from the debut album It Was Easy and even includes an unreleased track called “It’s Wrong.”
The Waiting Room is a 2 hour new music & non-sequitor chat show based out of Cardiff, Wales, UK. Co-hosted by the verbal miscreants one half of Drunk Country & The Woman of The House + the occasional guest, TWR delivers new bands, interviews & opinion at an alarming rate. All with an accent. Expect, then, music, blather, chaos & cheek.

YellowFever is comprised of Austin natives Jennifer Moore & Adam Jones. They’ve been fixtures on the local scene for the last few years, sometimes with a third member but currently content as a duo. Jennifer’s voice recalls Stereolab’s Laetitia Sadier and their brand of art pop has been singularly unique among Austin bands. They’ve been fairly DIY, with only an EP and a few hard-to-find single releases to this point. Fortunately, the Vivian Girls made a self-titled compilation of all of the band’s recordings the first release on their new Wild World imprint in late 2009.
For our Lounge Act though, they chose to feature all new, yet to be released material. It’s possible that some or all of the songs will be included on a new record, their proper full-length debut, that the two hope to release sometime in 2010.
Tune in each week as Larry and John of Future Sounds bring you 2 hours of the top independent and unsigned bands.

I must admit that I didn’t quite know what to expect upon receiving an invitation to attend the Next Big Nashville festival in October. Oh sure, I knew that ‘Music City USA’ was a lot more than the capitol of country music. While the Opry & Music Row may be front-and-center to the general public, most insiders know that the city has become a hotbed for all sorts of independent artists covering a wide range of musical styles. We regularly saw a steady stream of indie bands travelling north for gigs in Cincinnati and to play a Lounge Act session for us in the WOXY studios, so with that in mind, I checked the lineup and made my reservation.
Once I’d arrived in Tennessee, I met up with Future Sounds’ Larry Little, as both WOXY & Future Sounds teamed to present a string of showcases featuring the likes of Phosphorescent, The Black Angels, Bear In Heaven, Twin Tigers, and Jemina Pearl, formerly of local favorites Be Your Own Pet. We also partnered with American Songwriter magazine and Gibson guitars to record a string of stripped down performances either on the Gibson tour bus or at the magazine’s offices.
