What's in a name anyway? Grey Lantern (supposed to sound like Pink Floyd, but missed the mark); A Man Called Sun (another band named "A Man Called Adam"); Manson (lawsuit threatened by Charles Manson's estate). How about Mansun?
Mansun formed in 1995. The band is Brit as Brit can be… they hail from all reaches of the United Kingdom. Paul Edward Draper, Dominic Chad and Stove King have the intensity of hard rock and the stylish swagger of glam in a pop crust.
In 1995, Mansun recorded the single 'Take It Easy Chicken,' on a four track. They refused to give it to anyone. A passing A&R guy overheard the song while walking down the hall to visit a different band. He freaked out and demanded the tape. When it arrived in London, a huge label scramble broke out. Mansun turned down all the offers and instead printed up a thousand copies on vinyl. The band sent copies to shops in London. It made an immediate impact on the Radio 1 playlist.
Mansun ended up joining the forces of Parlophone Records. Their debut, Attack of the Grey Lantern, came out in 1997 and ran to the top of the British charts. Mansun was voted one of the best new bands of that year.
All this love from over the pond, and a minimal amount in the United States. Shame.
